The Washington Nationals agreed to sign free-agent infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich to an undisclosed deal on Friday. Dietrich has yet to play in the big leagues this year after hitting just .197 (12-for-61) with five home runs and eight RBI for the Texas Rangers in the shortened 2020 season. The Nationals need middle infield depth at the big league level and have been using Alcides Escobar at second recently. However, it's unclear if Dietrich will be an option in the majors right away. Even if he's in the lineup on Friday against San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb, Dietrich won't be anything more than a deep NL-only flier for depth, and he's unlikely to see regular playing time in the short term.
Free Agent second baseman Derek Dietrich has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees per Robert Murray of FanSided. He will be now become a free agent and can sign anywhere. He signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in late March after they released him but he was never called up to the big league club. He'll likely latch on to a new organization and serve as depth in the minors.
Texas Rangers infielder/designated hitter Derek Dietrich socked a three-run home run that proved to be the difference in Saturdays win over Colorado, which has earned him a spot in Sundays lineup against right-hander Jon Gray. Dietrich was signed by the Rangers earlier this week and he is off to a 4-for-7 start with his new club. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will head to the bench for the series finale, with Todd Frazier shifting over to the hot corner. With all 20 of Dietrichs home runs over the last two seasons having come against right-handed pitching -- in addition to playing at Coors Field -- he represents an excellent DFS selection for those owners who can fit him into lineups.
Rougned Odor Sits Wednesday, Derek Dietrich Makes 2020 Debut
Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor is out of the lineup Wednesday against the Mariners and right-handed pitcher Taijuan Walker due to what manager Chris Woodward deemed a mental break. Odors absence paves the way for Derek Dietrich to make his season debut, having been signed last week after being released by the Cubs. While Dietrich isnt a season-long commodity due to his lack of consistent playing time, he is a DFS candidate against righties, having mashed all 19 of his home runs from last year (.829 OPS) versus right-handed pitching. Odor is off to a freezing cold start at the dish, slashing just .116/.191/.209 across his first 12 games. His next chance to return to the lineup comes Friday at the hitters haven Coors Field against rookie righty Ryan Castellani, which could be the impetus for getting Odors bat on track.
Cincinnati Reds manager David Bell said that early reports on outfielder Derek Dietrich are very good, but "it'll take him a little longer than everyone else, but not too much." Dietrich was recently added to the team's 60-man player pool for the upcoming season, but the 30-year-old left-handed hitter batted just .187 despite hitting a career-high 19 home runs in 113 games for the Reds in 2019. Dietrich will provide a crowded Reds outfield with depth, but he's unlikely to be much of a fantasy option during the shortened 60-game season.
Cincinnati Reds second baseman Derek Dietrich was recently added to the team's 60-man player pool. He told reporters on Wednesday that he tested positive for COVID-19 earlier in the offseason, which indicates why the team left him out of their player pool at first. Dietrich mentioned that he had few symptoms and that he is in the best shape of his life. The veteran utility man will compete for playing time with Cincy after smacking 19 home runs in 2019.
The Cincinnati Reds re-signed infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich to a minor league deal with an invitation to major league spring training on Wednesday. Dietrich had a career-high 19 home runs and drove in 43 runs in 113 games for Cincinnati in 2019, but he hit just .187/.328/.462 and struck out 74 times. He's useful to the Reds and those in NL-only leagues because of his versatility on the diamond, but it could be hard for him to win a utility job in 2020 after the Reds beefed up their offense in the offseason. At best, Dietrich could be a DFS sleeper when he's in the lineup if he wins a bench job again.
Derek Dietrich Out of Lineup for First Game Against Cardinals on Sunday
After making a run of consecutive starts from August 23 - 26 for the injured Joey Votto, it looks like Reds infielder Derek Dietrich's time as a regular starter is over, as he takes a seat again for the first game of Cincinnati's doubleheader in St. Louis on Sunday. After going blowing up in the first two months of the season - hitting 17 home runs in his first 52 games - Dietrich's power has slowed to a trickle since. Dietrich now hasn't hit a home run since July 13 and has only hit two since hitting three home runs against the Pirates on May 28. Slashing .144/.327/.263 with a 66 wRC+ since hitting those three home runs, Dietrich is droppable in all formats.
The Cincinnati Reds activated second baseman/outfielder Derek Dietrich (shoulder) from the injured list on Friday. Dietrich missed 16 games with left shoulder inflammation and was 2-for-11 with two runs, two strikeouts and a hit by pitch in three rehab games. He's at first base and is hitting seventh against Pirates starter Mitch Keller in his return. Dietrich had cooled off considerably before his injury, however, so you may want to hold him out of your lineups until he proves that he's completely healthy again. On the season, the 30-year-old is hitting just .207/.349/.514 with 19 home runs and 43 RBI.
Cincinnati Reds infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich was placed on the injured list Monday with shoulder inflammation. Dietrich had only played in two of Cincinnati's previous five games. He has slumped badly since hitting 12 home runs in May and it seems unlikely he will be a contributor during the stretch run, now for multiple reasons. He can be let go pretty much everywhere at this point.
