Payton Tolle Worth a Waiver Pickup After Recent Short Outing?

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle is 4-6 with a 3.39 ERA (3.53 FIP) and 1.12 WHIP with 74 strikeouts and 23 walks in 13 starts across 74 1/3 innings pitched in just his second year in the big leagues in 2026. The 23-year-old southpaw and former second-round pick out of Texas Christian University in 2024 broke a stretch of three straight outings with three earned runs or fewer on Wednesday, when he allowed a season-high six earned runs on seven hits (two homers) while walking three and striking out five in just three innings for his sixth loss of the year. It was the first time since May that Tolle failed to go at least five innings in what was his shortest outing of the season. Despite the poor showing this week, Tolle remains one of the more intriguing young lefty arms in baseball and is still worth a pickup off the waiver wire with an upcoming matchup against the Chicago White Sox, a team that ranks seventh in OPS (.739) but fourth in strikeouts (777). Tolle ranks in the 79th percentile in chase rate and the 62nd percentile in strikeout rate despite giving up plenty of hard contact. He's currently rostered in 60% of Yahoo leagues.

Payton Tolle Shines Against the Yankees, Makes a Great Rotation Addition

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle turned in an impressive performance against the Yankees on Friday night, allowing just one hit in seven shutout innings and racking up seven strikeouts. He improved to 4-5 with the win and lowered his ERA to 2.78 with a 3.19 FIP on the year. The fiery 23-year-old lefty had allowed 10 runs in his previous three games, but his domination on Friday reminds everyone of his strikeout upside. He kept the strong Yankees lineup silent and can bring solid punchout production when he's at his best. While he has had some inconsistencies, his ceiling makes him worth adding as he continues to adjust to the majors. His emergence has been one of the few bright spots in a rough season for the Red Sox, and he can definitely make a solid addition, offering both rotation depth and upside in mixed leagues.

Fantasy Managers Need to Jump on the Payton Tolle Bandwagon

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle took his fourth loss of the season in his most recent outing on June 16 versus the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays, when he allowed three earned runs on four hits (two homers) while walking two and striking out six in just five innings of work. He gave up a season-high four earned runs in six innings for a loss in his previous outing on June 9 against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays, but the 23-year-old southpaw remains one of the best young left-handed arms to roster in fantasy baseball leagues in just his second year in the league. The former second-round pick in 2024 out of Texas Christian University is 3-4 in 2026 with a strong 2.93 ERA (3.08 FIP) and 1.06 WHIP with 60 strikeouts and 16 walks in 58 1/3 innings over his 10 starts after having an ERA over 6.00 with a 1.59 WHIP and 19:8 K:BB in 16 1/3 frames in his first seven MLB appearances (three starts) in 2025. Tolle has a 25.5% strikeout rate since debuting last year and a 7.7% walk rate. He has done enough to stick around in Boston's starting rotation and is an emerging young arm with his arrow pointed up. Tolle has bounce-back potential in his next scheduled start against the banged-up Seattle Mariners.

Payton Tolle Still Worth Adding After Recent Loss?

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle was hit around a bit in his most recent start on June 9 in a loss to the first-place Tampa Bay Rays, surrendering four earned runs on a season-high nine hits allowed while walking one and striking out only three in his six innings of work. It wasn't Tolle's finest showing, but he deserves a pass given the opponent. Overall, the 23-year-old southpaw has been strong in just his second MLB campaign, going 3-3 with a 2.70 ERA (2.71 FIP) and 1.05 WHIP with 54 strikeouts and 14 walks in 53 1/3 innings pitched across his nine starts. Despite allowing a season-high nine hits, Tolle, a second-rounder in 2024 out of Texas Christian University, was one out away from picking up his sixth quality start of 2026 in his nine outings. Tolle sits in the 82nd percentile in hard-hit rate and the 79th percentile in walk rate, and his overall body of work through his first 16 big-league outings, dating back to last season, makes him one of the more intriguing young left-handed arms in the majors. Next on tap is a matchup against the division-rival Toronto Blue Jays. Tolle allowed three earned runs with four walks and four strikeouts against them back on April 28 in just his second start of the season.

Payton Tolle Continues to Dominate, a Must-Roster Player in All Formats

Boston Red Sox top pitching prospect out of TCU, Payton Tolle, has dominated since his call-up to the Red Sox on April 23, as he has now made eight starts and has a 3-2 record, 2.28 ERA, 0.97 WHIP, and 51 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings pitched. More impressively, his underlying data fully support his breakout (2.31 xERA). After a cup of coffee with the Red Sox last season, pitching in seven games, Tolle has taken full advantage of his opportunity in 2026. While he isn't generating an elite ground ball rate, all of his other metrics rank in the 65th percentile or better. Tolle also provides fantasy managers with strong strikeout upside, as evidenced by his 27.3 percent strikeout rate, and is a WHIP specialist, thanks to his solid command (7 percent walk rate) and .191 xBA, which keeps the bases fairly empty and contributes to that category as well. While his wins are down a bit, that is more a testament to the Red Sox offense than to his production. Fantasy managers should continue to start Tolle with confidence, and if he is on the waiver wire in shallower formats, he is a must-add player.

