Astros Ink Veteran Reliever Fernando Rodney To Deal
Right-handed reliever Fernando Rodney is attempting to make it back into the Major Leagues, this time as a member of the Houston Astros, who have assigned him to their alternate training site after signing him to a contract. At 43 years old, should Rodney make the Astros bullpen, he would appear for his 12th different big league club. After splitting 2019 between the Oakland As and Washington Nationals and producing a 5.66 ERA and poor 13.3% walk rate in 47.2 innings, Rodney doesnt figure to be a season-long fantasy contributor barring significant blows to the current Houston bullpen hierarchy.
Four teams have checked in on relief pitcher Fernando Rodney. His overall numbers in 2019 don't look good (5.66 ERA, 1.62 WHIP, 5.3 BB/9), but most of the damage against him came in his 17 relief outings with the A's. Rodney actually pitched much better with the Nationals (4.05 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, two saves) in 38 outings and helped them on their World Series run. The 42-year-old will likely have to settle for a minor league deal somewhere, though, and he's highly unlikely to land somewhere that will give him the outright closing job in the ninth inning.
Washington Nationals relief pitcher Fernando Rodney has been recalled from the minors on Monday. Rodney is expected to join the team prior to Tuesday's game against the Miami Marlins. He was released by the Oakland Athletics after posting a 9.42 ERA in 17 relief appearances. The Nationals are desperate for relief help, but Rodney hasn't done much to make him a valuable asset. He belongs on the waiver wire until he can prove his value.
The Oakland Athletics released veteran relief pitcher Fernando Rodney on Tuesday just two days after designating him for assignment. Manager Bob Melvin admitted that the team hadn't been using him as frequently as the veteran is accustomed, but the way Rodney has pitched (9.42 ERA, .345 opponent batting average) in 17 relief appearances, there wasn't much reason to use him. Rodney's velocity is still topping out in the low-90's, and it's likely he'll latch on with another organization. For now, his fantasy appeal is rather negligible.
The Oakland Athletics designated relief pitcher Fernando Rodney for assignment over the weekend, and they have seven days within the transaction to either trade or place him on irrevocable outright waivers. It just wasn't working this season for the veteran, who had a 9.42 ERA with opponents hitting .345 against him in 17 relief appearances. Manager Bob Melvin has gotten away from him over the past month. "Obviously some performance comes into play," Melvin said. "I will say that he's not used to pitching in a role like that. He's used to getting regular work, and we were not giving that to him." He is the current oldest player in the majors at 42, but his fastball was still clocked at 95-96 mph. He might latch on with another organization, but his days as a fantasy option are over.
Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Fernando Rodney coughed up four earned runs, three hits and a walk while retiring just one batter in a blown save and relief loss against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Sunday. Rodney was staked to a 3-1 lead in the top of the 13th inning, but he couldn't hold the lead. The big blow was a three-run home run by Starling Marte, who walked it off and sent the fans home happy. Rodney is 0-2 with an 8.78 ERA and 1.95 WHIP on the season. As such, the 42-year-old veteran right-hander isn't a recommended fantasy option in most formats right now.
Oakland Athletics relief pitcher Fernando Rodney, 42, is the only active player left born in the 1970's now that Ichiro Suzuki is officially retired and with Bartolo Colon unable to find a team. Rodney saved 25 games for the Minnesota Twins last year before being traded to Oakland in August, where he took on a setup role. Rodney has begun this season with two walks and one strikeout in 1 2/3 innings. Blake Treinen is completely secure as the Athletics' closer, relegating Rodney to waiver wires across fantasy baseball.
The Oakland Athletics exercised relief pitcher Fernando Rodney's $4.25 million option for the 2019 season on Wednesday. Rodney had a 3.36 ERA, 1.46 WHIP and 70 K's in 64 1/3 innings over 68 outings in 2018. All 25 of his saves came with the Twins before being traded to Oakland at the trade deadline. Walks (5.7 per nine innings) continue to be Rodney's weakness. He is a shaky fantasy option when he's closing games regularly, which makes him avoidable as a setup man.
The Oakland Athletics acquired relief pitcher Fernando Rodney from the Twins on Thursday in exchange for minor league right-hander Dakota Chalmers. Rodney has a 3.09 ERA and 25 saves on the season in 46 appearances for Minnesota. The trade saps basically all of the veteran's fantasy value, though, as he'll pitch in a setup role with his new team. Blake Treinen remains the closer, and the A's also have traded for Jeurys Familia and picked up Shawn Kelley recently to bolster their 'pen. Chalmers is a 21-year-old who has appeared in just two games (one start) for Single-A Beloit in 2018. Those who are in need of saves need to immediately pick up Addison Reed, as he should now be in the closer role in Minnesota.
Minnesota Twins closer Fernando Rodney preserved his team's 6-5 win on Sunday by pitching a scoreless ninth inning and earning his 24th save (he got his 23rd on August 3 against the Royals as well). He did allow two hits and walked a batter, but was able to escape scot-free. With Rodney there will almost always be drama, but at 41-years-old he's still proving his worth. The Twins are nine games behind the Cleveland Indians for the American League Central lead so technically they're still alive in the playoff hunt. That said, they will need Rodney who allowed 15 hits in 12 1/3 innings pitched in July to continue to limit the damage.
