The Milwaukee Brewers acquired right-hander Mitch White from the San Francisco Giants on Friday in exchange for cash considerations and designated right-hander Corbin Martin for assignment in a corresponding move. White started the year with the Toronto Blue Jays and is now on his third organization in the first month and a half of the year. The 29-year-old will likely be a swingman for Milwaukee after recording a rough 7.63 ERA (5.71 FIP) and 1.76 WHIP with nine walks and seven strikeouts in 15 1/3 innings with the Blue Jays and Giants this year, all of which have come out of the bullpen. If the former second-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016 out of Santa Clara makes any starts for the Brewers because of their banged-up rotation, White will merely be a shaky deep-league streaming option in fantasy.
Toronto Blue Jays manager John Schneider made sure to point out how "electric" right-hander Mitch White looked in his first bullpen session this spring, where he was sitting at around 94-95 mph with his fastball. Along with Bowden Francis, White is a leading candidate for the fifth starting rotation spot to open the 2024 season. He's been less successful in the big leagues, but he ended the season well at Triple-A Buffalo and is out of minor-league options. If he doesn't win a starting spot, he'll be a leading candidate to break camp in a long-relief role. The 29-year-old has had an ERA over 7.00 in his short time with the Blue Jays since 2022, but he could be in play in AL-only leagues if he shows improvement this year and manages to win the No. 5 starting role.
Mitch White, Bowden Francis Being Built Up As Starters
Both Toronto Blue Jays pitchers Mitch White and Bowden Francis are being built up as starters in spring training. Cuban right-hander Yariel Rodriguez is also coming to camp as a starter, but he needs more time to get extended after not pitching at all in affiliated ball in 2023. The 29-year-old White could have an edge on the team's final roster spot in either a starting or relief role, but a spot in the bullpen is more likely. The main reason that White could break camp with the team this spring is that he's out of minor-league options. Most likely, he'll be a swing man in 2024. Francis, 27, has been mostly a starter in the minors, but all 21 of his big-league outings have come out of the bullpen. He's been great in 37 MLB relief innings, too, posting a 1.70 ERA and 0.84 WHIP, so he could become an intriguing AL-only streamer if he's making starts for Toronto in 2024.
The Toronto Star's Gregor Chisholm projects that right-hander Mitch White will break camp with the last spot in the bullpen to start the 2024 regular season. White is out of minor-league options and can't be sent down without having to clear waivers. Right-hander Jordan Romano is the clear closing option, while Chad Green, Tim Mayza, Erik Swanson, Yimi Garcia, Genesis Cabrera and Trevor Richards should also have spots in the Opening Day bullpen in Toronto. White may open the year on the big-league roster, but he's going to need to pitch better to stay there once the season kicks off. The 29-year-old had a career-worst 7.11 ERA and 1.74 WHIP with seven walks and 13 strikeouts in 12 2/3 innings over 10 appearances in relief in the majors in 2023. He's off the fantasy radar.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mitch White (elbow) felt good after throwing a 20-pitch bullpen session Monday. This is the first update on the 28-year-old since he was shut down late in spring with right elbow inflammation. White has dealt with both elbow and shoulder injuries in 2023, so it remains to be seen when he may be fully ramped up to join the team. It will also remain to be seen what his role will be with the Blue Jays once he does rejoin them. White compiled a 5.45 ERA, 1.46 WHIP, and 17.7% strikeout rate in 25 appearances (18 starts) in 2022 with the Dodgers and Blue Jays.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Mitch White (shoulder) is set to throw live batting practice on Friday. He recently threw a 43-pitch bullpen and may even throw a few innings in spring training if all goes according to plan. White suffered a shoulder impingement over the offseason and is slowly ramping things up to become a full-time starter. The 28-year-old made 10 starts with the Los Angeles Dodgers and twirled a 3.95 FIP with 47 strikeouts. He was then sent to the Blue Jays in a four-player deal, where he spent the remainder of the season. He made eight starts and had a disastrous finish to his 2022 campaign with a 7.74 ERA. The Dodgers are known for their pitching development, and the Blue Jays can only hope that White finds similar success as a starter in the upcoming season.
Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Mitch White has been recalled to make the start against the Tampa Bay Rays on Friday. The 27-year-old holds a 5.05 ERA, 1.41 WHIP. and 71/30 K/BB ratio through 16 starts this season. He looked solid during a spot start last week, so it appears the team wants to give him another shot. However, manager John Schneider hinted that the team might go to the bullpen early in this one. That being said, it's tough to call White a possible streaming option for Friday.
Mitch White Recalled From Triple-A, Will Start Saturday
Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Mitch White has been recalled from Triple-A Buffalo, according to an announcement from the club. Assuming the bad weather holds off, he'll start against Minnesota on Saturday. White was acquired from Los Angeles at the trade deadline after throwing 11.2 scoreless innings for the Dodgers' Triple-A affiliate, and he has also looked solid through 15 outings in the majors. White reported to the Blue Jays' Triple-A club in Buffalo but didn't appear in a game, so Saturday's start represents his debut in the Jays organization.
The Los Angeles Dodgers optioned right-handed starting pitcher Mitch White to Triple-A on Wednesday. White was optioned to the minors along with left-handed reliever Garrett Cleavinger as the Dodgers needed to make room on the active roster for starter Andrew Heaney, who was activated from the injured list, and right-hander Jake Reed, who was recalled. White has made 15 appearances this season, including 10 starts. He's been a quality option for both the Dodgers and fantasy managers, pitching to a 3.70 ERA, a 3.96 FIP, 47 strikeouts, and 19 walks in 56 innings of work.
Los Angeles Dodgers starting pitcher Mitch White gave up plenty of hits to the Washington Nationals Tuesday, but those nine base knocks only resulted in two runs over six innings. White struck out four and did not walk a batter, leaving the game in position for a win before a late bullpen implosion. White has been solid across 10 starts and 15 appearances this season, with a 3.70 ERA and 1.25 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in 56 innings. He's a very solid streamer with big upside for wins on a strong team, and he may work his way up the rankings heading into the 2023 fantasy season.
