Red Sox Place Ranger Suarez on Injured List With Groin Strain

The Boston Red Sox announced on Thursday that they placed left-hander Ranger Suarez (groin) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to July 6) with a strained left groin and recalled infielder Brett Harris from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Suarez will now miss his final scheduled start of the first half of the season this weekend against the New York Mets after he was pulled from his last start on Sunday early against the Los Angeles Angels due to tightness in his left groin. He'll now be sidelined through the All-Star break, and it remains to be seen if he'll be ready to rejoin the rotation for the start of the second half next Friday. The 30-year-old Venezuelan hurler has pitched well enough in his first season in Boston to be held in all fantasy leagues while he recovers from his groin strain. Suarez has gone 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA (2.63 FIP) and 1.16 WHIP with 97 strikeouts and 26 walks in 91 1/3 innings pitched across his 17 starts. He continues to display strong control on the mound and has also posted a career-best 25.8% strikeout rate.

Red Sox Hopeful That Ranger Suarez Can Avoid the Injured List

The Boston Red Sox are hopeful that left-hander Ranger Suarez (groin) can avoid landing on the injured list, and they'll see how he's feeling on Tuesday, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Tightness in his left groin caused Suarez to be pulled in the third inning of his start on Sunday in the series finale against the Los Angeles Angels, which puts his next scheduled start in the air for this Saturday against the New York Mets. With the All-Star break coming next week, fantasy managers shouldn't be surprised if Boston plays it safe and skips Suarez's turn in the rotation to close out the first half of the season. The 30-year-old Venezuelan southpaw has been very solid in his first year in Beantown in 2026, going 4-3 with a 3.15 ERA (2.62 FIP) and 1.16 WHIP with 97 strikeouts and 27 walks in 91 1/3 innings across his 17 starts. Suarez has a career-high 25.8% strikeout rate and a solid 6.9% walk rate. If he's cleared to pitch this weekend, he'll be a no-brainer must-start against the last-place Mets.

Ranger Suarez Leaves Sunday's Start Early With Groin Injury

Boston Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez (groin) was pulled from his start early on Sunday against the Los Angeles Angels in the third inning with left-groin tightness, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Suarez was seen shaking his leg and grimacing before being pulled. Before getting hurt, Suarez allowed three earned runs on six hits while walking none and striking out five in just 2 2/3 innings pitched. The 30-year-old Venezuelan southpaw is now in danger of missing his final start before the All-Star break, and he probably won't be cleared to pitch in the Midsummer Classic, either. Going into Sunday's series finale against the Halos, Suarez was 4-3 with a 2.94 ERA (2.71 FIP) and 1.13 WHIP with 92 strikeouts and 26 walks in 88 2/3 innings across 16 starts in his first year in Beantown. Suarez should be held until we know more about the severity of his injury. He has a 25.5% strikeout rate, which is the second-highest of his career, and a 7.2% walk rate. Suarez is rostered in 90% of Yahoo leagues. Fantasy managers should prepare for the possibility of him not making another start until late July.

Ranger Suarez to Start Sometime Next Week Against Former Team

Boston Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez (hamstring) will start "sometime in the Philly series" next week between Tuesday and Thursday, interim manager Chad Tracy told Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Suarez was pulled from his last start early on Sunday against the Houston Astros with tightness in his right hamstring, and the team will give the veteran lefty a little bit more time to recover before making his next appearance. Lefty Payton Tolle will start on Saturday against the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park, with right-hander Brayan Bello going in the series finale on Sunday. While Suarez might be a bit more risky in his next outing next week after tweaking his hamstring, he'll also be facing a struggling Phillies lineup that currently ranks 27th in baseball with a .682 team OPS. In his first year with the BoSox, the Venezuelan hurler has been solid, going 2-2 with a 2.77 ERA (3.27 FIP) and 0.95 WHIP with 32 strikeouts and 10 walks in 39 frames across his seven starts. Against his former team in a revenge matchup, Suarez should be returned to fantasy lineups.

Ranger Suarez Exits Sunday's Start With Hamstring Tightness

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Ranger Suarez (hamstring) was forced to make an early exit during Sunday's outing against the Houston Astros. Suarez tossed four scoreless innings before exiting the game due to what is being called right-hamstring tightness. The severity of the injury is unknown, but Suarez should undergo further testing, so fantasy managers will need to check back for more information. Losing Suarez would be a tough break for the Red Sox, who already have multiple starting pitchers on the Injured List. His next scheduled outing is against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. The team will likely wait and see how he progresses before deciding if Suarez will make that start. UPDATE: Suarez is not expected to undergo an MRI exam, which means his hamstring injury shouldn't be too serious.

