Foster Griffin Set to Make Guardians Debut on Thursday

Cleveland Guardians left-hander Foster Griffin will make his first start with the team on Thursday against the New York Mets, per Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. The Guardians acquired Griffin from the Washington Nationals on Monday in exchange for four minor leaguers. After three years of pitching in Japan, Griffin returned to the big leagues this season and was having a breakout year with Washington. Across 129 1/3 innings (22 starts) before the trade, he recorded a 12-3 record with a 3.06 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, and 116 strikeouts. The 31-year-old is averaging just 91.5 miles per hour on his fastball and has logged a middling 22.1% strikeout rate on the year. However, he limits walks (5.7% walk rate) and generates ground balls at a solid clip. In Cleveland, Griffin should remain a quality innings eater who offers solid win potential for fantasy managers.

Guardians Acquire Lefty Starter Foster Griffin From the Nationals

The Cleveland Guardians acquired left-hander Foster Griffin from the Washington Nationals on Monday, a source told Mark Feinsand of MLB.com. The Athletic's Spencer Nusbaum reports that the Guardians are sending minor-league pitchers Will Dion, Josh Hartle, and Kendeglys Virguez, and outfielder Nick Mitchell to the Nationals. The 31-year-old veteran southpaw will head to the American League Central to bolster Cleveland's starting rotation alongside Gavin Williams, Parker Messick, Joey Cantillo, and Tanner Bibee. Griffin will become a free agent after the 2026 season, so he could end up just being a rental for the rest of this year. The former first-rounder by the Kansas City Royals in 2014 has gone 12-3 this year with a 3.06 ERA (4.09 FIP) and 1.07 WHIP with 116 strikeouts and 30 walks in 22 starts and 129 1/3 innings pitched in his first big-league season since 2022 after spending the last three years playing in Japan. Griffin is currently tied for fourth in baseball with his 12 wins, and he will definitely bolster the Guards' rotation down the stretch. The lefty allowed six earned runs in 5 1/3 innings in a loss to the Atlanta Braves his last time out last Friday, but Griffin had a strong stretch from June 5 through July 19 where he didn't allow more than an earned run in any of his eight starts for the Nats.

Foster Griffin is an Interesting Sell-High Candidate

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Foster Griffin has been one of the biggest surprises this season. Griffin returned to the big leagues this season after spending the last three years in Japan. He has been excellent and earned himself the first All-Star selection of his career in 2026. Through 19 starts, Griffin registered a 2.77 ERA, 1.01 WHIP, and a 109/26 K/BB ratio across 110.1 innings this season. The 30-year-old is showing no signs of slowing down, but fantasy managers shouldn't put too much faith in him. Dynasty managers especially should consider selling high on Griffin. Given his age and the level of success he's experiencing, it's likely only going to regress from here. He doesn't have much of a professional track record and has already thrown well over 100 innings this season. Griffin could still be a valuable fantasy asset, but him posting ace-type numbers in the long-term seems unlikely.

Foster Griffin a Waiver-Wire Target With Good Upcoming Matchup

Washington Nationals left-hander Foster Griffin had another solid outing on Wednesday at Oracle Park against the San Francisco Giants, although he did not factor into the decision. Griffin allowed just one earned run on six hits (one homer) while walking none and striking out five in six innings for a quality start. Since allowing 14 earned runs in 9 1/3 innings on May 14 and May 19 against the Cincinnati Reds and New York Mets, the 30-year-old southpaw has steadied the ship by giving up only five earned runs on 16 hits (five homers) while walking three and striking out 20 in 22 innings over his last four starts. Griffin's strong start on Wednesday in the Bay Area dropped his season ERA to 3.46 (4.75 FIP) and his WHIP to 1.09 in his 14 starts. He has struck out 74 and walked 21 in 78 innings pitched. Griffin is due for some regression the rest of the way, but fantasy managers should consider picking him up off the waiver wire for his next scheduled outing against the Kansas City Royals, who rank 25th in baseball with a .693 OPS.

Is Foster Griffin Still Worth Targeting on the Waiver Wire Amidst Recent Struggles?

Across 67 innings (12 starts) so far in 2026, Washington Nationals starting pitcher Foster Griffin has recorded a 6-2 record with a 3.76 ERA, 1.15 WHIP, and 65 strikeouts. The 30-year-old has cooled off a bit in recent weeks after a red-hot start to the season, allowing 17 earned runs over his last 20 1/3 innings (four starts). The long ball has been an issue for Griffin, as he currently owns a 1.75 HR/9. Still, Griffin has limited opponents to a 37.8% hard-hit rate and owns a quality 15.7% K-BB rate. There's also reason to think he's been a bit unlucky to give up homers as often as he has, as his 18.1% home run to fly ball rate is well above league average. Griffin may not offer crazy upside, but he remains a solid starting pitcher streamer for fantasy managers to target on the waiver wire.

