Payton Tolle's Fastball Velocity Was Down Over Two MPH in Start on Tuesday

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle was electric in his MLB debut on April 23 against the New York Yankees, striking out 11 over six innings of one-run ball. However, the 23-year-old had a much tougher time of it in his second start against the Toronto Blue Jays on Tuesday, allowing three hits, three earned runs, and four walks across 4 2/3 innings. Per Zach Worden of MLB.com, Tolle's fastball velocity was down over two miles per hour from his first start. While Tolle does not appear to be dealing with an injury, the velocity drop should still be at least a small red flag for fantasy managers. The young left-hander remains a high-upside fantasy starting pitcher, but his fastball velocity will be something for managers to monitor in his next start, which will likely be in Detroit against the Tigers.

Payton Tolle Strikes Out 11 in Season Debut, a Must-Add off the Waiver Wire

Boston Red Sox 23-year-old second-round pick in 2024 out of TCU, Payton Tolle, was fantastic in his 2026 MLB debut against the division-rival New York Yankees. Tolle toed the rubber in the third game of the series in Fenway, and showed the world why he is the No. 1-ranked prospect in the Red Sox's organization and 15th overall according to MLB's Top 100 Prospects. Over six innings of work, he allowed three hits, one earned run, one walk, and had eleven strikeouts with 18 whiffs and a 38 percent CSW rate (Called Strikes + Whiffs). Additionally, Tolle hit 99.5 mph on the radar gun. Unfortunately, the Red Sox would end up losing the game 4-2, but not by a lack of effort from Tolle. Fantasy managers who were proactive on the waiver wire may have found themselves a potential league winner off the waiver wire. If still available, Tolle is a must-add in all formats, and fantasy managers should be prepared to spend FAAB dollars to get him.

Payton Tolle Confirmed to Start on Thursday

Boston Red Sox pitcher Payton Tolle will start on Thursday, as expected, as the Red Sox try to avoid a sweep at the hands of the Yankees in Boston. Tolle was held out of his last start in Triple-A in anticipation of his promotion, and he'll get a chance to earn his spot in the rotation over the next few weeks. In his three starts in Triple-A this season, Tolle gave up five runs in 15 innings while piling up 19 strikeouts. He threw five scoreless innings with six strikeouts in his most recent start for the Worcester Red Sox against the Columbus Clippers. Last season, Tolle pitched 16 1/3 innings in the majors with a 6.06 ERA, 6.26 FIP, and 19 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings. He has high strikeout upside, and the 23-year-old lefty will be an important young pitcher to watch while he fills in for the injured Sonny Gray (hamstring) for the next few weeks.

Payton Tolle Likely to Pitch for Red Sox on Thursday

The Boston Red Sox remain "very likely" to pitch left-hander Payton Tolle in Thursday's series finale against the division-rival New York Yankees, sources told Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Manager Alex Cora has declined to officially name a starter for Thursday's game and said that Eduardo Rivera is another candidate to start. The 23-year-old Tolle was skipped in the starting rotation at Triple-A Worcester over the weekend and is believed to be a strong candidate to take the rotation spot of right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring), who landed on the 15-day injured list after getting injured in his start on Monday. If Tolle doesn't start on Thursday against New York, he could make his 2026 debut this weekend against the Baltimore Orioles. Tolle had an ERA over 6.00 with 19 strikeouts and eight walks in 16 1/3 innings in a small sample size in his MLB debut in 2025, but he's one of the more intriguing young pitching prospects in the game and is worth a stash right now in deep-mixed leagues. The former second-rounder is only rostered in 24% of Yahoo leagues currently.

"Pretty Good Likelihood" Payton Tolle Joins Boston This Weekend

There is a "pretty good likelihood" that Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle joins the big-league roster this week, according to Katie Morrison-O'Day of MassLive.com. As of now, Tolle isn't scheduled to pitch at Triple-A Worcester. Tolle will most likely be recalled from the minors to make his 2026 debut for Boston this weekend against the division-rival Baltimore Orioles. Veteran right-hander Sonny Gray (hamstring) was officially placed on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday after getting hurt in his start against the Detroit Tigers on Monday, and Tolle is expected to take his place in the starting rotation in the majors. Gray's next turn in the rotation was scheduled to come on Sunday in Baltimore. Tolle, a second-rounder in 2024 out of TCU, struggled in his big-league debut last year, posting a 6.06 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 19:8 K:BB in 16 1/3 innings across seven outings (three starts). The hard-throwing left-hander is one of the more intriguing young pitching prospects in the game, and he's worth a waiver-wire pickup now in mixed leagues. Tolle is currently rostered in only 15% of Yahoo leagues.

