Gavin Williams Shines in Postseason Start Despite Guardians' Loss

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams was one of the lone bright spots in Tuesday's 2-1 loss to the Detroit Tigers in Game 1 of the 2025 Wild Card Series. Making his second career postseason start, the 26-year-old struck out eight and allowed only two unearned runs on five hits and one walk. Williams showed poise and command on the mound, keeping Cleveland within reach despite limited offensive support. While he was tagged with the loss, his performance proved he can handle the October stage.

Gavin Williams Starting Game 1 for the Guardians

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams will get the ball for the first game of his team's Wild Card series against the Tigers. He'll go head-to-head with Tarik Skubal on Tuesday afternoon in Cleveland. The Guardians went 8-5 against Detroit this season, winning five of six head-to-head matchups in September while surging past the slumping Tigers and claiming the division crown. Williams was outstanding down the stretch for Cleveland, going 5-1 in his last seven starts with a 2.04 ERA, 3.74 FIP, and 46 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings. He beat the Tigers in each of his final two regular-season starts, allowing a total of two runs on seven hits with 21 strikeouts in 11 innings against the Tigers. He'll look to continue that dominance and give his team a chance to take Game 1 if he can match Skubal on Tuesday.

Gavin Williams Strikes Out Eight in No-Decision on Sunday

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams was dominant in a 7-2 loss to the Detroit Tigers in 10 innings on Sunday. Williams tossed six innings of shutout ball while allowing just one hit, walking three, and striking out eight. The third-year hurler was never in line for the win as he departed with the game scoreless following the sixth inning, but it was still an impressive start against the AL Central-leading Tigers. Williams has come on strong over his past seven starts, posting a 1-1 record, 2.72 ERA, and 30 strikeouts in 39 2/3 innings of work. Overall, he has a 5-4 record, 3.61 ERA, 1.41 WHIP, and 90 strikeouts on the season while proving his worth as an above-average fantasy starting pitcher. He will look to stay hot in his next start, which is set for Friday against the Chicago White Sox.

Gavin Williams Strikes Out Six in Quality Start

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams picked up his fifth win of the year in a 4-2 victory over the Angels on Sunday. He pitched a quality start, allowing two unearned runs on one hit and two walks while striking out six. It was a nice bounce-back outing after he failed to last five innings in his last time out against the Dodgers. It's been an up-and-down season for the 25-year-old, who was a popular breakout pick heading into the season. He's had some solid starts but has ultimately struggled with control to the tune of a 13.2% walk rate. The youngster should be considered a back-end rotation type for fantasy that you can play the matchups with, but won't fully be able to be trusted until he can get the ball in the zone more consistently.

Gavin Williams Blanks Phillies Over Five Innings

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams allowed four hits and no runs across five innings of work in Friday's 6-0 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies. The East Carolina alum struck out eight and walked four while improving to 3-2 on the year. Williams again dealt with command issues, hurling 53 of 98 pitches for strikes and walking at least four batters for the second straight start. On the bright side, he's struck out 17 batters over that time, so it hasn't all been bad. Still, command like that will continue to limit his upside and force him from starts early. The 25-year-old's underlying metrics aren't all that inspiring, but he'd be an interesting fantasy asset if he could get the free passes under control. Look for him to line up against the Milwaukee Brewers or the Cincinnati Reds in the middle of next week.

Gavin Williams Records Eight Strikeouts

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams posted arguably his best outing of the season versus the New York Yankees on Monday. The right-hander went 6 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts in the win. This was a nice bounce back outing from Williams who gave up five earned runs during his last start. Outside of his one bad start, Williams has allowed two earned runs or less in four of his five starts this season. He'll look to keep the good times rolling against the Boston Red Sox tough lineup in his next start.

Gavin Williams Records Seven Strikeouts

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams posted his best outing of the season against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. The right-hander went five innings, allowing three hits, one earned run, and struck out seven batters in the win. He gave up a run in the first inning, but settled down nicely after that. In fact, Williams retired 12 of his last 13 batters before exiting the game at 94 pitches. The 25-year-old has the potential to be a top of the line starter, but he's not quite there yet. Williams will get a challenging matchup against the Baltimore Orioles during his next start. Fantasy managers might want to wait and see how that goes before jumping on the waiver wire to add Williams.

Gavin Williams Impresses In Second Spring Outing

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams tallied six punchouts across 2 1/3 innings on Tuesday against the Los Angeles Angels. Williams struck out the side in the opening frame. In the second, Williams allowed two baserunners, one via a hit and the other by a hit by pitch. However, he managed to tally three strikeouts to escape the jam. He was given an opportunity to pitch in the third but allowed a leadoff double that eventually scored on an RBI single. Through 4 1/3 innings of work this spring, Williams has tallied nine punchouts and held a 2.08 ERA with a 0.92 WHIP. Last season, the 25-year-old logged 76 innings of work and held a 4.86 ERA with a 1.37 WHIP. Fantasy managers should continue to monitor his strikeout upside during camp, as he could be taking the next step in his development. He is expected to operate as the No. 2 starter in the Cleveland rotation this season behind Tanner Bibee.

Gavin Williams To Start Game 4 Against Yankees

Cleveland Guardians right-hander Gavin Williams will make the start in Game 4 of the American League Championship Series on Friday at Progressive Field against the New York Yankees. Williams made only 16 starts due to an elbow injury for the Guardians during the regular season and went 3-10 with a 4.86 ERA (3.67 FIP) and 1.37 WHIP with 79 strikeouts and 32 walks in 76 innings in his second big-league season, so he'll be a true wild card and a risky DFS option on Thursday against the Bombers in what will be his first start since Sept. 22. In his lone start against the Yankees in the Bronx on Aug. 22, Williams took the loss, allowing three earned runs on four hits (one homer) while walking four and striking out five in 4 1/3 innings of work. The 25-year-old was also worse at Progressive Field in 2024, sporting a 6.55 ERA and 1.69 WHIP in his seven starts.

Gavin Williams Fans Nine In Tough Loss

Cleveland Guardians starting pitcher Gavin Williams turned in a quality start in Thursday's tough-luck loss versus the division-rival Detroit Tigers. Williams tossed six frames and allowed six hits, three runs, two walks and recorded a season-high nine strikeouts. Unfortunately for Williams, the Guardians offense decided to take the day off, giving Williams his third loss of the season. Since returning from right-elbow inflammation on June 30, Williams has pitched to a 4.50 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 24 innings over five starts. The potential is there for the 25-year-old as he continues to shake off the rust, and he could be a valuable piece at the back end of rotations in the second half. Next up for Williams will be a rematch with the Tigers, this time at home.
