His star has faded significantly since he led the majors in home runs with 48 in 2018. He has hit a total of just 28 home runs in the majors since that season.

Davis is now 3-for-9 (.333) in the early going and adds depth to a strong lineup if he can generate similar results to his run from 2013-2018. From 2016-18, in particular, the right-handed hitter slugged at least 42 homers each year. The 33-year-old is in the final season of a two-year contract and with a limited market for designated hitters in recent years, he's no doubt motivated to have strong results.

Texas Rangers general manager Jon Daniels provided an update on Khris Davis' (quad) injury and said it would keep the designated hitter out for three to four weeks. The Grade 2 left quad injury means that he won't be available for opening day. The club is also without Willie Calhoun (groin) due to injury and he would have been the favorite to fill in at the DH slot. Daniels said the club may rotate players through the position to keep them healthy and refreshed until Davis or Calhoun return. The former is coming off a disappointing season with the Oakland Athletics but the Rangers acquired him in the offseason with hopes that he would provide 20+ home run pop.
