Red Sox Want Johan Oviedo to be More Explosive

The Boston Red Sox want right-hander Johan Oviedo's delivery "to be more explosive," according to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. The team wants him to "create more force down the mound." "The extension," manager Alex Cora said. "And that's kind of key for him. We saw him last year, he did a good job against us, and that's his uniqueness. If the velo goes up, great. But I think just maximize who you are and his extension is elite." If the 6-foot-6, 275-pounder can make the necessary fixes to his delivery that the team is looking for, he could be the favorite for one of the final spots in the starting rotation to begin the 2026 season, with Kutter Crawford (knee, wrist) potentially opening the year on the injured list. Oviedo looked good last year in his return from Tommy John surgery, although he made only nine starts (40 1/3 frames). Durability and walks are the biggest concerns with Oviedo, but if he can generate more force with his delivery, he could see an uptick in velocity and K's in Boston.

Johan Oviedo to Bounce Back in 2026?

Boston Red Sox right-hander Johan Oviedo's career 4.24 ERA, 4.61 FIP, and 15-26 record don't jump off the page, but an improvement in his fastball last year intrigued the Red Sox enough to trade for him this offseason, according to Mike Petriello of MLB.com. Oviedo returned from Tommy John surgery that cost him all of 2024 to record a 3.57 ERA and 1.21 WHIP with 42 strikeouts and 23 walks in 40 1/3 innings over nine starts with the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2025. His fastball had a minus-12 run value, a bottom-20 mark, in 2023. Despite a hard fastball, Oviedo had among the worst vertical movement on the pitch. When Oviedo returned in August of last year, he added five inches of rise to his fastball and increased his whiff rate on the pitch from 19% in 2023 to 31%. The 27-year-old's 14% walk rate was still ugly, but if he can stay healthy, he could be a nice sleeper in deeper leagues in Boston's starting rotation.

Red Sox Add More Starting Pitching With Trade for Johan Oviedo

The Boston Red Sox are acquiring right-hander Johan Oviedo, left-hander Tyler Samaniego, and catcher Adonys Guzman from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday night in exchange for outfield prospect Jhostynxon Garcia, sources tell Jeff Passan of ESPN. Boston is serious about adding starting pitching this offseason, having already traded for veteran right-hander Sonny Gray, and now they'll bring the 27-year-old Oviedo in for rotation depth. The Cuban hurler missed all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery. He missed most of 2025 while recovering but managed to make nine starts for the Bucs, going 2-1 with a 3.57 ERA (4.92 FIP), 1.21 WHIP, and 42:23 K:BB ratio in 40 1/3 frames. Oviedo has limited fantasy upside given his career 20.2% strikeout rate and bloated 11% walk rate. He should be in play as a backend rotation option for the BoSox in 2026.

Johan Oviedo Will Start on Wednesday

Pittsburgh Pirates starting pitcher Johan Oviedo will be recalled to take the mound against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday, according to interim manager Don Kelly. Oviedo has only pitched one inning for the Pirates this season. He tossed one inning, allowing two earned runs on three hits in an outing against the San Francisco Giants in early August. He figures to get a fair chance to earn a spot in the rotation down the stretch. Oviedo was a decent option for the Pirates during the 2023 campaign. The 27-year-old isn't an ideal streaming option against a tough Blue Jays lineup.

Johan Oviedo Activated for Season Debut on Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (lat) was activated from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut in Monday's series opener against the visiting San Francisco Giants at PNC Park. While the matchup is a nice one against the offensively-challenged Giants, fantasy managers will want to think twice before using Oviedo as a streamer after he missed all of 2024 due to Tommy John surgery and the first four months of this year with a right-lat strain. The 26-year-old will also likely be on a pitch count on Monday after he threw 62 pitches in his final minor-league rehab start. The Cuban hurler has a career 4.32 ERA and 1.39 WHIP with a below-average 19.6% strikeout rate and an elevated 10.8% walk rate as well. Oviedo showed some promising signs in 2023 but he was also plenty inconsistent, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect much to close out 2025.

Johan Oviedo Expected to Make Season Debut Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow, lat) will make his 2025 debut on Monday with a start against the San Francisco Giants, Colin Beazley and Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette report. Oviedo, currently on the 60-day injured list, hasn't pitched for the Pirates since Sept. 27, 2003. He missed the entire 2024 campaign as a result of Tommy John surgery and has been on the shelf all of this season with a lat injury. After making six rehab starts, including one at the Triple-A level, the 27-year-old is ready to rejoin the Pirates' rotation. Oviedo will take over for left-hander Bailey Falter after he went to the Kansas City Royals at the July 31 trade deadline. In 2023, his most recent season in the bigs, Oviedo went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA, a 1.37 WHIP, and 158:83 K:BB over a career-high 32 starts and 177 2/3 innings.

Johan Oviedo Tosses Five Innings in Double-A Rehab Start

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow, lat) was terrific in a rehab outing with Double-A Altoona on Thursday. Oviedo threw five innings and allowed just one earned run with no walks over 63 pitches in his second rehab start at that level. The 27-year-old fanned five, threw 42 pitches for strikes, and reached 97 mph on his fastball. Oviedo could move to Triple-A next as he works back from multiple arm injuries that have kept him out of action since 2023. After missing last season while recovering from Tommy John surgery, Oviedo has been on the shelf this year with a lat issue. He went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA and 158:83 K:BB across 32 starts and 177 2/3 innings with the Pirates in 2023.

Johan Oviedo Throws Bullpen Session on Monday

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow, late) was scheduled to throw a bullpen session at PNC Park on Monday and meet with team doctors and coaches, according to interim manager Don Kelly. Oviedo made his fourth minor-league rehab start with Double-A Altoona last Friday and allowed an earned run on three hits while walking none and striking out three in 3 1/3 innings. The 27-year-old was able to get up to 53 pitches in his latest outing, which means he probably will need several more rehab starts before the Pirates feel comfortable letting him make his 2025 big-league debut at some point in August. Oviedo could move his rehab assignment to Triple-A Indianapolis for his next turn. The Cuban hurler hasn't pitched in the big leagues since 2023, when he went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA and 1.37 WHIP with 158 K's and 83 walks in 32 starts.

Johan Oviedo to Begin Single-A Rehab Assignment This Weekend

Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Johan Oviedo (elbow/lat) will start a rehab assignment with Single-A Bradenton this weekend, according to the team. Oviedo has built up to 50 to 55 pitches during side sessions in his recovery from multiple arm injuries. He missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery before landing on the 60-day injured list this past spring with lat problems. Oviedo hasn't pitched in the majors since September 2023, but the 27-year-old is on track to return sometime in the second half of the season. He amassed 177 2/3 innings in 2023 and went 9-14 with a 4.31 ERA, 158:83 K:BB, and a 1.37 WHIP.

Johan Oviedo Touches 97 MPH in Latest Live BP Session

Per Sports Illustrated's Dominic Campbell, Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Johan Oviedo (elbow) continues to soundly progress in his recovery from Tommy John surgery, recently touching 97 MPH in a live batting practice session. The 27-year-old hasn't pitched since undergoing the procedure in December of 2023. Oviedo still aims to rejoin the big-league squad after the All-Star break, as he'll need an extended minor-league rehab assignment to build back up his strength. The Cuban native flashed his upside back in 2022, boasting a 3.21 ERA and 1.05 WHIP through 21 appearances (eight starts). However, he declined over a larger sample (32 starts) before his injury (4.31 ERA, 1.37 WHIP).
