Steve Pearce Officially Retires From Baseball

First baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce announced his retirement from baseball on Monday night, while appearing as a guest on WEEI's broadcast of the 2018 Red Sox World Series run. The 37-year-old was named World Series MVP in 2018 after totaling three home runs, eight RBI, five runs scored and a .333 batting average through 16 plate appearances to help the Red Sox clinch the championship winning series against the Dodgers. Pearce finished his 13-year career with 91 home runs, 303 RBI, a .254 batting average, .332 on-base percentage and .772 OPS while spending time as a member of the Pirates, Orioles, Astros, Yankees, Rays and Blue Jays, before earning World Series MVP honors and finishing his career as a member of the Red Sox.

Steve Pearce Could Return This Weekend

Boston Red Sox first baseman Steve Pearce (back) took the day off on Monday but will resume his rehab assignment with Single-A Lowell on Thursday and play in three straight games. Barring setbacks, Pearce could return this weekend against the Blue Jays. The 36-year-old has already been on the injured list multiple times this season and is hitting an ugly .180/.245/.258 with a homer, nine runs and nine RBI in 89 at-bats. Pearce will only be useful in AL-only leagues and as a low-priced DFS flier for his power when he faces left-handed pitchers.

Steve Pearce Starting Rehab Assignment Friday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Steve Pearce (back) will start his rehab assignment on Friday with Single-A Lowell. He's been on the injured list with a lower back strain since June 1 but swung a bat on Wednesday and is progressing well. Pearce could rejoin the team by the end of their upcoming six-day road trip or return when they come home next Friday. He is hitting a measly .180 (16-for-89) with one homer and nine RBI on the season after getting a late start to the year due to an injury. Pearce does have some pop in his bat still, but he's mostly just a low-priced DFS play when he's facing a left-hander.

Mitch Moreland Improving, Steve Pearce Cleared

Boston Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland (quadriceps) is improving and doing treadmill work after landing back on the injured list on Saturday. First baseman Steve Pearce (back) has been cleared to begin baseball activities on Monday. Moreland has been the much more fantasy relevant first baseman than Pearce in 2019, hitting .225 but with 13 home runs, 25 runs and 34 RBI in 151 at-bats as the team's primary first baseman against right-handed pitchers. Pearce is hitting under the Mendoza Line after winning the World Series MVP last fall. He's strictly a DFS option when he's healthy and facing the right lefty.

No Baseball Activities For Steve Pearce

Boston Red Sox first baseman Steve Pearce (back) has not resumed baseball activities while on the injured list. The World Series MVP last season has hit just .180/.245/.258 with a homer and nine RBI in his 89 at-bats. There's no timetable for his return to the Red Sox. When he's back, he's really only a DFS play or an AL-only option for his power against left-handed pitchers.

Mitch Moreland To Return Soon, Steve Pearce Will Take Longer

Boston Red Sox first baseman Mitch Moreland (back) continues to hit off a tee in Boston and is expected to rejoin the team on the upcoming homestand. He's eligible to come off the injured list on Wednesday, but the team is likely to wait to the weekend to make the move. First baseman Steve Pearce (back) has yet to resume baseball activities after getting injured last Friday. Pearce is eligible to return on June 11 but will likely take longer to return. Moreland is the much more attractive fantasy commodity in deep mixed leagues, too, for his power. The 33-year-old has hit only .228 but has 13 long balls, 25 runs, 34 RBI and a steal in 149 at-bats in 2019.

Steve Pearce Placed On Injured List

The Boston Red Sox placed first baseman Steve Pearce (back) on the 10-day injured list on Saturday with a lower back strain and recalled first baseman/outfielder Sam Travis from Triple-A Pawtucket in a corresponding move. Pearce had done very little after winning the World Series MVP, hitting just .180/.245/.258 with a homer and nine RBI in 89 at-bats. He doesn't need to be owned in any mixed leagues at this point and is really only a low-priced DFS play against southpaws when he's in the lineup. With Mitch Moreland also on the injured list, Michael Chavis could split time at first with Travis, which would allow Eduardo Nunez and Brock Holt to share playing time at the keystone.

Steve Pearce Suffers Back Spasms Friday

Boston Red Sox first baseman Steve Pearce (back) left the game early with back spasms on Friday and is listed as day-to-day. The 36-year-old was hitless in his only plate appearance before leaving. It's been all downhill since Pearce won the World Series MVP, as he's hitting .180/.245/.258 with a homer and nine RBI in 99 plate appearances this year. He'll get more run with Mitch Moreland on the injured list, but Pearce is really only a DFS consideration at the moment when he starts against lefties.

Steve Pearce Finally Enters Home Run Column

Boston Red Sox utility man Steve Pearce finished 3-for-5, with a home run and three runs batted in during an 8-2 win over Toronto Thursday. The long ball was his first of the season and his three RBI give him just eight in 24 games played. Pearce now has a hit in four straight games that he has appeared in. If he can continue to trend upward at the plate, he may see more consistent playing time. However, a .180 expected batting average has some serious work ahead of it before Pearce becomes fantasy relevant. A weekend series with the Astros, including a Sunday matchup with Justin Verlander, doesn't bode well for a player like Pearce who is still trying to find himself at the plate.

J.D. Martinez Sitting Monday, Steve Pearce Will DH

Boston Red Sox designated hitter J.D Martinez will get Monday off, against the Toronto Blue Jays. In his place, Steve Pearce will DH and bat seventh against right-hander Edwin Jackson. Pearce simply hasn't been good in 72 plate appearances this year, slashing just .121/.183/.152 with two doubles and four runs batted in, leaving him off any DFS radar. Catcher Sandy Leon will share battery privileges with David Price and bat ninth. The 30-year-old catcher is batting .200 with a home run and five RBI and can safely be left in DFS player pools.
