Ryan Thompson Picks Up First Playoff Win In Game 7

Arizona Diamondbacks relief pitcher Ryan Thompson picked up his first career playoff win in the 4-2 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies in Game 7 of the National League Championship Series on Tuesday night. Thompson entered in the fifth inning to face left-handed slugger Kyle Schwarber and eventually went 1 1/3 perfect innings to pick up the win and help send the Diamondbacks to their first World Series appearance since 2001. The 31-year-old right-hander isn't a big strikeout guy but relies on soft contact on the ground to succeed. So far in this year's postseason, Thompson has allowed three earned runs on 10 hits while walking three and striking out eight in 10 2/3 innings out of Arizona's bullpen.

Ryan Thompson Makes Spring Debut

Tampa Bay Rays right-hander Ryan Thompson (triceps) made his Grapefruit League debut on Sunday against the Baltimore Orioles and walked one in a scoreless inning of work in relief. Thompson ended the 2022 season on the 60-day injured list due to right triceps inflammation, but he's healthy now and should be just fine for the start of the 2023 season. Although the 30-year-old isn't much of a fantasy weapon, he was an integral piece of Tampa's bullpen last year before his injury and had a 3.80 ERA (3.42 FIP), 1.17 WHIP, three saves, 10 holds and a career-high 39 strikeouts in 42 2/3 innings over 47 appearances out of the bullpen.

Ryan Thompson Secures Third Save On Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Thompson tossed a scoreless inning to earn the save during Thursday's 3-1 win over the Texas Rangers. He entered the ninth inning to protect a 3-1 lead. The 29-year-old needed just eight pitches to retire the side and earn this third save of the season. He owns a 6.50 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 14 strikeouts over 18 innings in 2022. Tampa Bay continues to rotate relievers for save opportunities while Andrew Kittredge (back) is on the 15-day injured list. Thompson is a speculative add in deep-league formats for fantasy managers desperately searching for saves.

Ryan Thompson Converts One-Out Save On Thursday

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Ryan Thompson was called upon to close out the team's 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Thursday. He entered the game in the ninth inning with two outs and a man on first with Tom Murphy up to bat. He managed to get Murphy to strike out on five pitches. Thompson is now 2-for-2 in save opportunities on the year. He's pitched 6.2 innings this season and he's allowed four hits, two walks and two runs (both unearned). He is second on the team in saves behind Andrew Kittredge, who has three. Kittredge wasn't utilized at all during Thursday's game. He did, however, save Wednesday's game, pitching 1 1/3 innings in the contest.

Ryan Thompson Gets The Save For Tampa Bay On Sunday

On Sunday, Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Ryan Thompson became the team's third reliever to record a save this year. He closed out the team's 5-2 victory over the Boston Red Sox by pitching a scoreless ninth inning. He retired each of the three batters he faced and recorded one strikeout. Andrew Kittredge, who leads the team with two saves, pitched a pair of innings on Saturday, so the team may have wanted to hold him out on Sunday. Thompson has been extremely effective so far this year. Over seven appearances and 6.1 innings, he has allowed four hits, two walks and no earned runs. Kittredge should still be considered the frontrunner for saves in Tampa Bay, but knowing the Rays, there will be save opportunities for Thompson and some others sprinkled in throughout the year.

J.P. Feyereisen, Ryan Thompson Set For Rehab Assignment

Tampa Bay Rays pitchers J.P. Feyereisen (shoulder) and Ryan Thompson (shoulder) are slated to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham. Both pitchers will likely need multiple appearances in Triple-A before being activated and have a decent chance of returning to the Rays bullpen by the end of August. Feyereisen has been sidelined since July 20 and will be used in a high-leverage role once he returns. The 28-year-old owns a 2.81 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 38 strikeouts over 41 2/3 innings this season. Thompson will also be used in high-leverage situations after posting a 2.38 ERA, 1,03 WHIP, and recording 11 holds over 36 games in 2021.

Ryan Thompson Will Throw Bullpen Session Friday Or Saturday

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Thompson (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session Friday or Saturday. The 29-year-old was shut down for a few days on July 8 after feeling shoulder discomfort. He will begin a rehab assignment soon and could return to the Rays bullpen later this month. The Rays right-hander owned a 2.38 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 37:9 K: BB across 34 innings in 2021. Thompson does have fantasy value in league formats which reward solds (saves and holds) as the Rays right-hander is 20th in the majors with 11 holds.

Ryan Thompson Unlikely To Return This Weekend

Tampa Bay Rays relief pitcher Ryan Thompson (shoulder) is "progressing" but is unlikely to be ready for the first series after the All-Star break this weekend, according to manager Kevin Cash. However, the club is hopeful that Thompson will rejoin them early in the second half after he goes on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Durham. The 29-year-old right-handed reliever was shut down for a few days after feeling discomfort on July 8. Thompson should return to the Rays bullpen later this month, barring a setback. He's been pretty reliable in 34 innings of relief in 2021, going 3-2 with a 2.38 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 37/9 K/BB ratio, but he'll only be on the fantasy radar in deeper leagues that count holds.

Ryan Thompson Placed On The 10-Day Injured List

Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Ryan Thompson was placed on the 10-day injured list with right shoulder inflammation. The move is retroactive to June 28. He owned a 2.38 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, and a 37:9 K: BB across 34 innings before landing on the injured list. Thompson is more valuable in league formats which reward solds (saves and holds) after racking up 11 holds in 2021. It's unclear if Thompson will miss more than the 10-day minimum. Pitcher Ryan Sherriff was recalled from Triple-A Durham in a corresponding move.

Ryan Thompson Optioned To Alternate Training Site

Tampa Bay Rays reliever Ryan Thompson was optioned to the team's alternate training site on Wednesday evening. The team had to reach the 28-person roster limit prior to Thursday's contest. Thompson impressed during summer camp, but never found a concrete role for himself in the Rays' bullpen. He posted a 1.50 ERA with four strikeouts and three walks in six innings of work in 2020.
