Free-agent left-hander Ross Detwiler signed a minor league deal with the Cincinnati Reds on Monday. Detwiler might need to build up more after not being with a team during spring training, but he could eventually settle at Triple-A Louisville. The 36-year-old veteran will provide the Reds with bullpen depth in the minors or in Cincinnati, but he won't be on the fantasy radar. Detwiler had a 4.64 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, 62 strikeouts and 20 walks in 52 1/3 innings over 53 outings (five starts) for the Miami Marlins and San Diego Padres. The southpaw has a 4.56 career ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 725 2/3 innings over 277 outings (100 starts) in 13 major league seasons.
Miami Marlins relief pitcher Ross Detwiler, the starting pitcher in Monday's bullpen game, was thoroughly embarrassed by the Washington Nationals. Detwiler recorded just one inning of work, getting three outs while allowing eight runs on seven hits, giving up four home runs. Detwiler gave up four runs in the first inning and then was left on to allow another four in the second because why not at that point? His ERA skyrocketed to 6.11 and any sliver of trade value he might have had likely disappeared. It's going to be a long second half for the Marlins.
Miami Marlins relief pitcher Ross Detwiler had a rough outing in Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. Detwiler threw one inning, allowing four runs on three hits and a walk. He was in for the fifth inning in the game and threw 24 pitches, 15 for strikes. Detwiler has experience as both a starter and as a reliever, but he will be in the Marlins bullpen, likely working in middle relief. He won't have much fantasy value given his projected role.
Chicago White Sox pitcher Ross Detwiler will draw the start against the Kansas City Royals on Thursday. He was moved to the bullpen, but will make at least one more appearance in the starting rotation. He has a 5.02 ERA this season, so he's not a favorable fantasy option. Detwiler can be avoided, even against the struggling Royals offense.
White Sox Call Up Ross Detwiler To Start On Friday
The Chicago White Sox have purchased the contract of pitcher Ross Detwiler from Triple-A Charlotte and he will start on Friday. Detwiler is 8-8 with a 3.98 ERA in Triple-A and owns a career 4.36 ERA. The lefty can be avoided in a tough matchup versus the Twins on Friday.
Oakland A's pitcher Ross Detwiler, who has been pitching all season for the Triple-A Nashville Sounds, opted out of his contract and was granted his release by the A's. He is now a free agent. Detwiler made nine appearances for the A's last year (seven starts) and pitched to a 6.14 ERA with a 1.60 WHIP and a 4.7 K/9. He had pitched to a 1.17 ERA in the month of May but has a 7.50 ERA on the season. He was pitching exclusively out of the bullpen in Nashville. Detwiler is best known for being a productive reliever for the Nationals between 2009-2014, but he has struggled over the last two seasons. He will look for another opportunity to make an impact with a big league ballclub in 2017. Unless he pitches his way into an MLB starting rotation, which at this point seems highly unlikely, he should not be on your fantasy radar.
