Former Texas Rangers pitcher Greg Holland cleared waivers and declined an outright assignment to become a free agent Thursday. He was designated for assignment Tuesday by the Rangers and will now look to latch onto another team. The 36-year-old signed a minor-league deal with Texas during the offseason and made the team's Opening Day roster. He struggled mightily this season, posting a 7.71 ERA, 1.50 WHIP, and 5:1 K: BB over 4 2/3 innings. Holland should draw interest from teams searching for bullpen help but won't have any fantasy value unless he's in consideration for saves chances with his new team.
Texas Rangers relief pitcher Greg Holland and outfielder Eli White have been informed by manager Chris Woodward that they have made the team. Meanwhile, relief pitcher Spencer Patton was optioned and outfielder Jake Marisnick was released by the team. Holland is the most notable player here. Joe Barlow has been heralded as the favorite for saves in Texas, but Holland significantly outperformed him this spring and we all know the 36-year-old has far more experience in a closing roll in the majors. Fantasy managers in leagues where saves are scarce and highly coveted may want to speculatively add Holland in case he opens the year as the team's primary closer.
Relief pitcher Greg Holland has signed a minor league contract with the Texas Rangers. The team has also invited the veteran pitcher to Spring Training with the major league squad. The 36-year-old Holland spent the last two seasons with the Kansas City Royals. He looked rejuvenated in 2020, when he had a 1.91 ERA and a 0.95 WHIP over 28.1 innings. However, last year he struggled immensely to the tune of a 4.85 ERA and a 1.35 WHIP. He'll have some work to do in order to earn some high-leverage innings with his new squad.
Kansas City Royals reliever Greg Holland (shoulder) has been placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder impingement syndrome. It's unclear how long his stint will be. Holland has struggled this season out of the Royals bullpen with a 5.79 ERA in 46.2 innings but does have seven saves and eight holds. He's been especially shaky lately, allowing nine runs in his last three innings. Fantasy managers rostering Holland should feel comfortable dropping him in favor of a better pitcher, as when he returns it's unlikely that he will pitch in high leverage roles.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland received yet another save opportunity on Saturday against the Detroit Tigers, but he was unable to convert it. He entered the game in the ninth inning while the team was winning 9-6. He pitched 2/3 of an inning and allowed two hits, two walks and two earned runs before being pulled. Wade Davis came in to record the final out and earn the save. Holland earned saves in two of the team's previous three games before Saturday, but he's been shaky overall on the mound this month. He's now allowed eight earned runs over 8.1 innings in July. Holland should still be considered the favorite for saves in Kansas City for now, but Scott Barlow is very much in the picture and Davis might be now as well.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland closed out Friday's 5-3 win over the Detroit Tigers to earn his seventh save of the year. Holland pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing no hits and no walks while striking out two. The Royals have now won three consecutive games. Holland has saved two of them while Scott Barlow saved the other. Barlow was used in the eighth inning of Friday's game. Holland has a 4.62 ERA and a 1.38 WHIP over 41 appearances this year. He's the primary closer for the team for now, but don't be surprised if Barlow continues to get some save opportunities here and there.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland closed out the team's 5-2 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday to earn his sixth save of the year. He pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out two. This was the team's first save since the first week of July, when Scott Barlow recorded two straight saves. Barlow was used in the eighth inning in Tuesday's game. Holland has had a rough time on the mound over the past few months. He converted two of his four save opportunities in June and he has an 8.10 ERA over 6.2 innings in July. We'll likely see both Barlow and Holland earn save opportunities going forward, which of course isn't great news for fantasy purposes.
Greg Holland Charged With His Fourth Loss Against Indians
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland was the victim of the Cleveland Indians' come-from-behind victory over the Royals on Thursday. Holland entered in the ninth inning while the game was tied 4-4. He went on to give up a walk-off three-run home run to Franmil Reyes. In total, he pitched 2/3 of an inning, allowing two hits, a walk and three earned runs. Holland has allowed at least one earned run in each of his last three appearances now. The Royals bullpen has struggled as a whole over the past week. Scott Barlow, who converted the team's last two saves, was shelled in a setup role on both Wednesday and Thursday. Holland should be considered the favorite for save opportunities going forward, but the 36-51 Royals have been far from a reliable source of saves all year.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland closed out Tuesday's 6-5 win over the New York Yankees to record his fifth save of the year. Holland pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing one hit and one walk while striking out two. He has now closed out each of the team's last three wins, two of which were save opportunities. While things could certainly change on a dime in Kansas City, Holland is the clear closer for the team at least for now and he should be rostered in all fantasy leagues.
Kansas City Royals relief pitcher Greg Holland was called upon to close out the team's 7-3 win over the Boston Red Sox on Sunday. Holland pitched a perfect ninth inning, allowing no hits or walks. He has now closed out each of the team's last two wins, the team's only two wins since June 10. Things have been very fluid in the Royals' bullpen this year, but Holland looks to be the clear closer at least for now. He has four saves on the year and he's been the only Royal to earn a save since Scott Barlow converted one on June 3. Holland should be added in all fantasy leagues and he should remain on rosters as long as he continues to be the primary closer for the team.
