Carlos Narvaez to Remain Boston's Starting Catcher

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez will be the team's starting catcher again in 2026, according to Christopher Smith of MassLive.com. Manager Alex Cora revealed on Saturday that Narvaez's knee started to bother him in just the third game of the season and his first start behind the plate on March 29 against the Texas Rangers. "He was banged up the whole season," Cora said. Narvaez had a left-knee meniscesctomy right after the 2025 season ended. He missed three straight games from Aug. 6-9 but avoided going on the injured list during his rookie campaign. The 27-year-old was still one of the best defensive catchers in the league, although his offensive numbers tailed off in the second half. The Venezuelan backstop finished with a .241/.306/.419 slash line .726 OPS, 15 homers, and 50 RBI in 118 regular-season games. Narvaez has decent offensive skills for a catcher, but his poor plate discipline should keep his ceiling on the lower side as a No. 2 catcher in fantasy.

Carlos Narvaez Undergoes Knee Surgery

The Boston Red Sox announced that catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) underwent a successful left-knee meniscectomy on Wednesday, according to Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald. The procedure was performed by Dr. Eric Berkson at Mass General Brigham Healthcare Center. Fellow backstop Connor Wong also had hand surgery this week, but both catchers are expected to be fine for the start of spring training in mid-February of next year. Narvaez played through a meniscus injury in his knee for much of the second half of the season, which probably helps explain why he hit just .187 (28-for-150) with 44 strikeouts and only eight walks in 45 games after the All-Star break. Still, the Venezuelan was much more productive than Connor Wong and stole the starting gig from him early on in 2025. Narvaez had 15 long balls and 50 RBI in 118 games and is set to enter spring training as Boston's starting catcher in 2026.

Carlos Narvaez Battling Knee Soreness

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) has been battling knee soreness of late, which is the reason for his absence from the lineup earlier in the week. While he did return to play on Friday night, he was absent from Saturday's lineup, giving way to the possibility that he could be fatigued or still suffering from recurring soreness. Since the All-Star Break, the 26-year-old has struggled at the plate to the tune of a .130/.161/.296 slash line over 16 games played. It remains to be seen if additional rest can lead to a better approach at the plate. He can stay on the waiver wire in most fantasy leagues.

Carlos Narvaez Starting on Monday Against Astros

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) is behind the plate and is batting ninth in Monday's series opener against the hosting Houston Astros and right-hander Cristian Javier at Daikin Park. Narvaez will return to action for the first time since last Tuesday due to a sore left knee. As long as the 26-year-old's knee issues don't crop up again, he's expected to be the primary backstop for the Red Sox the rest of the way. The Venezuelan is in his first year in Beantown and only his second in the big leagues and is hitting .248/.319/.409 with a .729 OPS, nine home runs, 33 RBI and 41 runs scored in 86 games played. Narvaez only played six games with the New York Yankees in 2024, so this is essentially his rookie season. Since the All-Star break, Narvaez has gone 5-for-45 (.111) with a homer, two RBI and 14 strikeouts in 13 games played.

Carlos Narvaez Expected to Return on Monday

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) remains out of the starting lineup ahead of Sunday's game against the San Diego Padres. This marks the fourth game in a row that Narvaez has missed with a knee issue. The plan is for Narvaez to get back into the lineup for Monday's game against the Houston Astros. In the meantime, Connor Wong will handle the catching duties. Fantasy managers should check back to see if Narvaez is back in the lineup on Monday.

Carlos Narvaez Absent on Wednesday

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) is out of the starting lineup ahead of Wednesday's game against the Kansas City Royals. Narvaez reportedly looked to be limping during Tuesday's game, so he'll take a seat here due to knee soreness. Manager Alex Cora downplayed the severity of the issue and believes Narvaez will be ready to play on Friday. Connor Wong will do the catching and bat ninth versus right-hander Michael Wacha on Wednesday. Fantasy managers should adjust their lineups accordingly with Narvaez sidelined.

Carlos Narvaez Sitting on Saturday

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez will take a seat on Saturday when the Red Sox continue a series against the San Francisco Giants. The backstop was given the starting nod during Friday's series opener but went 0-for-5 at the plate with three strikeouts. He will cede catching duties this afternoon to Connor Wong. Fantasy managers should expect Narvaez to return to action on Sunday. Narvaez has enjoyed an impressive campaign through the first half, holding a .270/.356/.439 line with six home runs and a stolen base. During this stretch, he has generated a 12.1% barrel rate and a 44.7% hard-hit rate. He also sits in the 98th percentile in Blocks Above Average. Wong is best to fade in DFS this afternoon as he enters this game holding a low .154 AVG.

Carlos Narvaez Sitting on Wednesday

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez is not present in Wednesday's starting lineup in Seattle against the Mariners. Connor Wong is doing the catching for left-hander Garrett Crochet and will hit ninth against Mariners right-hander Luis Castillo. Narvaez has gone off in the first half of 2025 to over starting duties behind the plate from Wong, although his xBA of .238 indicates he's due for plenty of regression in the second half. Wong had a strong 2024 season but has come back to Earth since and is slashing .179/.289/.179 since the start of May. Wong will not be attractive in DFS lineups against Castillo and has gone hitless against him in five career at-bats.

Carlos Narvaez, Wilyer Abreu Out on Monday

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez and outfielder Wilyer Abreu are out of the starting lineup for Monday's series opener against the division-rival Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park. Connor Wong is doing the catching and batting ninth, and Ceddanne Rafaela is in right field and hitting eighth against Rays right-hander Shane Baz. Narvaez has been one of the most valuable catchers in baseball this year and has taken over starting duties from Wong in Beantown by hitting .282 (48-for-170) with six homers, 22 RBI and 28 runs scored. His .244 xBA signals regression is likely coming, though. It's just the second time all year that Abreu is sitting against a righty, and it comes with the 25-year-old recording just two hits in 14 at-bats with eight K's in seven games in June. With top outfield prospect Roman Anthony now in town, Abreu could start to lose more playing time.

Carlos Narvaez Out Against Brewers

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez will take a seat for Wednesday's series finale in Milwaukee against the Brewers at American Family Field. Connor Wong will do the catching for right-hander Brayan Bello and will hit eighth against Brewers right-hander Freddy Peralta. Narvaez will get a breather on getaway day after making three straight starts behind the dish for Boston. The 26-year-old backstop has been one of the team's best hitters in May and now has his season slash line up to .291/.359/.468 with an .827 OPS, five home runs, 17 RBI, 20 runs scored and a steal in 141 at-bats. He broke an eight-game hitting streak on Tuesday by going 0-for-3, but Narvaez is hitting .381 (24-for-63) in May with two homers and nine RBI in 19 games. Wong has struggled to get going in 2025 after a breakout last year. He's hitting .146 (7-for-48) and is still looking for his first home run and RBI.