Ranger Suarez Fans 10 in Second Win of Season Over Blue Jays

Boston Red Sox left-hander Ranger Suarez was dominant in his latest start on Monday in the series opener in Canada against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Suarez allowed just one hit in eight scoreless innings while walking one and striking out a season-high 10 to pick up his second win of the 2026 season. It was a nice bounce-back performance for the 30-year-old southpaw after he surrendered four runs in 4 2/3 innings his last time out against the division-rival New York Yankees. In his first year in Beantown, Suarez has been hit or miss so far, alternating excellent starts with clunkers. Overall, the Venezuelan hurler holds a 2-2 record with a 3.09 ERA (3.36 FIP), 0.94 WHIP, and 29:9 K:BB in 35 innings pitched across his six starts. Suarez has allowed four runs and gone fewer than five innings in three of his six starts, while tossing 22 scoreless innings in his other three starts. Fantasy managers will be hoping that he can put two straight strong starts together his next time out.

Ranger Suarez Agrees to Five-Year Deal With Red Sox

Free-agent left-hander Ranger Suarez agreed to a five-year deal worth $130 million with the Boston Red Sox on Wednesday, according to Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports. The Red Sox were bound to make another big move after losing third baseman Alex Bregman in free agency to the Chicago Cubs. Suarez, 30, will now join ace lefty Garrett Crochet at the top of Boston's starting rotation going into the 2026 season. Boston also acquired veteran righty Sonny Gray from the St. Louis Cardinals earlier this offseason to boost their starting rotation. Suarez isn't a big strikeout guy (career 22.1% strikeout rate) and has never reached the 200-inning mark in eight big-league seasons. However, the crafty southpaw has been lights-out in the playoffs with a 1.48 ERA in 42 2/3 innings, and he holds a strong 3.38 career ERA with a 1.27 WHIP, 705 K's, and 240 walks in 762 frames. Suarez might have the track record of a high-end starter, but he's a solid, command-driven ground-ball artist.

Ranger Suarez has Fans in the Red Sox Organization

Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports that some members of the Boston Red Sox organization are "high on free-agent left-hander Ranger Suarez," and speculates that signing Suarez could be one way for Boston to pivot after losing third baseman Alex Bregman to the Chicago Cubs in free agency. Across 157 1/3 innings (26 starts) for the Philadelphia Phillies in 2025, Suarez posted a 12-8 record with a 3.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 151 strikeouts. He lowered his walk rate to a career-best 5.8% in 2025 and now hits free agency going into his age-30 season. In Boston, Suarez would likely slot in alongside veteran right-hander Sonny Gray as one of the top starting pitching options behind ace of the staff Garrett Crochet. However, Rosenthal also reports that Suarez's market "remains unclear," so it does not appear that a signing is imminent.

Ranger Suarez "Makes a Lot of Sense" for the Mets

Buster Olney of ESPN.com reports that it "seems inevitable" that either starting pitchers Ranger Suarez or Framber Valdez will sign with the New York Mets, given their current rotation. Olney noted that Suarez "makes a lot of sense" in New York, given that he has already pitched for a big-market team during his career. Before entering free agency, the southpaw has spent his entire eight-year MLB career with the Phillies. Last summer, Suarez turned in a strong campaign, logging 157 1/3 innings to the tune of a 3.20 ERA with a 1.22 WHIP. He generated a stellar 3.16 xERA with a 5.5% barrel rate and a 31.1% hard-hit rate, placing him in the 84th percentile or higher. However, his strikeout production remained pedestrian as he only tallied 151 during the campaign. If Suarez were to sign with the Mets, he should slide in near the top of the rotation and hold high-floor SP3 value in standard leagues.

Orioles Interested in Signing Ranger Suarez

The Baltimore Orioles are among the teams interested in signing free-agent left-hander Ranger Suarez, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman. Suarez doesn't light up the radar gun, but his terrific postseason pedigree has many teams looking his way on the open market. The 30-year-old southpaw rejected the Philadelphia Phillies' one-year, $22.025 qualifying offer, so Philly will receive draft-pick compensation if he signs with another team for 2026 and beyond. He went 12-8 with a 3.20 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 151 strikeouts, and 38 walks in 157 1/3 innings over 26 regular-season starts in 2025 in his eighth big-league season with the Phils. Since Suarez's first full year in the majors in 2021, he has posted a solid 3.25 ERA with a below-average 22.5% strikeout rate and 7.5% walk rate. A move to Baltimore and the tough American League East would put Suarez in yet another tough pitching environment.