Payton Tolle Viewed as "Top Candidate" to Enter Boston Rotation

Boston Red Sox starting pitcher Payton Tolle is one of the team's top options to replace Sonny Gray (hamstring) in the rotation. Gray was forced to leave his start on Monday after 2 2/3 innings on Monday when he felt a "grab" in his right hamstring. The issue is not thought to be serious, but he will miss at least a couple of turns through the rotation, potentially opening the door for Tolle. In his three starts in Triple-A this season, Tolle has allowed five runs in 15 innings with 19 strikeouts. His most recent outing was his strongest one of the year, as he worked five scoreless innings with six strikeouts against the Columbus Clippers. Tolle has high strikeout upside, and the 23-year-old lefty will be a name to watch on the waiver wire if he does get the call to fill a spot in the rotation in the coming weeks.

Payton Tolle a Top Name to Stash Following Recent Red Sox Injury

Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Payton Tolle potentially became even more fantasy relevant after Boston starter Sonny Gray (hamstring) was removed from his outing on Monday against the Tigers in the third inning with what is being described as right hamstring tightness. Tolle hasn't pitched for Triple-A Worcester since April 12, so he could be fresh and is already on the 40-man roster. Boston's top-ranked prospect debuted with the club in August last year and was fairly solid outside of one poor outing, racking up 19 strikeouts in 16 1/3 innings pitched (IP) both as a starter and a reliever. The southpaw had a hiccup in his first outing at Triple-A this year, but has shone over his last two turns, allowing just one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out 13 batters in 11 IP. The 23-year-old's strikeout upside already made him a worthy stash candidate in most formats, but with the likelihood of a call-up now much higher, the time is now to grab him off the waiver wire.

Payton Tolle Remains Elite Stash Option in All Formats

Boston Red Sox left-handed pitching prospect Payton Tolle remains an elite high-end stash option in all formats for Week 4 of the fantasy season. Tolle was unable to crack the Opening Day rotation but has quickly found his footing at Triple-A and is knocking on the MLB door. Since allowing four runs in his season debut, facing Triple-A Syracuse, the hard-throwing southpaw has quickly flipped the script, logging 11 innings of two-run ball (one earned run) with 13 punchouts and just two free passes. Last summer, Tolle made his MLB debut and struggled over his short 16 1/3 inning stint, allowing 11 earned runs. However, in the minor leagues, Tolle struck out an impressive 133 hitters over 91 2/3 innings. While his path to joining the MLB rotation does not appear clear at the moment, his elite strikeout upside makes him a top stash option in all formats.

Payton Tolle Remains a High-End Stash Ahead of Week 4

Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Payton Tolle is biding his time in Worcester until it is his turn to get the call to the majors, which shouldn't be long now. Boston's top-ranked prospect was roughed up in his first start at Triple-A this year, but has been very effective in his last two turns through the rotation, allowing one earned run on seven hits and two walks while striking out 13 in 11 innings of work in those two outings. After breezing through three levels of the minors in 2025, recording a 3.04 ERA, 0.99 WHIP, and 133 strikeouts in 91 2/3 innings pitched, the southpaw made his big league debut at the end of August. Despite some growing pains, the former second-round draft pick displayed the strikeout potential, tallying 19 strikeouts in 16 1/3 IP. With some more seasoning under his belt, the 23-year-old should fare better this time around once a spot opens up in the big league rotation, and he remains a must-stash in deeper leagues; he could even be a viable waiver add in shallower formats for managers looking for help.

Payton Tolle Carries High-End Stash Upside Entering Week 3

Boston Red Sox pitching prospect Payton Tolle remains a must-stash candidate in Week 3 of the fantasy baseball season. Tolle is coming off another strong showing at Triple-A Worcester, where he logged five shutout innings with just three hits and one walk while striking out six hitters. In his previous outing, Tolle was just as sharp, logging six innings of two-run ball (one earned run) with seven punchouts and four hits. While the southpaw fell short of the Opening Day rotation, he could be on the verge of returning to Boston. Last week, the Red Sox placed right-handed starter Johan Oviedo (elbow) on the 15-day injured list, which opens a spot on the roster for Tolle. While the rotation is filled at the moment, Tolle is the next candidate waiting in the wings. Given that he struck out 133 hitters over 91 2/3 innings last summer, he should be viewed as the top pitcher to stash in all formats.
