Free-agent left-hander Derek Holland announced on Twitter that he will be joining the Boston Red Sox this year. Holland made 39 appearances (one start) for the Detroit Tigers in 2021 and had a 5.07 ERA and 1.57 WHIP while striking out 51 and walking 20 in 49 2/3 innings. He's made just 14 starts over the last three seasons for the San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates and Tigers, and he hasn't been very effective with a 5.98 ERA and 1.50 WHIP in 174 2/3 total innings in that span in 102 total outings. The 35-year-old hasn't been on the fantasy radar for what seems like ages since the beginning of his career with the Texas Rangers. Holland will provide left-handed relief depth in Boston.
Detroit Tigers relief pitcher Derek Holland (shoulder) was reinstated from the injured list on Saturday. The 34-year-old is currently sitting on a 1-1 record and a miserable 9.60 ERA throughout 14 big league appearances this season. He has been on the shelf since June because of left shoulder inflammation, but he likely won't add much value to fantasy lineups unless he takes on a more prominent role in the rotation moving ahead. To make room for Holland, Matt Manning was optioned back to Triple-A Toledo.
Detroit Tigers pitcher Derek Holland (shoulder) began a rehab assignment with Triple-A Toledo on Tuesday. He allowed one hit and one walk while striking out three across one inning during Tuesday's rehab assignment. The southpaw has been sidelined since early June with shoulder inflammation. He owns a 9.60 ERA, 2.07 WHIP, and a 20:9 K: BB across 15 innings in 2021. Holland could return after the All-Star break but fantasy managers can leave the 34-year-old on the waiver wire.
The Detroit Tigers have placed relief pitcher Derek Holland (shoulder) on the 10-day injured list with a left shoulder strain. The team called up fellow relief pitcher Kyle Funkhouser in a corresponding move. Holland has appeared in eight games so far this year, including one start, and has struggled immensely. Over nine innings, he has allowed 16 hits and 13 earned runs while striking out nine.
Derek Holland Joins Tigers On Minor League Contract
Left-handed pitcher Derek Holland has been inked to a Minor League deal with the Detroit Tigers that carries an invitation to Major League Spring Training. Holland, a 12-year veteran, last appeared with Pittsburgh in 2020 and posted a 6.86 ERA over 12 appearances (five starts). After spending eight years with the Rangers to open his career, Holland has bounced around considerably, appearing in the bigs with four teams over the past four years, both as a starter and reliever. With the Tigers having multiple spots open for competition on their pitching staff, it's within the realm of possibility that Holland could begin the year in the rotation. Even if that's the case, fantasy managers will need to see him string together some solid outings before adding him off of the waiver wire.
The Pittsburgh Pirates signed pitcher Derek Holland to a minor league deal on Friday, according to an industry source. He'll receive an invite to spring training and can opt out of his deal if he's not on the Opening Day roster. Holland made 51 relief appearances for the Cubs and Giants in 2019, posting an ugly 6.08 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 8.8 K/9. The 33-year-old southpaw also made eight starts last season and has 222 career starts, so he'll be an option as a swingman for a Bucs rotation that has some question marks at the back end. There's potential for Holland to be a deep league or DFS streamer if he wins a rotation spot in Pittsburgh, but there's not a whole lot of upside here.
Cubs Pick Up Jose Quintana's Option, Decline Derek Holland's
The Chicago Cubs picked up starting pitcher Jose Quintana's 2020 option on Saturday and declined pitcher Derek Holland's, making him a free agent. Quintana was 13-9 in 2019 but with a 4.68 ERA in 32 outings. He's gone 33-23 with a 4.23 ERA in 78 outings for the Cubs since being acquired from the White Sox in July of 2017. Holland was 0-1 with a 6.89 ERA in 20 games for the Cubs last year after coming over from the Giants on July 26. Quintana just doesn't have much fantasy upside in his left arm because of his inability to avoid contact on a regular basis. He can be useful in deep leagues for rotation depth and wins, but not much more.
The Chicago Cubs have acquired veteran pitcher Derek Holland from the San Francisco Giants for cash considerations. Holland has struggled this season as both a starter and reliever and was designated for assignment by the Giants last week. Holland has fared well versus lefties and that has been an issue for the Cubs bullpen this year, but he is unlikely to have much fantasy value. Reliever Tim Collins was designated for assignment to make room for Holland.
Derek Holland Hammered In Return From Injured List
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Derek Holland (finger) made his first start since coming off the 10-day injured list, allowing seven earned runs, seven hits and four walks with two strikeouts in just 2 2/3 innings in a no-decision against the Colorado Rockies on Thursday. He had his start postponed on Wednesday, and he probably wishes the snow was more intense in this one, too. He threw just 46 of his 73 pitches, and his velocity was fine, but he hung three balls over the dish and the Rockies made him pay with three homers. Rust was to be expected. He'll try and rebound Tuesday night against the visiting Toronto Blue Jays.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Derek Holland (finger) has been activated off the 10-day injured list on Wednesday. Holland has been out since April 27 due to a bone bruise in his left index finger. His 5.34 ERA isn't encouraging to fantasy owners and pitching in Coors Field on Wednesday isn't going to help. Go ahead and avoid Holland at all costs.
