John Schreiber Earns Second Save Of Season

Kansas City Royals relief pitcher John Schreiber picked up his second save of the season in Monday's 5-3 win over the Angels. Schreiber entered the game to pitch the top of the ninth inning up by two. He allowed a leadoff single, induced a groundball double play, and ended the game on a line-out. The Royals have only seen four save opportunities in the last 15 days, with half of them going to Lucas Erceg. Erceg pitched 1 2/3 innings in Sunday's game, so Schreiber got the call in the ninth on Monday. The 30-year-old now owns a 4.02 ERA with two of five save opportunities converted, a 7.11 K/9 rate, and a 3.08 BB/9 rate. Erceg still seems like the arm to roster for fantasy managers unless Schreiber continues to see high-leverage situations.

Royals Acquire John Schreiber From Red Sox

The Kansas City Royals acquired right-handed reliever John Schreiber from the Boston Red Sox on Saturday in exchange for minor-league right-hander David Sandlin, according to sources. Schreiber, 29, missed almost two months in 2023 due to a shoulder strain and finished the year with a 3.86 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, one save, 25 walks and 53 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings over 46 outings (two starts) in Boston. For a weak KC bullpen, he'll immediately become one of their better relievers and should work in high-leverage situations, making him an option in deep holds leagues while seeing an occasional save chance as well. Sandlin, 22, has some intriguing strikeout potential after fanning 88 hitters in 66 2/3 innings at Single-A and High-A in the Royals organization last year.

Red Sox Willing To Listen To Offers For Chris Martin, John Schreiber

While the Boston Red Sox have been in trade talks for closer Kenley Jansen this off-season, they are also reportedly willing to listen to offers for setup men Chris Martin and John Schreiber. Martin had an excellent 2023 season but is due $9.5 million in 2024, so a potential trade would seemingly be for monetary reasons. Schreiber's salary is not as taxing and he will not be a free agent until after the 2026 season, so the impetus to trade him may be to potentially clear roster space. Both pitchers posted strong peripherals with notable holds numbers, so they could be fantasy-relevant in deeper saves-plus-holds leagues in 2024, regardless of what teams they play on.

John Schreiber Arrives At Camp Early

Boston Red Sox right-hander John Schreiber (shoulder) has arrived to the team's spring training facilities in Fort Myers, Fla., early and has been working out since Jan. 11. The 29-year-old reliever says he's "fully healthy" after miss almost two months last season due to a shoulder strain. In his third year with Boston in 2023, Schreiber had a 3.86 ERA (4.52 FIP), a 1.41 WHIP, one save, 25 walks and 53 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings over 46 appearances (two starts). He'll have a chance to again pitch in high-leverage situations in the back end of Boston's bullpen, especially if the team trades Kenley Jansen before the start of the season, but Schreiber will only be fantasy relevant in deep leagues that reward points for holds. He had a career-high eight saves for the Red Sox in 2022.

John Schreiber Starting For Boston On Saturday

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher John Schreiber is starting on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays. The 29-year-old right-hander will serve as the opener before likely giving way to Nick Pivetta. Boston has decided to give their regular starters some rest this weekend as Brayan Bello, who was slated to start Sunday, had his start pushed to Monday. Schreiber owns a 3.74 ERA, 1.43 WHIP, and 24:10 K/BB ratio over 21 2/3 innings (22 appearances) on the year.

John Schreiber Expected To Return Sunday

Boston Red Sox right-hander John Schreiber (shoulder) made another minor-league rehab appearance on Sunday for Triple-A Worcester, and manager Alex Cora said he will work on back-to-back days in the minors, most likely on Wednesday and Thursday. Schreiber is expected to return from the injured list on Sunday against the New York Mets or next Tuesday against the Atlanta Braves. He's been one of the team's best setup relievers the last two seasons, so getting him back will be a big boost to Boston's bullpen. The 29-year-old had his first eight big-league saves in 2022 and was sporting a career-low 2.12 ERA (3.17 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, eight walks and 21 strikeouts in 17 relief innings before his injury this year.

John Schreiber Could Return In Late July

Boston Red Sox right-hander John Schreiber (shoulder), one of the team's top setup men this year, could return from the injured list by late July. Schreiber began a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Worcester on July 7, recording two outs while allowing a walk and no runs. He was scheduled to make another rehab appearances on July 9 and will make multiple appearances in the minors following the All-Star break this week. Boston is hoping Schreiber can return when the New York Mets are in town from July 21-23. The 29-year-old reliever has been solid for the BoSox so far in 2023, posting a 2.12 ERA (3.16 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, eight walks and 21 strikeouts in 17 relief innings.

John Schreiber Moved To 60-Day Injured List

The Boston Red Sox transferred right-hander John Schreiber (lat) to the 60-day injured list on Thursday, according to MLB.com. Now, the earliest the 29-year-old could return is during the first series after the All-Star break against the Chicago Cubs. Schreiber suffered a right-lat strain on May 15 and hasn't pitched since. Before the ailment, he was enjoying a successful season, pitching to a 2.12 ERA, 1.29 WHIP, and 30.0% strikeout rate with six holds over 17 innings. Fantasy managers can expect Chris Martin and Josh Winckowski to continue pitching in set-up roles until Schreiber returns.

John Schreiber Goes On Injured List, Justin Garza Called Up

The Boston Red Sox placed right-hander John Schreiber (lat) on the 15-day injured list on Tuesday and also optioned pitcher Brennan Bernardino to Triple-A Worcester. In other moves, the Red Sox recalled right-hander Justin Garza and selected left-hander Ryan Sherriff's contract from Worcester. Schreiber, who has been great in relief for the team this year, goes on the shelf after suffering a right-lat strain on Monday against the Seattle Mariners. The 29-year-old has posted a 2.12 ERA (3.19 FIP), 1.29 WHIP, eight walks and 21 K's in 17 relief innings. Garza hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2021 and had a 3.95 ERA, 1.24 WHIP, two saves and 13 strikeouts in 13 2/3 relief innings for two minor-league teams. He was claimed off waivers from the Los Angeles Angels last month.

John Schreiber Likely Heading To Injured List

Boston Red Sox relief pitcher John Schreiber (lat) will likely be placed on the injured list Tuesday after leaving Monday's 10-1 loss to the Mariners with right-lat tightness, manager Alex Cora said. Schreiber had been dealing with discomfort in the area of his lat and aggravated it while pitching in the seventh inning before exiting. The team is hopeful that the IL stint will only last 15 days. The 29-year-old has pitched well in a setup role this season, compiling a 2.12 ERA with 21 strikeouts, eight walks, and six holds in 17 innings pitched.
