Emmanuel Clase, Luis L. Ortiz to Remain On Leave for Rest of Season

Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase and starter Luis L. Ortiz will remain on the restricted list and administrative leave for the rest of the season, Francys Romero of BeisbolFR.com reports. Major League Baseball has been investigating both players for gambling for several weeks. Clase hasn't pitched since July 26, while Ortiz last took the mound on June 27. The Guardians cleared out both players' lockers on Aug. 1, so it's not surprising that they won't return this year. Depending on what MLB uncovers in its investigation, it's possible that neither will suit up in the majors again. Clase, a two-time American League Reliever of the Year, was amid another productive season before the league put him on the shelf. The 27-year-old pitched to a 3.23 ERA with a 1.23 WHIP, 47:12 K:BB, and 24 saves in 47 1/3 innings. Cade Smith has taken over as the Guardians' closer in Clase's absence. Ortiz, 26, made 16 starts and went 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA, a 1.38 WHIP, and 96:42 K:BB over 88 2/3 frames.

Emmanuel Clase, Luis L. Ortiz Have Lockers Cleared Out in Guardians' Clubhouse

Cleveland Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase and starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz have both had their lockers cleared out in the Guardians' clubhouse, according to Zack Meisel of The Athletic. Both pitchers are currently on paid leave through August 31 as MLB investigates them as part of a potential gambling-related conspiracy. This could be a clear indication that neither should be expected to pitch again in 2025, but the results of the investigation are still pending. Clase had recorded 24 saves in 47 1/3 innings this season. Hard-throwing right-hander Cade Smith is the lead candidate to fill his absence in the ninth inning. Ortiz was 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA and 1.38 WHIP in 88 2/3 innings (16 starts). Left-hander Joey Cantillo has stepped into Cleveland's rotation in his place.

Luis L. Ortiz to Remain on Leave for Another Month - Will he Pitch Again?

Major League Baseball has extended the paid leave for Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis L. Ortiz through Aug. 31 as they continue their investigation for a possible gambling-related offense, according to Zack Meisel of MLB.com. The league has been looking into Ortiz since early July. Depending on what MLB finds, it's possible that the 26-year-old won't pitch at all for the rest of the 2025 season. Fantasy managers have to prepare for that possibility. Before going on paid leave, the 26-year-old Dominican had gone 4-9 for the Guards with a 4.36 ERA (4.13 FIP) and 1.38 WHIP with 96 strikeouts and 42 walks in 88 2/3 frames over 16 starts in his first season with the team. With Ortiz out at least another month, lefty Joey Cantillo figures to remain in Cleveland's rotation. Cantillo had an ERA just south of 5.00 with 18 K's and six walks in his three starts for the Guardians.

Luis L. Ortiz the Subject of Gambling Investigation

Updating a previous story, Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis L. Ortiz is being investigated by the league after a betting-integrity firm flagged a pair of his pitches that had received unusual gambling activity, according to sources. Major League Baseball has placed Ortiz on "non-disciplinary paid leave" through July 17, which is the end of the All-Star break. The first alert was sent on June 15 triggered by action on Ortiz's first pitch against the Mariners in the bottom of the second inning to be a ball or a hit batsman. Ortiz started the inning with a slider well out of the strike zone. The second alert came on June 27 on his first pitch against the Cardinals in the top of the third being a ball or hit batsman. Ortiz opened with a slider well out of the zone. It's a serious and sensitive issue, and Ortiz's leave could be extended if the league's investigation remains open for the start of the second half of the season.

Luis L. Ortiz Under MLB Investigation, Placed on Paid Leave

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Luis L. Ortiz is under investigation by Major League Baseball and has been placed on paid leave, Jeff Passan of ESPN reports. The league did not provide a reason for the decision. Ortiz had been scheduled to start Cleveland's game on Thursday against the Chicago Cubs, so fantasy managers will need to adjust accordingly. The 26-year-old has made 16 starts this season and gone 4-9 with a 4.36 ERA, 96 strikeouts against 42 walks, and a 1.38 WHIP in 88 2/3 innings.

Luis L. Ortiz Looks Excellent in Win

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz posted a strong bounce back outing versus the Athletics on Saturday. Ortiz gave up six runs during his last outing, but looked untouchable here. He tossed six scoreless innings, allowing two hits, while striking out 10 batters in the win. The 10 strikeouts tied a season-high for Ortiz as the A's hitters had no answers in this one. Ortiz has been inconsistent this season, which makes him a tough player to roster in fantasy formats. He could have decent streaming value for his next outing against the St. Louis Cardinals.

Luis L. Ortiz Pitches Well But Dealt Loss

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz allowed four hits and one earned run over six innings in his team's 3-0 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. The Dominican Republic native walked two and struck out nine in the quality start, falling to 2-4 on the season. Ortiz put together a strong performance on Sunday, with a second-inning Kyle Schwarber home run accounting for the only blemish against him. Although he was otherwise excellent, Phillies pitcher Zack Wheeler outdueled him with seven scoreless innings of three-hit ball, while his offense failed behind him. The 26-year-old has been up-and-down in eight starts thus far, registering four outings with at least eight punchouts but two with four or more runs. He'll carry an inflated 4.78 ERA and 1.36 WHIP (43 1/3 innings) into his next start on the road against the Cincinnati Reds.

Luis L. Ortiz Tosses Six Shutout Innings

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz pitched 6 scoreless innings in a 4-2 win over the Twins on Wednesday. He struck out five while allowing three hits and two walks. This was his best start of the season so far, as he came into the outing with an inflated 5.96 ERA, which he lowered to 4.78 after this start. Ortiz certainly isn't the most stable pitcher, but one promising aspect of his skillset is his 30.9% whiff rate, which ranks in the 80th percentile. If he can continue to miss bats while limiting hard contact, he could become more fantasy relevant down the line, but for now, he's a streaming option at best.

Luis L. Ortiz Earns First Win With Career-High 10 Strikeouts

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Luis L. Ortiz had struggled in spring training and in his first two starts of the year, but he was much sharper on Saturday against the Royals, allowing just one run on one hit in 5 2/3 innings while stacking up a career-high 10 strikeouts and issuing just two walks. He threw exactly 100 pitches in his outing and improved to 1-2 on the year with a still-elevated 6.06 ERA and 4.63 FIP. He had 16 whiffs, a 36% whiff percentage, and a 34% CSW percentage. He will look to build on his successful home debut as he returns to face his former team in Pittsburgh on Friday in his next start.

Guardians Acquire Luis L. Ortiz From Pirates

The Cleveland Guardians acquired pitchers Luis L. Ortiz, Josh Hartle and Michael Kennedy from the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night in exchange for infielder Spencer Horwitz, according to sources. Ortiz is the biggest name in the swap for the Guardians as they look to add pitching depth to their system. The 25-year-old Dominican right-hander had his best year in the big leagues in his third year with Pittsburgh in 2024, going 7-6 with a 3.32 ERA (4.25 FIP), 1.11 WHIP, a career-high 107 strikeouts and 42 walks in 135 2/3 innings over 37 appearances (15 starts). Even though the Guardians re-signed Shane Bieber already this offseason, Ortiz could be primed for a spot near the back end of Cleveland's starting rotation to open the 2025 regular season. Ortiz was slightly better as a starter in 2024 but had a strikeout rate under 20%, limiting his overall upside as a matchup-based streamer in deeper leagues.
