Derek Dietrich News
The Washington Nationals agreed to sign free-agent infielder/outfielder Derek Dietrich to an undisclosed deal on Friday. Dietrich has yet to play in the big leagues this year after hitting just .197 (12-for-61) with five home runs and eight RBI for the Texas Rangers in the shortened 2020 season. The Nationals need middle infield depth at the big league level and have been using Alcides Escobar at second recently. However, it's unclear if Dietrich will be an option in the majors right away. Even if he's in the lineup on Friday against San Francisco Giants right-hander Logan Webb, Dietrich won't be anything more than a deep NL-only flier for depth, and he's unlikely to see regular playing time in the short term.
Free Agent second baseman Derek Dietrich has opted out of his contract with the New York Yankees per Robert Murray of FanSided. He will be now become a free agent and can sign anywhere. He signed a minor league contract with the Yankees in late March after they released him but he was never called up to the big league club. He'll likely latch on to a new organization and serve as depth in the minors.
Texas Rangers infielder/designated hitter Derek Dietrich socked a three-run home run that proved to be the difference in Saturdays win over Colorado, which has earned him a spot in Sundays lineup against right-hander Jon Gray. Dietrich was signed by the Rangers earlier this week and he is off to a 4-for-7 start with his new club. Isiah Kiner-Falefa will head to the bench for the series finale, with Todd Frazier shifting over to the hot corner. With all 20 of Dietrichs home runs over the last two seasons having come against right-handed pitching -- in addition to playing at Coors Field -- he represents an excellent DFS selection for those owners who can fit him into lineups.
