White Sox
The Chicago White Sox announced on Friday that they have signed former New York Mets first-round pic, right-hander Justin Dunn, to a minor-league deal. Dunn will receive a non-roster invite to major-league spring training. A right-shoulder injury kept Dunn from pitching at all during the 2024 season, and he hasn't appeared in the big leagues since 2022, when he allowed 21 earned runs while walking 17 and striking out 21 in seven starts (31 innings) with the Cincinnati Reds. The 29-year-old threw only 3 1/3 innings while rehabbing his shoulder injury in 2023. The White Sox are taking a chance on the former first-rounder with a high draft pedigree, but he's posted a 4.44 ERA (6.23 FIP) and 1.41 WHIP in 133 2/3 big-league innings over 32 starts with a 113:86 K:BB since debuting with the Seattle Mariners in 2019. Dunn is going to need to show better command of his pitches.

Justin Dunn Becomes A Free Agent
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Justin Dunn (shoulder) has chosen free agency after recently being removed from the team's 40-man roster. Dunn will have to prove he's healthy to get another shot with a new organization after he missed all of the 2023 season due to a shoulder injury that required surgery to fix a torn anterior capsule in his right arm. The 28-year-old made seven starts for the Reds in 2022 and had a 6.10 ERA (8.31 FIP), 1.58 WHIP and 21 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched. In his four years in the big leagues (three with the Seattle Mariners), he has a 4.44 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, 86 walks and 113 strikeouts over 133 2/3 innings and 32 starts. Dunn will likely miss a good chunk of the 2024 season as he rehabs from his shoulder injury.

Reds Outright Justin Dunn, Four Other Pitchers
Cincinnati Reds right-handers Justin Dunn (shoulder), Alan Busenitz, Vladimir Gutierrez (elbow), Brett Kennedy and Connor Overton (elbow) cleared waivers on Monday and were outrighted to Triple-A Louisville. Dunn missed the entire 2023 season with a shoulder injury that needed surgery in September. Busenitz resurfaced in the big leagues for the first time since 2018 this year and had a nice 2.57 ERA in just seven innings of relief. Gutierrez didn't pitch at all in 2023 after having a setback while returning from Tommy John surgery. Kennedy wasn't effective in five outings (two starts) for Cincy, giving up 13 earned runs in 18 innings. Overton allowed 14 earned runs in 11 innings over three starts before having Tommy John surgery in May.

Justin Dunn Throws Side Session
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Justin Dunn (shoulder) threw a side session on Tuesday that manager David Bell said went well. Dunn has been targeted to have his first live batting practice session against hitters on Aug. 8, with a minor-league rehab assignment expected by Aug. 19. He has endured shoulder issues in each of the past two seasons and has been sidelined since spring training because of soreness in the subscapularis muscle in his right rotator cuff. There's a chance that the 27-year-old starter will be back with the Reds in the final month of the regular season in September, but fantasy managers in deeper leagues shouldn't get their hopes up. Dunn made seven starts for Cincy in 2022 and had a 6.10 ERA (8.31 FIP) and 1.58 WHIP in 31 innings.

Justin Dunn Shut Down For A Couple Months
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Justin Dunn (shoulder) was examined in New York and will be shut down for a couple of months after being diagnosed with inflammation in the subscapularis in his right rotator cuff. The good news for Dunn is that surgery wasn't recommended, and there's still a possibility that he could pitch in 2023. Fantasy managers should be avoided the 27-year-old everywhere to begin the season. He only made seven starts for the Reds last year and struggled to the tune of a 6.10 ERA (8.31 FIP), 1.58 WHIP and career-low 15.2 percent strikeout rate in only 31 innings. In his four big-league seasons, Dunn has a 4.44 ERA (6.23 FIP), 1.51 WHIP and 19.4 percent strikeout rate in 32 starts over 133 2/3 frames.

Justin Dunn To Miss More Time
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Justin Dunn (shoulder) is reportedly seeking a second opinion on his lingering shoulder issues. The 27-year-old is scheduled to see an orthopedic surgeon next week in New York. Dunn seemed fine until last week when he experienced renewed soreness in his shoulder after throwing a bullpen session. The organization has decided to shut him down until he gets his second opinion. The expectation is that Dunn is going to miss a good chunk of Spring Training because of this issue. There is no timetable for his return and he struggled during his time with the Reds last season. At this point, it's best to avoid Dunn in most fantasy formats for the moment.

Lucas Sims, Justin Dunn Should Be Ready For Camp
Cincinnati Reds relief pitcher Lucas Sims (back) and starting pitcher Justin Dunn (shoulder), who both missed time with injuries in 2022, have been throwing and should be ready for spring training. Meanwhile, reliever Tejay Antone's (forearm) throwing program has been slowed this offseason by a forearm issue, but it's unrelated to his elbow issue that required Tommy John surgery in 2021. He'll be eased in as camp opens. When healthy, Sims and Antone figure to be important high-leverage arms in Cincy's bullpen in front of expected closer Alexis Diaz. Dunn started seven games for the Reds in 2022 but had an unsavory 6.10 ERA and 1.58 WHIP with only 21 strikeouts in 31 innings pitched.

Justin Dunn To Begin Rehab Assignment Tuesday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Justin Dunn (shoulder) is scheduled to begin a minor league rehab assignment with Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday and throw 50 to 55 pitches. He is eligible to return from the 15-day injured list on Friday, which means he could be able to make one more start for the Reds before the end of the 2022 regular season. The 27-year-old landed on the injured list on Sept. 15 with right shoulder tightness, but he's made quick progress after missing the first three months of the season with a similar issue. Because of all the missed time due to injury this year, Dunn has made just seven starts for Cincy, going 1-3 with a 6.10 ERA (8.31 FIP), a 1.58 WHIP and a 21:17 K:BB in 31 innings. He won't be a streaming option with a fantasy title on the line if he makes another start for the Reds.

Justin Dunn To Make Reds Debut Monday
Cincinnati Reds right-hander Justin Dunn will be recalled from Triple-A Louisville on Monday to make his debut with the team against the New York Mets. Dunn got a late start to the 2022 season due to a shoulder injury, but he completed a lengthy rehab assignment in the minor leagues and is now ready to join Cincinnati's starting rotation after they traded away Luis Castillo and Tyler Mahle recently. In eight starts for High-A Dayton and Triple-A Louisville, he had a 6.75 ERA, a 1.82 WHIP and a 24:17 K:BB in 28 innings. The 26-year-old had a decent 3.75 ERA, 1.31 WHIP and 49 K's in 50 1/3 innings over 11 starts for the Seattle Mariners in 2021 and will be worth a look for rotation depth in deeper leagues since he should have a good chance at sticking in Cincy's depleted rotation.

Justin Dunn Expected To Miss A Couple Months
Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Justin Dunn (shoulder) is expected to miss a couple of months with a shoulder injury. Dunn was part of the package acquired from the Seattle Mariners in the trade that sent third baseman Eugenio Suarez and outfielder Jesse Winker to Seattle. The right-hander battled shoulder and control issues last year for the M's, although he did have a decent 3.75 ERA (4.74 FIP) and 49 strikeouts in 50 1/3 innings over 11 starts. The 26-year-old was expected to compete for a rotation spot to open the year, but that obviously won't happen now. Top prospect Hunter Greene, Nick Lodolo and Brandon Williamson could be candidates to begin the year in the rotation with both Dunn and Luis Castillo injured.
