The Philadelphia Phillies designated outfielder Matt Joyce for assignment on Sunday. The team selected the contract of pitcher Hans Crouse in a corresponding move and Crouse went on to start Sunday's game against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The 37-year-old Joyce has been injured for a great deal of the season and he's struggled immensely at the plate when he's been active. Over 43 games this year, he's slashed .091/.261/.218 with two home runs, seven RBI and six runs.
The Philadelphia Phillies placed outfielder Matt Joyce (back) on the 10-day injured list due to a lower back strain on Saturday. Fellow outfielder Matt Vierling was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. The team also called up catcher Rafael Marchan while placing catcher Andrew Knapp on the seven-day concussion injured list. Joyce has struggled significantly at the plate this year. Over 36 games, he's slashed .100/.258/.240 with two home runs, six RBI and five runs.
Matt Joyce Clubs Pinch-Hit Grand Slam Against Reds
Philadelphia Phillies outfielder Matt Joyce hit a grand slam in a blowout win over the Reds on Tuesday night in Cincinnati. The visitors already had a 10 run lead when Joyce pinch-hit for the pitcher, but that didn't stop the veteran outfielder from getting in on the fun in the 17-run outburst for the Phils' offense. Despite the salami, there's not much to get excited about with Joyce for fantasy purposes. He serves as the fourth-outfielder and has started just two games in the last week. With Bryce Harper (wrist) close to returning, Joyce feels like the likely candidate to send down to clear a roster spot when one is needed. He can be left on waivers in fantasy.
The Philadelphia Phillies have placed outfielder Matt Joyce (calf) on the 10-day injured list with a calf injury. The team also placed outfielder Roman Quinn (finger) on the injured list on Wednesday. Mickey Moniak and Scott Kingery were recalled to replace the injured outfielders and both should see a decent amount of playing time due to the team's barrage of outfield injuries. Joyce has struggled at the plate this year. Through 18 games, he's slashing .100/.289/.133 with only one extra-base hit, a double.
Matt Joyce Puts Together A Three-Hit Game On Monday
Miami Marlins outfielder Matt Joyce had a three-hit game on Monday, helping to lead the Marlins to an 11-8 win over the Washington Nationals. Joyce went 3-for-6 with three singles, a run scored, and two RBI. After a bit of a slow start, Joyce has been one of the most consistent and productive Marlins batters against right-handed pitching. He'll head into his next game with a .306 batting average and an .812 OPS.
Marlins Put Lewis Brinson, Matt Joyce On Injured List
The Miami Marlins placed outfielders Lewis Brinson and Matt Joyce on the 10-day injured list on Thursday. Neither player has appeared at summer camp since it began, making it likely that their absence is COVID-19-related. The fact that neither outfielder has gotten repetitions in camp also likely means that they will not be ready by Opening Day next Friday. A former top prospect of the Brewers, the 26-year-old Brinson has disappointed so far at the major league level by hitting .183 in 205 games with Milwaukee and Miami. He hit just .173 with no home runs and 15 RBI in 75 games in 2019. Joyce swung the bat well in limited playing time with Atlanta last year, and the veteran figures to platoon in the outfield once he's healthy. Neither player has much appeal in mixed leagues in 2020.
With the designated hitter being used in both leagues this season, Miami Marlins first baseman/outfielder Garrett Cooper and outfielder Matt Joyce are two candidates to be used in the role a lot. Cooper is the much more attractive fantasy commodity in deeper leagues for his ability to hit for average and modest power for the Fish. He has a better shot at consistent playing time with the DH now in play in the National League, but even then Cooper could be at risk of losing valuable at-bats if he starts slow. Joyce, who turns 36 in August, had only 200 at-bats for the Braves last year but did hit an impressive .295 with seven home runs and 23 RBI. Don't expect those kind of numbers in Miami with limited playing time.
The Miami Marlins signed outfielder Matt Joyce to an undisclosed deal on Sunday. Joyce hit a respectable .295/.408/.450 with seven home runs and 23 RBI, but in just 200 at-bats for the Braves last season. The 35-year-old isn't a bad left-handed bat for the rebuilding Fish, but there's no guarantee that he'll receive meaningful at-bats in an everyday role for the Marlins in 2020. At best, Joyce is a bench option for those in deep NL-only leagues.
The Atlanta Braves reinstated outfielder Matt Joyce from the bereavement list on Tuesday. The 34-year-old Joyce is mainly a pinch-hitting option for Atlanta but will see the occasional start in the outfield against a right-hander. He's hitting .250/.345/.458 with two homers and five RBI in just 48 at-bats on the season. Joyce really only comes into play in DFS formats as a deep sleeper on the off chance he's in the starting lineup against a weak right-handed starter.
Matt Joyce to Bereavement List, Kyle Wright Recalled
Atlanta Braves outfielder Matt Joyce was placed on the bereavement list Friday after the passing of his uncle, and starting pitcher Kyle Wright was recalled from Triple-A Gwinnett to take his roster space. Wright has started six games in the minors and three in the Majors this season, but will likely be a bullpen arm right now given the apparent temporary nature of his call-up. Wright was MLB.com's 30th-ranked prospect before the season but has struggled to a 7.57 ERA at Triple-A and 7.07 in MLB this year.
