The Chicago Cubs have activated infielder Matt Duffy from the 60-day injured list on Friday. Duffy was sidelined since May 22 with a lower back strain. Duffy was having a solid season before his injury and has hit .278 with one home run, 12 RBI and three stolen bases. With infielder/outfielder Kris Bryant likely to be dealt and Joc Pederson recently dealt, Duffy should get a good amount of at-bats and will bat fifth on Friday. To make room for Duffy, the Cubs have designated infielder Eric Sogard for assignment. Sogard was hitting .249 with one home run, 12 RBI and three stolen bases this season and is likely to latch on with as organizational depth for another club. Both Sogard and Duffy can remain on the waiver wire.
Chicago Cubs infielder Eric Sogard (thumb) has been placed on the 10-day injured list with a left thumb contusion. Sogard has been operating as a backup infielder for the Cubs and has also made five appearances as a relief pitcher. Sogard hasn't done much this season with his bat and is hitting .250 with one home run and 11 RBI. Even when healthy, Sogard should be on the waiver wire. Sogard will be replaced on the roster by infielder Sergio Alcantara. Alcantara will operate in a similar role as Sogard was for the Cubs and can be avoided in all formats for now.
Chicago Cubs second baseman Eric Sogard went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Tuesday's loss versus the Cleveland Indians. The veteran took Shane Bieber deep in the top of the fifth inning for his first home run of the season. Sogard has been on the wrong side of a platoon with David Bote at second base and is about to lose more playing with infielder Nico Hoerner (forearm) aiming to return this weekend. Sogard is now hitting .268 with one home run and six RBI. He can safely be left on the waiver wire.
Chicago Cubs second baseman Eric Sogard went 3-for-4 with a run scored and three singles in Saturday's loss to the Milwaukee Brewers. Sogard had been platooning with second baseman David Bote, but he is a favorite of manager David Ross and he could see more at-bats with outfielder Joc Pederson (wrist) on the 10-day injured list. The veteran is now hitting .257 with no home runs and four RBI. Sogard is a pure contact hitter and doesn't offer much else to be excited about. He should be left on the waiver wire in all formats.
Chicago Cubs second baseman Eric Sogard went 2-for-3 with a walk and one RBI on Tuesday versus the New York Mets. Sogard had two of the Cubs four hits on the evening and came through in the bottom of the fourth inning to knock in outfielder Jason Heyward from second to give the Cubs the lead and continue a rally with two outs in the inning. Sogard was a late addition to the lineup when second baseman David Bote (illness) was scratched with an upset stomach. Sogard has been platooning with Bote and will also have to compete with prospect Nico Hoerner in the near future. Sogard is a good contact hitter and his best value is in DFS leagues.
Free-agent utility manEric Sogard has signed a one-year deal with the Chicago Cubs on Wednesday. Sogard was linked to a few teams, including the Twins, but he'll sign on with the Cubs as a non-roster invitee after the Brewers declined his $4.5 million option for 2021. The 34-year-old had a down year last season after slashing .290/.353/.457 with 13 homers and eight stolen bases in 110 games in 2019. Sogard is more of a depth signing at this point, considering the Cubs already have Ian Happ, who can fill the jack-of-all-trades role.
Brewers Decline Options On Jedd Gyorko, Eric Sogard, Ben Gamel
The Milwaukee Brewers declined the 2021 options on infielders Jedd Gyorko and Eric Sogard and outfielder Ben Gamel on Friday. Gyorko and Sogard both had $4.5 million options, while Gamel remains under team control after the team declined his $2.55 million option. Gyorko hit .248 with nine home runs and 17 RBI in 43 games and 117 at-bats this year, and his .838 OPS was the highest on the team while playing mostly against left-handed pitchers. He eventually became the team's primary first baseman. Sogard hit just .209 with a homer, 10 RBI and a .560 OPS in 44 games. Gamel had a .237 average with three home runs, 10 RBI and a .718 OPS in 40 games. The trio aren't likely to be anything more than utility options going forward, limiting their fantasy value significantly.
Milwaukee Brewers infielder Eric Sogard is leading off and playing shortstop in the team's Sunday matchup versus Reds righty Sonny Gray. The veteran has frequently been used in the leadoff spot for the team this season, and with Lorenzo Cain opting out this year, he'll likely remain to get most of his starts there. Sogard has hit a modest .250 so far, but has impressed with a .400 OBP thanks to a 17.5% walk rate and 10.0% K-rate. It's a tough matchup versus Gray who's been lights-out this season, but Sogard is generating season-long fantasy value in deeper formats with regular playing time.
The Milwaukee Brewers have agreed to sign infielder Eric Sogard to a one-year contract. The contract reportedly may contain an option for the 2021 season, but specific terms are yet to be disclosed. Sogard had a strong 2019 season for the Blue Jays and Rays, slashing .290/.353/.457 while playing multiple infield positions. He's one of the better utility guys to have around and should get plenty of playing time as long as he keeps hitting.
Eric Sogard On Roster, Jesus Aguilar, Nathaniel Lowe Left Off
Tampa Bay Rays second baseman Eric Sogard (foot) has made the roster for the American League Division Series against the Astros, while first baseman Jesus Aguilar and infielder Nathaniel Lowe weren't included. Sogard hasn't played since Sept. 15 and isn't in the starting lineup for Game 1 on Friday, but he'll provide a valuable bat and glove off the bench and could see some starts in this series. The 33-year-old hit an impressive .290/.353/.457 with 13 homers, 59 runs, 40 RBI and eight steals in 396 at-bats with the Blue Jays and Rays this year.
