Triston Casas Shut Down With Abdominal Strain

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (abdomen, knee) is dealing with an abdominal strain and will be shut down until he feels better, according to Tim Healey of The Boston Globe. The good news is that Casas' abdominal strain is not related to his rib-cage issue from two years ago, according to manager Alex Cora. Once Casas is feeling better, he'll have to go through a spring training-style buildup, so it's going to be a while before we see him back in the big leagues. The 26-year-old left-handed slugger only made it through 29 games in 2025 before suffering a season-ending patellar tendon tear. Casas hit only .182/.277/.303 with three homers and 11 RBI in those 29 games, too. In 132 games in 2023 in his first full season in the majors, Casas hit .263 with 24 home runs and 65 RBI in 502 plate appearances, but injuries have wrecked his last two seasons. Willson Contreras is locked in at first base for the BoSox now, so when Casas is finally ready to make his 2026 debut, he could be battling for at-bats in the designated-hitter role.

Triston Casas to be Out a While With Rib Injury

The Boston Red Sox are still waiting for imaging results on first baseman Triston Casas (rib, knee), who is dealing with an intercostal (rib muscle) strain on his left side that is expected to keep him out for a while, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. "Right now, we're going to treat it like an oblique, rib injury," manager Alex Cora said. "He's going to be out for a while, but we're still waiting for the news from the doctor." It's yet another injury for Casas, who is near the end of a long road back from a ruptured patellar tendon in his left knee that ended his season prematurely in 2025. The strength in his left knee continued to improve recently, but he paused his progression during the first week of April when he felt pain on his left side. Casas shut things down when he felt enough pain while trying to hit off a tee on Monday. The team expects to know more about Casas' situation when a final diagnosis is given on Monday or Tuesday. It's believed that he has avoided a worst-case scenario, but it's another setback for a young lefty slugger who hasn't caught a break in the health department.

Triston Casas to Start Swinging Progression on Monday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee, ribs) will start a hitting progression again on Monday, manager Alex Cora told Ari Alexander of WHDH. Casas had been swinging a bat at the end of March, but he suffered a setback this past week and had to temporarily pause his rehab. The setback was actually a new rib injury, and was fortunately not related to the left patellar tendon rupture he suffered last May. The new injury will nevertheless delay his return to the majors, but the fact that he's going to restart his hitting progression in the next few days is a good sign. Casas is looking to bounce back after posting a subpar .182/.277/.303 slash line with a 24.1% strikeout rate and 56 wRC+ through 29 games early last season. Willson Contreras remains the Red Sox' everyday first baseman for now, with Andruw Monasterio presumably available to play the position in an emergency.

Triston Casas Suffers Setback During Rehab

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) has encountered a setback in his recovery from a ruptured left patellar tendon that he suffered back in 2025. The former first-rounder is now dealing with sore ribs, per manager Alex Cora. At least the setback is not related to his knee, but Cora stated that they need to "shut it down for a while... we have to slow it down." Casas was placed on the 10-day injured list to begin the season, and a mid-to-late-May return to the majors was the original estimate, however, a return closer to midseason seems more realistic at this point. The team acquired Willson Contreras in the offseason to man first, but he is just 2-for-17 (.118) to begin the season, and if he doesn't pick it up at the plate, there could be a real competition for playing time whenever Casas returns. The 6-foot-4 left-handed slugger has legit power, belting 40 home runs over his last 224 games (~29 home runs per 162 games), but will be waiver wire fodder until he is getting regular at-bats.

Triston Casas Placed on 10-Day Injured List to Start the Season

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. This was not a surprise as the 6-foot-4 slugger was unable to participate in any Grapefruit League action as he continues to recover from a ruptured left patellar tendon that he suffered in 2025. He recently faced live hitters and has been cleared to run the bases and slide, but with no rehab assignment scheduled yet, it's not certain when he might be able to return to the majors. Mid-to-late May is probably a good estimate based on the usual timeline, but there is no rush as the team acquired Willson Contreras in the offseason to man first base, and before his injury last year, the left-handed hitter was slashing just .182/.277/.303, so they may want to make sure he's fully knocked the rust off before he competes for at-bats with the big league club. The former first-rounder does have some power, though, as he belted 24 home runs in 2023 in 132 games, so the 26-year-old's progress is certainly worth monitoring for fantasy.

