Ben Rortvedt, Jahmai Jones In The Mix For Roster Spots

New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone said that catcher Ben Rortvedt and outfielder Jahmai Jones remain in the mix for Opening Day roster spots. Austin Wells has already made the team, but the Yankees could carry Rortvedt as their third catcher to begin the season. Jose Trevino is the club's other backstop. The 26-year-old Rortvedt is out of minor-league options, so the Yankees may not want to risk losing him to another club. He hit just .118/.241/.221 with two homers in 32 games for the Yanks in 2023 and is unlikely to see much playing time in 2024 for the Bombers. Jones, 26, has looked overmatched in 36 big-league games over three seasons after he was a second-round pick by the Angels in 2015. However, he's intrigued the Yankees as a bench option this spring by hitting .286 with a home run, four RBI and a steal in 14 Grapefruit League games.

Yankees Claim Jahmai Jones Off Waivers From Brewers

The New York Yankees claimed infielder Jahmai Jones off waivers from the Milwaukee Brewers on Wednesday and designated infielder Jordan Groshans for assignment in a corresponding move to make room on the 40-man roster for Jones. The 26-year-old Jones, a former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels from Wesleyan School, made seven appearances at the big-league level for the Brew Crew in 2023, going 2-for-10 (.200) with no homers and three RBI. It was his first time appearing in the majors since 2021 with the Baltimore Orioles, when he went 10-for-67 (.149) with no homers and three RBI in 26 contests. Jones looked good offensively in the minors last year, but he has yet to put it together at the big-league level in 36 games in three seasons.

Brewers Option Jahmai Jones To Triple-A

The Milwaukee Brewers optioned infielder Jahmai Jones to Triple-A Nashville on Monday. In his first four games with the Brew Crew in the last week, Jones went 2-for-4 with a double, three RBI, a stolen base and a run scored in five plate appearances, but he had made only one start. The Brewers will send him back to the minors during the All-Star break, but there's a chance the 25-year-old middle infielder will be back shortly for Milwaukee in the second half of the season to continue serving as infield depth. Jones has only played in three MLB seasons and has struggled with a .192/.250/.244 slash line with no homers, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 33 games.

Brian Anderson On Paternity List, Brewers Sign Jahmai Jones

The Milwaukee Brewers placed infielder Brian Anderson on the paternity list on Monday and signed free-agent utility man Jahmai Jones to an undisclosed deal in a corresponding move and added him to the 26-man roster. Anderson will be away from the team for three days at the most. With the 30-year-old away, Andruw Monasterio is starting at the hot corner and is hitting sixth in the lineup against Chicago Cubs left-hander Drew Smyly on Monday. Anderson is hitting just .227 (62-for-273) on the year, but he does have nine homers in 80 games in his first year in Milwaukee. Jones, a former top-100 prospect, latches on with another team quickly after opting out of his minor-league deal with the Dodgers over the weekend. The 25-year-old could see some playing time around Milwaukee's infield in the short term.

Dodgers Pick Up Jahmai Jones

The Los Angeles Dodgers signed former Los Angeles Angels and Baltimore Orioles second base prospect Jahmai Jones (elbow) to a minor league deal last month. The 25-year-old was designated for assignment by the Orioles in May after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his elbow. It remains to be seen if Jones will be ready for spring training next year, but the Dodgers are taking a flier on the second baseman/outfielder. He has played in 29 games with the Angels and Orioles in 2020 and 2021, hitting just .176/.228/.216 with no homers, four RBI, seven runs scored and a stolen base in 79 plate appearances. In 27 games at Triple-A Norfolk this year, he hit .212/.339/.343 with two homers, seven RBI, 15 runs scored and two steals.

Jahmai Jones Designated For Assignment

The Baltimore Orioles designated outfield prospect Jahmai Jones (elbow) for assignment on Saturday and selected the contract of right-hander Cody Sedlock from Triple-A Norfolk in a corresponding move. The team also optioned right-hander Beau Sulser to Norfolk and added right-hander Denyi Reyes to serve as the 27th man for their Saturday doubleheader. Jones, the team's No. 22 prospect per MLB Pipeline, had Tommy John surgery on Friday and will miss the rest of the 2022 season. If he goes unclaimed on waivers, he'll remain in the Orioles organization. The 24-year-old was hitting .212/.339/.343 with two home runs, seven RBI and two stolen bases in 27 games for Norfolk this year before undergoing surgery.

Jahmai Jones Has Tommy John Surgery

Baltimore Orioles second baseman/outfielder Jahmai Jones (elbow) underwent successful Tommy John surgery on his right elbow on Friday, according to the team. The procedure was performed by Dr. Timothy Kremchek in Cincinnati. Jones initially went on the injured list in the minor leagues in the middle of May due to right elbow inflammation, and he'll now miss the rest of the 2022 season. The 24-year-old, who is the Orioles No. 22 prospect per MLB Pipeline, played in 27 games for Triple-A Norfolk before his injury and was hitting .212/.339/.343 with two home runs, seven RBI, 15 runs scored and two stolen bases in 118 plate appearances. In 26 games for Baltimore in 2021, Jones hit .149 with no homers, three RBI and a stolen base.

Orioles Call Up Jahmai Jones From Triple-A

The Baltimore Orioles called up second baseman/outfielder Jahmai Jones from Triple-A Norfolk on Monday. Richie Martin was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move. Jones is the team's 18th overall prospect. He was acquired by the organization this offseason in the trade that sent Alex Cobb to the Los Angeles Angels. The 24-year-old has flashed some intriguing versatility in the minors this year. Over 69 games at Triple-A, he slashed .238/.329/.417 with 10 home runs, 10 stolen bases, 35 RBI and 33 runs. He's worth keeping an eye on in all fantasy formats to see how he performs and how often the Orioles play him.

Jahmai Jones Optioned To Triple-A

Baltimore Orioles second baseman Jahmai Jones was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk last Friday, per MASN Sports' Rock Kubatko. The 23-year-old joined a crowded O's infield this spring with just seven big-league plate appearances and managed to slash just .136/.240/.273 throughout the spring, so it is not all that surprising that he got optioned. Ramon Urias and Pat Valaika are expected to start at second for the O's. Jones is still young and the O's are in rebuild mode, so he could potentially join the team at some point during the season. He has little fantasy value at this time.

Orioles Acquire Jahmai Jones From Angels

The Baltimore Orioles acquired second baseman Jahmai Jones from the Los Angeles Angels on Monday in exchange for starting pitcher Alex Cobb, according to sources. Jones was the Angels second-round pick in 2015 and was ranked by MLB Pipeline as the team's No. 7 prospect. Baltimore is also paying more than half of Cobb's $15 million salary for the 2021 season. The 23-year-old can also play the outfield and could find his way to the big-league level with the rebuilding O's at some point in 2021. He had three hits in his first seven major league at-bats with the Angels last season, but he's never played above Double-A in the minors. In 130 games with Double-A Mobile in 2019, Jones slashed .234/.308/.324 with five home runs, 50 RBI and nine stolen bases in 544 plate appearances. He could probably use a little more minor league seasoning, but Jones is one to keep an eye on in dynasty/keeper leagues, as he could become a solid regular at the keystone.
