Phillip Evans News
The Arizona Diamondbacks agreed to a minor-league deal with former New York Mets and Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Phillip Evans on Friday. The deal includes an invitation to major-league spring training next year. Evans didn't play in the big leagues at all in 2022 but has four years of experience at the top level with a career .231/.331/.319 slash line with a .651 OPS, six home runs, 27 RBI, 34 runs scored and two stolen bases in 353 plate appearances over 121 games played. The 30-year-old spent all of last season toiling at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre in the New York Yankees organization, and he hit .244/.310/.366 with nine long balls, 33 RBI, 45 runs scored and two stolen bases in 103 contests. Evans will merely serve as organizational depth in Arizona.
The New York Yankees signed free-agent third baseman Phillip Evans to a minor league deal on Tuesday. Evans spent the 2021 season with the Pittsburgh Pirates, slashing .206/.312/.299 with five home runs and 16 RBI in 247 plate appearances over 76 games. The 29-year-old spent his first two big-league seasons with the New York Mets, and he has a career .231/.331/.319 slash line with only six home runs and 27 RBI in 353 plate appearances over 121 games in his four seasons. Evans will provide organizational depth at the hot corner in 2022.
The Pittsburgh Pirates activated infielder/outfielder Phillip Evans from the seven-day concussion list on Friday and optioned infielder Cole Tucker to Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. Evans was out since July 5 after suffering a concussion in a game against the Atlanta Braves. The 28-year-old was seeing regular playing time at first base before his injury with both Colin Moran and Erik Gonzalez on the injured list, but he isn't a lock to see regular at-bats upon his return as long as John Nogowski continues to swing a hot bat. Evans wouldn't be anything more than bench depth in NL-only leagues, though, with his .208/.310/.311 slash line and five homers and 15 RBI in 183 at-bats in 2021.