Triston Casas to Stay Back in Fort Myers

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) will stay in Fort Myers to continue his recovery, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. Casas suffered a ruptured left patellar tendon on May 2, 2025, and hasn't played since then. At this point, it seems likely he'll remain sidelined on the one-year anniversary of his injury. The first baseman didn't get into any Grapefruit League games this spring, but he did log some innings in a minor league game. So far, Casas has been cleared to hit against live pitching, but not run the bases or slide. Once he's cleared for those activities, the Red Sox can schedule him for a rehab assignment in Triple-A. He remains on track for a return sometime in mid-to-late May, but even when he gets back to the majors, he'll have to compete for playing time. Willson Contreras, acquired from the Cardinals during the offseason, is Boston's projected everyday first baseman.

Triston Casas Plays in Minor-League Game on Monday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) played in a minor-league game on Monday and showed that his hit tool is still sharp, hitting a double, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Casas has been cleared to take at-bats on the minor-league side of things in spring training, but he has yet to be cleared to run the bases or slide. The 26-year-old left-handed slugger is most likely to continue to serve as the designated hitter in minor-league games for the rest of camp as he continues to work his way back from a surgically-repaired left knee. The Red Sox aren't going to rush Casas back after trading for first baseman Willson Contreras in the offseason. Fantasy managers hoping that Casas can bounce back in 2026 need to be prepared for him to potentially miss the first month of the 2026 regular season as he continues to get his legs back underneath him. Casas hasn't been able to reach his true potential in the big leagues due to injury, making him RotoBaller's No. 53 fantasy first baseman.

Triston Casas Won't Play in Any Grapefruit League Games

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) has stated that he will not participate in any Grapefruit League action. The 6-foot-4 slugger had previously indicated that he'd hoped to get some games in before the regular season begins, but this appears to push back his timeline somewhat. The former first-round draft pick is working his way back from patellar tendon surgery on his left knee, but has yet to work on baserunning and sliding as part of the rehab process. Once the left-handed hitter is ready to return to the Red Sox lineup, his powerful bat should have some fantasy appeal, having belted 24 home runs back in 2023 when he logged 132 games, so it's worth keeping an eye on his progress.

Triston Casas Thinks he Could be Ready by Opening Day

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) is holding out hope that he'll be ready to play by Opening Day in late March, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. "I still have a couple benchmarks like sliding and running bases that I haven't tackled yet that I want to feel perfectly comfortable going into a game having done multiple times and recovered from, and then over the weeks felt like I've developed that skill again. But my health right now is in a really good place compared to where it's been in the past," Casas said. A torn patellar tendon limited Casas to 29 games in 2025, and he's likely to either begin this season on the injured list or at Triple-A Worcester as he works his way back to 100%. And when the 26-year-old left-handed slugger is ready, he won't be the primary first baseman after Boston acquired Willson Contreras in a trade this offseason. Casas' fantasy baseball stock has dropped considerably.

Triston Casas a Fit for Designated Hitter Role?

Boston Red Sox first baseman Triston Casas (knee) will do drills independently when the team holds its first full-squad spring training workout on Sunday, according to Ian Browne of MLB.com. Casas has some catching up to do after tearing his left patellar tendon on May 2 of last year. Offseason acquisition Willson Contreras has taken his primary position (first base), but Casas thinks the BoSox will find a place for him when he's fully healthy. "When I'm healthy, I fit on any team," said Casas. Browne writes that designated hitter could be a "nice fallback" for Casas once he's 100% healthy. However, Boston could need the DH spot to deploy whichever player can't fit in the outfield on a given day. Casas said that medical professionals told him his injury typically takes a year of full recovery, which would put him on track to play again around May 1. The Red Sox's lineup lacks power, so they could use Casas' bat in their lineup, but the 26-year-old might not be ready for Opening Day, and he might not have a full-time role when he makes his season debut.
