Miami Marlins relief pitcher JT Chargois was tasked with closing down the game versus the Los Angeles Angels on Sunday. Normally, right-hander Dylan Floro is the closer in Miami, but he was unavailable after pitching in three straight contests. Chargois was able to hold the two-run lead, but he didn't make it look pretty. Chargois gave up a leadoff single that was quickly erased on a double play. After that, Chargois walked the next batter and gave up a double to Hunter Renfroe. Then, Mike Trout came to the plate with the tying runs in scoring position. Somehow, Chargois was able to escape the inning without any damage and earn his first career save. Fantasy managers shouldn't expect Chargois to get many save chances with Floro healthy.
The Miami Marlins acquired relief pitcher JT Chargois in a trade with the Tampa Bay Rays on Tuesday. The Marlins dealt right-handed pitching prospects Marcus Johnson and Santiago Suarez to the Rays for Chargois and infielder Xavier Edwards. The 31-year-old pitched to a 2.42 ERA and a 4.28 FIP in 22.1 innings for the American League East club last season, striking out 17 batters compared to five walks allowed. He also posted the holds and a pair of pitcher wins. He'll give the Marlins another late-inning relief option alongside the likes of Dylan Floro, Tanner Scott, Tommy Nance, and Richard Bleier.
The Tampa Bay Rays placed relief pitcher JT Chargois (oblique) on the injured list on Tuesday due to left oblique tightness. Acquired as part of the Diego Castillo trade last July, Chargois pitched to a 2.52 ERA and a 3.86 ERA in 53.2 combined innings between the Rays and Seattle Mariners last season, turning in 53 strikeouts and 15 holds in the process while walking 20 batters. So far in 2022, he'd made one appearance, recording two outs, one of which was a strikeout. Starting pitcher Luis Patino was also placed on the injured list on Tuesday. Right-handers Tommy Romero and Ralph Garza Jr. were recalled from the minors.
Los Angeles Dodgers reliever J.T. Chargois provided one of the few bright spots for the team during their 1-0 Opening Day loss to the Giants. The former Twin, who was claimed off of waivers after missing the entire 2017 season, retired the top of the Giants order on just 12 pitches, striking out two. Ten of those pitches were strikes. Chargois has always had stellar numbers in the minors (10.6 K/9 in 2016 at Double-A and Triple-A), but he has yet to translate that success to the majors. His injuries have limited him, but if he's healthy, the Dodgers may have found the perfect bridge (if not heir) to closerKenley Jansen. If manager Dave Roberts keeps bringing in Chargois in the later innings, he's a great source of holds and should help your ratios.