Payton Tolle a Priority Addition as Strikeout Rate Climbs

Boston Red Sox starter Payton Tolle has solidified himself as a key rotation piece for the team, and in doing so, he has also emerged as a high-priority waiver wire target for fantasy baseball managers. Tolle started the year in Triple-A, but he was called up in late April and has been terrific since then. Across seven big-league starts, he owns a 2.66 ERA, 2.19 xERA, 10.02 K/9, 2.40 BB/9, and 0.65 HR/9. His ground ball rate is a modest 34%, but that's close to his career average in the minors, and we're not concerned about it because his HR/9 rate is low. Strikeouts have always been one of Tolle's strengths, and he has put that on display lately. He has 16 strikeouts over his last 10.2 innings of work. He is also 1-0 over his last three starts, as well as 2-1 over his last five starts. With a high strikeout rate, low walk rate, low home run rate, and low ERA -- as well as an ability to pitch deep into games -- Tolle is a must-add name on the waiver wire. The lefty is available in 44% of leagues, and he ranks as the #46 starting pitcher in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings.

Payton Tolle Worth a Waiver-Wire Pickup Despite Tough Upcoming Matchup

Even though Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle is scheduled to face off against the first-place Atlanta Braves in his next outing this week, he has done enough to warrant waiver-wire consideration in fantasy leagues where he's still available. The 23-year-old southpaw picked up another quality start by allowing three earned runs in six innings while walking two and striking out nine for a no-decision in his last outing on May 22 against the Minnesota Twins. Tolle now has four quality starts in his six starts in 2026, posting a 2.45 ERA (2.84 FIP) and 0.82 WHIP with 39 strikeouts and only nine walks in 36 2/3 innings pitched. He has yet to allow more than three earned runs in an outing and is one of the more promising, young left-handed arms in all of baseball. Tolle made his big-league debut last year with the BoSox and wasn't quite as good, recording a 6.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP with 19 K's and eight walks in 16 1/3 frames over seven appearances (three starts). Tolle is rostered in 62% of Yahoo leagues, and he'll have a nice test this week against Atlanta.

Payton Tolle Worth a Waiver Pickup Despite Tough Upcoming Matchup

Boston Red Sox left-hander Payton Tolle is worth considering off the waiver wire despite allowing a season-high seven hits and three earned runs in five innings in a loss in his last outing against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays. The 23-year-old former second-rounder in 2024 out of TCU is one of the more promising young left-handed arms in baseball, and he has two quality starts in his four outings so far in 2026. Tolle also hasn't allowed more than three earned runs in any of his four starts, although he'll have a difficult challenge his next time out against the first-place Atlanta Braves. In his four starts (22 2/3 innings), Tolle has pitched to a 2.78 ERA (2.80 FIP) and 0.88 WHIP with 27 strikeouts and only six walks. His advanced metrics are solid as well, with an xwOBA in the 97th percentile, a strikeout rate in the 93rd percentile, and a walk rate in the 76th percentile. Tolle struggled to a 6.06 ERA and 1.59 WHIP in his first seven MLB outings (three starts) for Boston last year, but he features a diverse arsenal and a fastball in the upper-90s. The stuff is real, and he's available in more than half of Yahoo leagues.

Payton Tolle is Named Sunday's Starter

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle will take the mound for Sunday's game against the Tampa Bay Rays. Tolle was supposed to start on Saturday, but the contest was rained out. Brayan Bello was slated to start on Sunday, but he'll have his start pushed back. The Red Sox have a scheduled off day on Monday, so they'll evaluate the starting rotation after that. It's possible that Bello has his next start pushed back further than Tuesday. Fantasy managers who have Tolle rostered should make sure he's in their lineups ahead of first pitch on Sunday.

Payton Tolle's Fastball Velocity Was Down Over Two MPH in Start on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle was electric in his MLB debut on April 23 against the New York Yankees, striking out 11 over six innings of one-run ball. However, the 23-year-old had a much tougher time of it in his second start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing three hits, three earned runs, and four walks across 4 2/3 innings. Per Zach Worden of MLB.com, Tolle's fastball velocity was down over two miles per hour from his first start. While Tolle does not appear to be dealing with an injury, the velocity drop should still be at least a small red flag for fantasy managers. The young left-hander remains a high-upside fantasy starting pitcher, but his fastball velocity will be something for managers to monitor in his next start, which will likely be in Detroit against the Tigers.
