Pittsburgh Pirates outfielder Ka'ai Tom (back) was placed on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a low back strain, the team announced on Twitter. The move was made retroactive to Friday, and in a corresponding move the Pirates recalled pitcher Kyle Keller from Triple-A Indianapolis. Tom hasn't really had any value in fantasy this year, as he's slashing .152/.308/.261 over 39 games since joining the Pirates. With Tom out, this likely means an increase in playing time for prospect Jared Oliva, who is 0-for-5 with three strikeouts in two games this season.

Tom was slashing .200/.364/.300 with a home run, one steal, seven RBI and three runs scored in 16 games since joining Pittsburgh. Tucker had a down year in 2020, slashing .220/.252/.275 over 37 games, and while he has been slightly better at the plate in Triple-A this year, he's still slashing just .214/.302/.339 in 14 games. Unless you're in a very deep, NL-only league, Tom and Tucker can both be left on the waiver-wire.

Tom was a Rule 5 pick last December after spending five years in the Cleveland farm system; his first appearance this season will be his MLB debut. The 26-year-old will serve as the fourth-outfielder behind Mark Canha, Ramon Laureano, and Stephen Piscotty. While being the fourth outfielder leaves Tom on the outside looking in when it comes to fantasy, keep an eye on him this season. Tom had as good a spring as anyone in A's camp as he slashed .310/.412/.552 with four extra-base hits and four walks against eight strikeouts. If he winds up in a starting role he could be worth a speculative add in deeper fantasy leagues.

Oakland Athletics outfielder Ka'ai Tom is 8-for-16 with four extra-base hits and five RBI through five Cactus League games. Tom was a Rule 5 Draft pick and is competing for the fourth outfielder job in Oakland with Seth Brown. Tom was impressive again on Monday roping a two-run double and also drawing a walk against the Diamondbacks. Manager Bob Melvin has taken notice of Tom and said the 26-year-old will continue to get chances to prove himself with Oakland after spending five years in the Cleveland farm system. As it stands, Tom doesn't have much fantasy value, but managers in deep leagues and AL-Only formats should continue to monitor Tom who seems on track to make his MLB debut for the A's this season.
