Phil Hughes Retires

Phil Hughes officially announced his retirement from baseball more than two years after throwing his last pitch. The 34-year-old right-hander announced on Twitter on Sunday what's been "fairly apparent ... these last couple years." Hughes won the World Series with the Yankees in 2009 and went 88-79 with a 4.52 ERA in 211 career starts and 79 relief appearances over 12 major league seasons with the Yankees, (2007-13), Twins (2014-18) and Padres (2018). He went a career-best 18-8 and was an All-Star in 2010. Hughes also won 16 games in 2012 and 2014. The righty dealt with various injuries in his career, having season-ending surgery in 2016 to fix thoracic outlet syndrome, a condition that recurred and caused him to miss the final three-plus months in 2017.

Phil Hughes and Kirby Yates Return for Padres

The San Diego Padres have activated Phil Hughes off of the disabled list and reinstated Kirby Yates from paternity leave. Kazuhisa Makita and Robert Stock were sent to Triple-A in corresponding moves. Hughes has pitched to a disappointing 6.23 ERA since coming to the Padres and holds no fantasy value. Yates, on the other hand, has a strong 0.79 ERA with a 41/9 K/BB ratio over 34 games. He's stuck behind closerBrad Hand for now, but Hand has been mentioned as a potential trade piece at the deadline. If Yates is given an opportunity to see regular saves, he could become a must-have in deeper fantasy leagues.

Phil Hughes Acquired By Padres

The San Diego Padres have acquired starting pitcher Phil Hughes from the Minnesota Twins in exchange for a minor league catcher. Hughes had previously been designated for assignment by the Minnesota Twins on May 21. Hughes has struggled for the past couple seasons including this season with his ERA constantly above 5.87 and his WHIP above 1.508. Also, he has failed to pitch for more than 60 innings per season since 2015. Hughes should not be owned in any fantasy formats due to his struggles over the past couple of seasons.

Phil Hughes Designated For Assignment

The Minnesota Twins designated right-hander Phil Hughes for assignment on Monday, meaning they have seven days to trade him, place him on waivers, or make him a free agent. Hughes was excellent in 2014, his first season with the Twins, but has struggled with injuries since, logging just 280 total innings since the start of the 2015 season. Hughes opened this year in the team's starting rotation but was demoted to the bullpen when the team promoted rookie right-hander Fernando Romero to the big leagues a few weeks ago. Hughes has pitched 12 innings for the Twins in 2018, posting a 6.75 ERA.

Twins Call Up Fernando Romero; Phil Hughes To Bullpen

The Minnesota Twins will call up right-hander Fernando Romero and send right-hander Phil Hughes to the bullpen to make room for the rookie in the rotation. Hughes missed most of April after suffering an oblique strain during spring training and has made just two starts in 2018, posting a 7.71 ERA in seven innings of work. Romero can hit 98 mph and has posted a 2.57 ERA in four appearances in Triple-A. Monitor Romero in deep mixed leagues but swoop him up now in dynasty/keeper formats and AL-only leagues.

Phil Hughes Struggles In Second Start

Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes struggled in his second start of the season, allowing the Cincinnati Reds to score four runs in 3 2/3 innings. Hughes allowed five hits and walked two while logging three strikeouts in the game. The veteran hurler, who opened the season on the disabled list with an oblique strain, now has a 7.71 ERA and five strikeouts in seven innings of work. Injuries have ruined his past few seasons and he is no longer a trustworthy fantasy option.

Phil Hughes Activated from DL, Starting for Twins on Sunday

Minnesota Twins starting pitcher Phil Hughes has been activated from the disabled list and is starting on Sunday against the Rays. Hughes had been on the DL with an oblique strain. The Twins pitcher has appeared in just 26 games the past two seasons and is coming off of surgery for thoracic outlet syndrome. Couple that with his daunting 4.47 career ERA and Hughes makes for an untrustworthy streamer on Sunday, even against a bad Rays team.

Phil Hughes Should Throw Around 90 Pitches OnSunday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes will make his 2018 debut on Sunday when he takes the mound against the Tampa Bay Rays. Hughes injured his oblique during spring training and opened the season on the 10-day disabled list. Despite the injury, the veteran has a reasonably long leash in his first start in about 11 months. Manager Paul Molitor told reporters that he thinks Hughes can throw about 90 pitches. The Rays haven't been very good on offense but it would still be wise to avoid Hughes as a streamer on Sunday.

Phil Hughes Will Not Start Thursday

Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes, originally scheduled to start Thursday, will instead throw a bullpen session. The change in schedule will leave the Twins without a Sunday starting pitcher, leaving the slot to be announced by the team. Hughes has been on the disabled list since the season opened after suffering an oblique injury during spring training. The veteran hurler has struggled with assorted injuries over the past few seasons, appearing in just 26 games since the start of the 2016 season.

Phil Hughes Will Throw This Week

Minnesota Twins right-hander Phil Hughes (oblique) is scheduled to throw a side session either Tuesday or Wednesday this week. The veteran pitcher has been on the disabled list since the season began after coming down with an oblique strain during spring training. Hughes is lined to up make a spot start for the Twins against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, April 13. After that start, the Twins won't need a fifth starter until April 24, so it remains to be seen what the team chooses to do with him in the meantime. Hughes has made only 26 appearances over the past two seasons due to assorted injuries.
