Deivi García News

Deivi Garcia, Clarke Schmidt Don't Make Opening Day Roster

New York Yankees pitching prospects Deivi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt will start the season at the team's alternate training site. Manager Aaron Boone said the team thinks the 21-year-old Garcia needs more seasoning after his rough exhibition start on Monday against the Phillies. Schmidt's absence on the 40-man roster hurt his case for breaking camp with the team. Both pitchers could see action in the big leagues this year, with Schmidt being the team's No. 2 prospect and Garcia sitting at No. 3 at MLB Pipeline. Garcia is a little more attractive in dynasty/keeper leagues and has one of the best curveballs of minor league pitchers. The right-hander also has a fastball that ranges from 91-97 mph.

Deivi Garcia Optioned To Double-A

New York Yankees starting pitcher Deivi Garcia was optioned to Double-A on Thursday. Garcia had been competing for a rotation spot in the wake of injuries to James Paxton and Luis Severino, but struggled in three spring training starts with a 7.36 ERA. A consensus top-100 prospect, Garcia finished last season at Triple-A, where he racked up 45 strikeouts over 40 innings. Still, Garcia is just 20 years old and struggles with command (4.4 BB/9 last year), so additional minor league experience should be useful. Depending on how the MLB schedule is structured, Garcia could make his major league debut as soon as this season. Garcias strong strikeout ability should have him on the radar of all fantasy owners, but his uncertain call-up date makes him more of a factor in dynasty leagues.

Deivi Garcia Allows Two Runs Over Two Innings In Spring Debut

New York Yankees starting pitcher Deivi Garcia threw two innings against the Braves on Friday, allowing two runs on one hit and one walk while striking out three. A consensus top-100 prospect, Garcia enters 2020 with a shot to start in the Yankees rotation. With a fastball that sits in the mid-90s and a strong curveball, Garcia has struck hitters out in the minor leagues at an impressive 12.7 K/9 rate over his career so far. Garcia is battling Michael King, Jonathan Loaisiga and Jordan Montgomery for the last two spots in the rotation, and fantasy owners should take note of Garcias strikeout upside if he earns a job.
