Newly-acquired infielder Eddy Alvarez is in the New York Mets' lineup for Tuesday's game at the Toronto Blue Jays and will bat ninth as he faces Blue Jays starter Chris Bassitt. The infielder/outfielder was traded by the Boston Red Sox for cash considerations on Monday and was added to the active roster before Monday's game, where he scored as a pinch-runner. Alvarez was hitting .247/.348/.463 with 18 homers, 77 RBI, 73 runs scored, and 18 stolen bases for Triple-A Worcester, offering enough pop for fantasy managers in deeper leagues to consider while making for a low-end option in daily fantasy play.
The Milwaukee Brewers signed infielder Eddy Alvarez to a minor-league deal on Saturday that includes an invite to major-league spring training next year. Alvarez medaled in the 2014 Olympics for the United States as a short-track speed skater and in baseball in the 2020 Olympics for Team USA. The 32-year-old left-handed-hitting infielder played in 14 games with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2022, going 4-for-25 (.160) with no homers, three RBI, a run scored, three RBI and nine strikeouts in his 27 plate appearances. He'll give the Brewers some infield versatility as minor-league depth in 2023. Alvarez has hit .183/.262/.262 with a homer, 11 RBI, 15 runs scored and four stolen bases in 50 major-league games in three seasons.
Miami Marlins rookie second baseman Eddy Alvarez had a strong game on Sunday, going 3-for-4 with a double and two singles. Alvarez has been playing excellent defense, but had struggled with the bat until this one. The former Olympic speed skater is hitting .231 with a .538 OPS. He'll help the Marlins a lot more on the field than he'll help anyone's fantasy team, but he's still a very fun story to follow.
