Free-agent third baseman Martin Prado announced his retirement on Wednesday. Prado finished the 2019 season with the Marlins, hitting .233/.265/.294 with two home runs and only 15 RBI in 104 games. The 36-year-old spent 14 years in the majors and was an All-Star back in 2010 with the Braves. He started his career with Atlanta before moving to the Diamondbacks, Yankees and then Marlins. Prado finishes with a .287/.335/.412 slash line, 100 home runs, 609 RBI and 40 stolen bases in his career. He was never much of a power guy, never hitting more than 15 long balls in a single season, but he was consistent as a contact bat and had a solid glove on the infield at multiple positions.
Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado has told friends that he will likely retire this offseason. The 36-year-old played in just 104 games in 2019 and managed 94 games in 2017 and 2018 combined due to injuries. He hit a meager .233/.265/.294 with two home runs and 15 RBI for the Fish last season and wasn't even on the fantasy radar in deep mixed and NL-only leagues. In his 14-year career, Prado sports a solid .287 average, 100 home runs, 664 runs scored, 609 RBI and 40 stolen bases in 1,458 games. He was an All-Star back in 2010 with the Braves.
The Miami Marlins placed first baseman Martin Prado (hamstring) on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a right hamstring strain and recalled infielder Yadiel Rivera from Triple-A New Orleans in a corresponding move. Starting pitcher Jose Urena (back) was also moved to the 60-day injured list. Prado was hitting just .239 with a homer and 12 RBI in 155 at-bats and was only worth owning in NL-only formats. Expect Garrett Cooper to see most of the starts at first base moving forward. He's been hot at the dish and warrants a pickup in deep mixed leagues while he's hot. Rivera has a little speed but is unlikely to see many at-bats as a utility infielder.
Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado was forced from Wednesday's game early after limping while attempting to run out a ground ball. The team is calling it right hamstring tightness, and he's considered day-to-day. Prado was 1-for-2 with a run in this one as he's hitting a soft .239 on the year with a homer and 12 RBI. The veteran doesn't offer any value in anything other than NL-only formats, and even that is a stretch. The Marlins have an off-day Thursday before hosting the Pirates for a weekend series on Friday. Expect Prado to be back in the lineup at some point during that series.
Miami Marlins first baseman Martin Prado (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Milwaukee Brewers. The veteran slugger has been below average this season and will get the day off to rest. Garrett Cooper will draw the start at first base and bat second versus righty Jimmy Nelson. It's never a great idea to bet on the Marlins offense, but this is Nelson's first start of the season. He pitched decent during his rehab assignment starts, but Cooper could get a few knocks against him. Cooper is worth looking at as a cheap DFS option for Wednesday.
Curtis Granderson Out Against Lefty, Martin Prado At First Base
Miami Marlins outfielder Curtis Granderson is not in the starting lineup on Friday against Padres left-handed starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi. Austin Dean is leading off and hitting leadoff, while Martin Prado will get the first crack at first base with Neil Walker (quadriceps) on the injured list. Dean is a desperation deep sleeper consideration in DFS, as he has eight hits in 43 at-bats (.186) with a homer and 11 strikeouts. Prado isn't much better (.234 average, one homer in 124 at-bats), so he's one to fade with very little upside left in his game.
Miami Marlins third baseman Martin Prado went 0-for-4 in the loss to the Cubs on Thursday. Despite his ineffective outing against Mike Montgomery, the 35-year-old has been relatively productive against left-handed pitching, amassing a .355 average with 11 hits in 31 plate appearances on the year. Prado and the Marlins will next head to New York to meet with the Mets on Friday with Zack Wheeler on the bump. The 28-year-old sits at 2-2 with a 4.64 ERA, allowing 27 hits and a .276 average against right-handed batters so far in 2019.
Miami Marlins infielder Martin Prado (rest) is out of the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Chicago Cubs. It appears this is just a routine day off for the veteran slugger. Neil Walker will play first base and bat third versus righty Kyle Hendricks. Walker is a decent cheap option for DFS contests since he has a habit of killing the Cubs in the past.
Miami Marlins infielder Martin Prado is in the starting lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cleveland Indians. Neil Walker is sitting out and has only seen two plate appearances over the last three games. Prado will play first base and bat fifth versus righty Corey Kluber. Prado is hitting for a solid average this season and Kluber has struggled heavily. DFS players may want to take a look at Prado on Wednesday.
Miami Marlins infielder Martin Prado collected two hits and an RBI in the 7-4 loss to the Indians on Tuesday. The 35-year-old has taken advantage of his resurgence in the starting lineup, accumulating eight hits while knocking in six runs over the last 11 games for a Miami team that has had its share of struggles offensively this season. As long as he can remain healthy, the veteran should retain his role in the starting lineup with an occasional day off in an attempt to preserve his aging body for a full season.