Foster Griffin a Waiver-Wire Target in Anticipation of Bounce-Back?

Washington Nationals starting pitcher Foster Griffin has hit a bit of a skid lately, but the underlying metrics suggest that he's a bounce-back candidate, which bodes well for his rest-of-season fantasy outlook. Griffin has allowed 14 earned runs over his last 9.1 innings of work, but he has still maintained a solid 4.02 ERA across 10 starts. More importantly, he has a 3.84 xFIP with 8.68 K/9 and 2.89 BB/9 so far. Home runs have been his kryptonite to this point; allowing 1.61 HR/9 is a primary reason why he's been roughed up lately. He allowed just 0.12 HR/9 in the NPB last year, so fantasy managers should be optimistic that he'll crack down on loud contact sooner rather than later. He has hung around as the #76 starter in RotoBaller's latest fantasy baseball rankings, and he's a solid waiver wire option as he remains available in 60% of leagues.

Foster Griffin a Trade Candidate for Nationals?

Washington Nationals left-hander Foster Griffin, who signed a one-year, $5.5 million contract in the offseason, has been one of the best offseason moves so far in baseball. FanSided's Robert Murray writes that Griffin could be a trade candidate ahead of the Aug. 3 deadline, or he could be a candidate for a long-term extension, although sources say there haven't been any talks about a potential long-term deal. The 31-year-old southpaw currently has a sharp 2.12 ERA through his first eight starts of the 2026 season for a Nationals team that is currently two games under .500 (20-22). Griffin could be the latest left-hander to cash in on a long-term deal in his first season after coming from Japan. The former first-rounder by the Kansas City Royals in 2014 has allowed more than three earned runs in just one of his starts this year and has given up one earned run on nine hits (one homer) while walking seven and striking out 20 in 20 innings over his last three starts. Despite pitching at hitter-friendly Great American Ballpark on Thursday, Griffin will be an enticing streamer against a Reds team that ranks 25th in baseball in OPS (.684). Griffin is rostered in under 70% of Yahoo leagues right now.

Foster Griffin, Nationals Agree on One-Year Deal

Free-agent left-hander Foster Griffin and the Washington Nationals agreed on a one-year, $5.5 million deal on Tuesday, pending a physical, sources familiar with the deal told Robert Murray of FanSided.com. With incentives, Griffin can make up to $6.5 million. The 30-year-old southpaw will make a return to the U.S. after three seasons pitching for the Yomiuri Giants of Nippon Professional Baseball. Griffin had a nice 2.57 ERA and 1.03 WHIP with a 25.1% strikeout rate in 315 2/3 innings in Japan the last three seasons, and he'll be competing for a spot in Washington's starting rotation in spring training. He was originally a first-round pick by the Kansas City Royals in 2014. Griffin made his MLB debut in 2020 in KC but only appeared in seven big-league games in two seasons, allowing seven runs (six earned) in eight innings pitched.

Foster Griffin Is on Teams' Radar After Strong Work in Japan

Left-handed pitcher Foster Griffin hasn't pitched in the majors since 2022, but he could be one of the most under-the-radar free agents this coming offseason. He split time in 2022 between the Royals and Blue Jays before joining the Yomiuri Giants in the Nippon Professional League. This year, he has posted a 0.75 ERA with 72 strikeouts in 12 games (11 starts). He is 6-0 with a 1.39 FIP and 0.86 WHIP in his 72 innings. Griffin reportedly switched up his arsenal this year, catching the eye of several MLB teams with his strong start to the season, according to Fansided's Robert Murray. Griffin will be a name to watch this offseason as teams look to fortify their rotations, and he could be very productive, despite his non-traditional path through Japan.

Foster Griffin Placed On 45-Day IL With Arm Injury

Kansas City Royals left-handed Foster Griffin was perfect for five outs in his Major League debut Monday before departing due to a left forearm strain that will now sideline him into at least September. A first-round Draft choice in 2014, Griffin could have seen a considerable workload in the shortened 2020 campaign as the Royals navigate a pitching staff that is behind the 8-ball without right-handers Jakob Junis and Brad Keller yet available. In addition to the loss of Griffin, right-handed pitcher Jorge Lopez was placed on the bereavement list, leaving Kansas Citys staff even more short-handed. Neither Griffin nor Lopez merits much fantasy consideration at this stage, although their absence paves the way for other young arms to get a look moving forward.
