Jarrod Dyson News
The Toronto Blue Jays claimed outfielder Jarrod Dyson off waivers from the Kansas City Royals on Friday, according to sources. Dyson isn't an everyday player and has only been useful in much deeper leagues because of his speed (eight stolen bases this year). He's never been much of a hitter, has very little pop (21 career home runs in 12 MLB seasons) and is hitting just .221/.256/.311 with no homers and 10 RBI in his 77 games in 2021 with the Royals. Dyson may get a start here or there, but he will mostly serve as bench depth and as a late-inning pinch-running option for Toronto the rest of the year.
The Kansas City Royals signed free-agent outfielder Jarrod Dyson to a one-year, $1.5 million deal on Tuesday. The 36-year-old spent his first seven MLB seasons with the Royals, hitting .260 with a .325 on-base percentage and 176 stolen bases in 550 games. He also scored the World Series-clinching run in extra innings against the Mets in 2015. Dyson appeared in 32 games for the Pittsburgh Pirates and Chicago White Sox in the shortened 2020 season, hitting .180/.231/.180 with no homers, five RBI and six stolen bases in 66 plate appearances. The 36-year-old is expected to provide veteran leadership for a rebuilding KC club while also likely serving as the team's fourth outfielder behind Andrew Benintendi, Michael A. Taylor and Whit Merrifield. He can also provide some speed off the bench in a pinch.
The Chicago White Sox have acquired outfielder Jarrod Dyson from the Pirates for a international bonus pool slot. The speedy outfielder is hitting a weak .157 with four stolen bases on the season. Dyson is likely to be utilized as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement with his new club and can be avoided in all formats.
