Luis F. Ortiz News
Right-handed pitching prospect Luis Ortiz was optioned by the Pittsburgh Pirates to their Triple-A team. This move comes after the top-100 prospect put up an ERA of 10.50 in three spring training starts. Ortiz made his major-league debut last September with an xERA of 2.96 and an opponent wOBA of just .230 in four starts. His elite fastball-slider combo -- .114 opponent average on his 98 mph heater and an average of .174 on his slider -- draws comparisons to 2023 National League Cy Young contender Spencer Strider. The 24-year-old still needs a bit of polish, but his elite stuff is worth stashing, especially on a Pirates team that's already low on quality starting pitching.

Luis Ortiz Making MLB Debut In Game 2 Tuesday
Pittsburgh Pirates right-hander Luis Ortiz has been called up from the minors and will make his major league debut in Game 2 of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Cincinnati Reds, according to manager Derek Shelton. Ortiz is the team's No. 30 prospect, per MLB Pipeline, and went a combined 5-9 with a 4.56 ERA, 1.14 WHIP, 138 strikeouts and 38 walks in 124 1/3 innings over 26 appearances (25 starts) for Double-A Altoona and Triple-A Indianapolis this year. The 23-year-old can hit the upper-90s with his heater, but he typically sits in the mid-90s with his fastball. Ortiz generates a lot of swings and misses with his out pitch, a slider. Because of how hard he throws, he could eventually be an arm out of the bullpen in a worst-case scenario.

Luis Ortiz Called Up To Start Friday
The Baltimore Orioles called up starting pitcher Luis Ortiz from Triple-A Norfolk in order to start against the Red Sox on Friday. Ortiz was 2-6 with a 7.01 ERA, 1.63 WHIP, 23 walks and 41 strikeouts in 52 2/3 innings over 11 starts for Norfolk this season, so fantasy owners should stay far away from the 23-year-old in what is likely to just be a spot start for the struggling Orioles rotation. Feel free to stack Red Sox hitters in DFS games in the very friendly matchup.

Luis Ortiz Shut Down
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Luis Ortiz (hamstring) will not pitch again this year. Ortiz made his first major league start last Friday and had to come out after 1 2/3 innings. He went 5-5 with a 3.70 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 7.8 K/9 over 22 outings (17 starts) with the Brewers and Orioles in the minors this year. Expect him to compete for a rotation spot next spring with Baltimore.

Luis Ortiz Feeling Better
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Luis Ortiz (hamstring) is feeling much better on Tuesday. The rookie made his first career start last Friday and had to leave early after allowing a run in 1 2/3 innings against the White Sox. He's not much of a streaming option anyways, but Ortiz may just be shut down for the year with only a week-plus left of action.

Luis Ortiz Unlikely To Return Soon
Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter said that starting pitcher Luis Ortiz (hamstring) is unlikely to be available anytime soon. Ortiz will have an MRI exam on Monday or Tuesday. The right-hander was injured covering a base in his first ever major league start over the weekend. He doesn't need to be owned in any fantasy leagues and may not pitch again this year, depending on his MRI results.

Luis Ortiz Could Undergo MRI
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Luis Ortiz (hamstring) is very sore on Saturday and could need to undergo an MRI exam after leaving his start early on Friday. Ortiz was making his first ever major league start on Friday. With time running out on the regular season, the Orioles could elect to play it safe with Ortiz and shut him down if his injury is significant enough. He's not much of a streaming option in fantasy if he winds up making another start for the worst team in baseball.

Luis Ortiz Injured Friday
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Luis Ortiz (hamstring) left his MLB debut early on Friday due to a left hamstring strain. Ortiz said he dealt with a similar injury earlier in the year in the minors, but this one doesn't seem as serious. The rookie had allowed one earned run on four hits in 1 2/3 innings to take the loss against the White Sox. There's no telling if Ortiz will be able to make another start before the season ends. Stay tuned for more details about the severity of his injury. He won't be a very attractive fantasy streamer if he gets anymore starts this year.

Luis Ortiz To Start Friday
Baltimore Orioles starting pitcher Luis Ortiz will make his first major league start on Friday against the White Sox. Ortiz made his first even MLB appearance last week and allowed three hits and three earned runs in just two-thirds of an inning. Hopefully he'll fare much better this time out, but he's not a recommended streamer and might not last very long for desperate fantasy owners.

Orioles Call Up Luis Ortiz
The Baltimore Orioles have called up starting pitcher Luis Ortiz, who went 2-1 with a 3.66 ERA in six starts for Triple-A Norfolk after being the centerpiece in the deal that sent second baseman Jonathan Schoop to Milwaukee. It remains to be seen if Ortiz will make any starts at the big league level in September, but the Orioles certainly have nothing to lose. Consider the No. 7 prospect in Baltimore's system in AL-only and deeper leagues as a streaming option if he makes any starts.
