Payton Tolle Allows One Run in Spring Training Debut

Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle tossed two innings of one-run ball in his spring training debut on Saturday afternoon. The southpaw was given the starting nod. In the opening frame, he surrendered a solo shot to Minnesota Twins third baseman Royce Lewis. In the second inning, he would toss a perfect frame and tally his lone strikeout of the contest, against outfielder Matt Wallner. Tolle is currently in contention for one of the final spots in the starting rotation and will likely need a strong showing in spring training to claim it. Last summer, the left-hander struggled in his MLB debut, posting a 6.06 ERA across his first 16 1/3 innings. However, in the minor leagues, he logged 91 2/3 innings with a strong 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a 133:23 K:BB. Given his high-end strikeout upside, he is a name to closely watch during spring training as he could be a worthy selection in the final rounds of your draft if he were to emerge as a viable starter.

Payton Tolle Looks to Strengthen Secondary Pitches

Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle plans to mix in his secondary pitches more often to further improve his fastball. According to reports by Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Tolle's fastball appears two miles per hour faster to hitters than it actually appears. The four-seamer sat at 96.7 mph but generated a much higher perceived velocity of 98.7 mph. Boston's chief baseball officer, Craig Breslow, expressed that Tolle will continue to mix in his secondary pitches in 2026, which will only improve his fastball in his first full season in the big leagues. During his brief 16 1/3-inning stint in Boston last summer, Tolle relied on his fastball 64.1% of the time, mixed his cutter 13.5% of the time, and his slider 9.5% of the time. During this stint, his four-seamer generated a modest .341 xwOBA, while his slider was highly effective, posting a 33.3% whiff rate and a .258 xwOBA. If Tolle can continue to build his secondaries, his four-seamer will take a step forward in 2026. Managers should monitor his progress as he will likely compete for the final spot in the rotation alongside Connelly Early, Patrick Sandoval, and Johan Oviedo.

Payton Tolle Not Guaranteed Spot in Starting Rotation?

Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle made his MLB debut during the 2025 season and had mixed results. The southpaw logged 19 1/3 innings to the tune of a 6.09 ERA and a 1.59 WHIP. Tolle was deployed out of the rotation in each of his first three outings but was then shifted to the bullpen over his last four. Through six innings of relief, Tolle looked much more stable, allowing only two runs while striking out seven hitters. Earlier in 2025, Tolle made his professional debut with High-A and was able to quickly progress through the Boston system, which earned him the late-season promotion. Through 91 2/3 innings split between High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A, the No. 28-ranked prospect in baseball posted a 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and a dominant 133:23 K:BB. However, managers should keep an eye on him during spring training, as he may not be guaranteed a spot in the team's starting rotation given his inconsistent debut. Additionally, the Red Sox recently signed left-hander Ranger Suarez, which will add yet another pitcher to a largely crowded rotation. For now, Tolle is best left for deeper redraft leagues given his unknown role.

Payton Tolle to Pitch Out of Bullpen for Rest of the Season

Boston Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle will be a reliever for the rest of the season in Boston, according to manager Alex Cora. With Tolle moving to the bullpen the rest of the way, left-hander Kyle Harrison will move to the starting rotation and will take on the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday, per Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. Fellow rookie Connelly Early has been much more impressive than Tolle in their first couple of big-league starts, and Early will start on four days of rest in the series finale on Sunday. Tolle, the team's No. 2 prospect per MLB Pipeline, struggled in his first three major-league starts against the Pirates, Diamondbacks, and Athletics, allowing nine earned runs on 11 hits (four homers) while walking six and striking out 12 in 10 1/3 innings. He'll serve in a long-relief role down the stretch as Boston looks to hang onto one of the final wild-card spots in the American League.

Payton Tolle to Start on Wednesday Against A's

Boston Red Sox rookie left-hander Payton Tolle will make the start on Wednesday in Sacramento against the hosting Athletics, according to manager Alex Cora. It will be Tolle's first time pitching on four days of rest this year, so Cora said the team will limit his pitch count. Left-hander Kyle Harris is also expected to join the BoSox and make his debut with the club on Wednesday, possibly as the bulk reliever behind Tolle. The 22-year-old southpaw will be making only his third major-league start and will not be a recommended streamer after surrendering five earned runs on five hits (two homers) while walking four and striking out two in just three innings in his latest start in Boston against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Sept. 5. MLB Pipeline has Tolle ranked as the team's No. 2 prospect, behind only shortstop Franklin Arias.

Payton Tolle's Next Start to be Determined

The Boston Red Sox are unsure if left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle will make his next start on Wednesday against the Cleveland Guardians, manager Alex Cora told the media. Because Tolle isn't accustomed to pitching on four days' rest, the Red Sox could wait until later in the week to give him the ball again. One of baseball's premier pitching prospects, the 22-year-old held his own in his debut on Friday. The Red Sox suffered a 4-2 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates, but Tolle didn't factor into the decision after throwing 5 1/3 innings of two-run, three-hit ball and logging eight strikeouts against two walks. He became the first Red Sox starter to punch out at least eight in his debut since Daisuke Matsuzaka in 2007.

Payton Tolle Punches Out Eight in MLB Debut

Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle struck out eight hitters in his MLB debut on Friday evening. Facing the Pittsburgh Pirates, Tolle tossed 5 1/3 innings of two-run ball with three hits and two walks. He was cruising through five innings but ran into some trouble in the sixth. Pittsburgh outfielder Tommy Pham ripped a two-run double, which did most of the damage. The 22-year-old made his professional debut with High-A this season and quickly progressed through the Boston system. Tolle needed just nine appearances in Double-A and Triple-A to prove he was ready to join Boston for the stretch run. Across 91 2/3 innings in the minor leagues, he held a 3.04 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP. Given his impressive debut, the southpaw is worth targeting in all standard leagues this weekend.
