Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma will head back to Japan to continue his playing career. Iwakuma had not pitched at all in 2018 and last pitched in the major leagues in May of 2017 due to right shoulder issues. He obviously wasn't anywhere close to the fantasy radar this season.
Hisashi Iwakuma's Live Batting Practice Session Delayed
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma will have his scheduled live batting practice session delayed one day to Wednesday due to a sore neck. This will delay the next step in his recovery from shoulder inflammation dating back to May 2017. Iwakuma will likely be out for a while, as there is no clear timetable for his recovery. Iwakuma hasn't pitched in an MLB game since early last season and shouldn't be owned in any fantasy formats due to his inability to stay healthy.
Seattle Mariners starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma has been shut down after feeling soreness in his right shoulder over the weekend, per MLB.com. Iwakuma's simulated game on Saturday lasted only seven or eight pitches before his shoulder began barking and the outing was scrapped. Iwakuma had offseason shoulder surgery on his pitching shoulder after failing to get himself healthy enough to get off the disabled list in 2017. He went only 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA last season after posting a 63-39 record and a 3.42 ERA over 136 starts from 2012-16. Iwakuma will back off and try and ramp it up again and if he can contribute anything to the major league roster this season, that would be a bonus. Sadly, Iwakuma is looking less and less likely he will see the field in 2018.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma(shoulder) will throw another bullpen session Tuesday, per MLB.com. The next step would be to advance to throwing to live hitters with possible rehab starts at Triple-A Tacoma in the near future. It has been a slow, arduous rehab process for the starter who signed a minor league deal in the offseason following shoulder surgery. If Iwakuma can provide anything for the big league club in 2018, it would be a plus for a pitcher who has had shoulder issues for the past year.
Hisashi Iwakuma To Throw Bullpen Session This Weekend
Seattle Mariners injured starter Hisashi Iwakuma(shoulder) will throw a bullpen session this weekend, per MLB.com. Iwakuma is recovering from shoulder surgery and missed most of last season. If the session goes well, Iwakuma is expected to pitch for the Mariners Triple-A team and begin his own version of spring training. Getting any kind of production from Iwakuma this season would be a plus for the Mariners, so they will be cautious in evaluating his return to the big leagues. You can leave the Japanese hurler on the waiver wire in most leagues for now.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma has begun to throw some pitches off the mound, per MLB.com. Manager Scott Servais hopes to have the starter back at some point this season, but Iwakuma is a long way from returning from shoulder surgery. For now, any news is good news for the right-hander who struggled with shoulder problems that completely derailed his 2017 season. At his peak, he was a solid number three or four starter, but it is hard to predict what to expect if he makes it back to the mound in 2018.
Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma (shoulder) has been cleared to begin throwing. Iwakuma made just six starts last season before undergoing an arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right shoulder in September. Mariners general manager Jerry Dipoto said last month that he does not expect the veteran right-hander to be game-ready until sometime around late May or early June. Seattle re-signed Iwakuma to a minor league contract this winter.
Mariners Bring Back Hisashi Iwakuma On Minor League Deal
The Seattle Mariners re-signed starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma to a minor league deal with an invite to spring training Monday. The 2017 season was a lost one for the 36-year-old veteran, as he made just six starts because of right shoulder problems. He required surgery in September and isn't even a lock to be ready for the regular season in 2018. Iwakuma wasn't much of a fantasy option to begin with because of his lack of strikeouts, and he's no guarantee to be in Seattle's starting rotation at any point.
Seattle Mariners free-agent starting pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma said the team has offered him an opportunity to return in 2018. Iwakuma, 36, made just six starts last season due to shoulder issues and went 0-2 with a 4.35 ERA, 16 strikeouts and 12 walks, so he's unlikely to receive anything more than a minor league deal loaded with incentives. The veteran right-hander also wound up having shoulder surgery in late September, although he hopes to be ready to pitch next season. Given Iwakuma's age, lack of strikeout potential and extensive injury history, he's nowhere near the fantasy radar in 2018.
Hisashi Iwakuma, Yovani Gallardo Become Free Agents
The Seattle Mariners announced Thursday that they declined the 2018 option on starting pitchers Hisashi Iwakuma and Yovani Gallardo. Both pitchers have severely declined. Iwakuma made only six starts in 2017 due to a shoulder injury that required surgery late in the year. He'll likely only land a minor league deal next year, and he'll turn 37 years old next April. Gallardo was much more useful for Seattle this year, making 22 starts. However, he was largely ineffective with a 5.72 ERA and 1.52 WHIP in 130 2/3 innings. Neither will be a viable fantasy option in 2018 no matter where they land.
