The Cleveland Guardians signed free-agent right-hander Tyler Beede to a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league spring training on Saturday. The 30-year-old pitched for the Yomiuri Giants in Nippon Professional Baseball in 2023 and had a 4.08 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in 75 innings pitched. The former first-rounder wasn't very good in his four major-league seasons with the San Francisco Giants and Pittsburgh Pirates, going 7-16 with a 5.34 ERA (4.97 FIP), 1.56 WHIP and 163 strikeouts in 187 innings pitched over 58 appearances (29 starts). Beede will most likely begin the year at Triple-A Columbus in 2024 and will give the Guardians some extra pitching depth during the regular season.
The Pittsburgh Pirates designated right-hander Tyler Beede for assignment on Thursday and recalled left-hander Eric Stout from Triple-A Indianapolis in a corresponding move. The Pirates also designated left-hander Dillon Peters for assignment after he was returned from his minor league rehab assignment. In 31 appearances (five starts) for the Pirates and San Francisco Giants this year, Beede has posted a 5.14 ERA (4.99 FIP), a 1.63 WHIP, 39 strikeouts and 29 walks in 61 1/3 innings. All five of his starts have come with Pittsburgh. The 29-year-old allowed 30 earned runs on 57 hits (six homers surrendered) while walking 23 and striking out 35 in his 51 2/3 frames for the Bucs.
The Pittsburgh Pirates claimed right-hander Tyler Beede off waivers on Thursday, according to sources. Beede was designated for assignment by the San Francisco Giants on May 5, and he was a former first-round pick out of Vanderbilt back in 2014. The 28-year-old made 22 starts for the Giants in 2019, but he's made only seven relief appearances for San Francisco since then. In 9 2/3 innings of relief for the Giants this year, Beede allowed five earned runs on 14 hits while walking six and striking out four over six outings. In Pittsburgh, he could have a shot at returning to a starting role, although he won't be worth a look in standard-sized fantasy leagues.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tyler Beede was sent to Triple-A Sacramento and Caleb Baragar was recalled in a corresponding move on Sunday, according to the Bay Area News Group. The 28-year-old Beede gave up three earned runs in one inning of work on Saturday against the Washington Nationals in his first start back from the 60-day injured list. Baragar, a 27-year-old right-hander, is 7-2 with a 2.43 ERA over 40 2/3 innings for the Giants over the past two seasons, mostly in relief. Beede should be back at some point in the second half of the season, but he'll need to prove himself before fantasy managers consider him as a streaming option in deeper formats.
Tyler Beede Called Up, Jaylin Davis To The Injured List
The San Francisco Giants called up right-hander Tyler Beede from Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday and placed outfielder Jaylin Davis (hamstring) on the injured list with a Grade 1 hamstring strain in a corresponding move. Outfielder Jason Vosler was also called up from Sacramento, while right-hander Jimmie Sherfy was designated for assignment. Beede will be making his first appearance since 2019 after having Tommy John surgery last spring, and he could be an option to start against the Washington Nationals on Friday. He's had trouble with his command in the minors this year and had a 6.56 ERA and 32 walks in 35 2/3 innings over 12 starts on the farm, so he'll be an extremely risky fantasy streamer if he enters the Giants rotation to close out the first half of the season.
Tyler Beede Could Become Rotation Option At The End Of May
San Francisco Giants right-hander Tyler Beede (elbow) looked good in his first post-Tommy John live bullpen session on Monday, giving the team optimism that he'll be a starting rotation option when he's eligible to come off the 60-day injured list on May 31. "It went great," manager Gabe Kapler said. "The velocity was there. He threw his curveball and changeup for strikes. It was definitely encouraging to see." Outfielder LaMonte Wade Jr. (oblique) faced Beede on Monday, but the Giants want to give him "at least one more live look" before activating him from the injured list. Beede, 27, was 5-10 with a 5.08 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and a 113:46 K:BB in 117 innings (22 starts) for San Fran back in 2019, so fantasy managers aren't in any rush to add him back to their rosters.
Tyler Beede, John Brebbia Recovering From Tommy John Surgery
San Francisco Giants pitchers Tyler Beede (elbow) and John Brebbia (elbow) have leaned on each other's experiences during their recoveries from Tommy John surgery. Beede had his surgery in March of 2020 and Brebbia had his in June of 2020. Both pitchers will likely be unavailable to pitch for the Giants until June, as both are currently on the 60-day injured list. Beede hopes to begin making rehab starts in early May, while Brebbia has started throwing off the mound. Both pitchers will not have the opportunity to contribute to the Giants or fantasy teams until they complete their recoveries.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tyler Beede (elbow) will undergo Tommy John surgery on Friday in Dallas with Dr. Keith Meister, according to president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi. Beede felt tightness in his elbow in an exhibition game on March 3 and an MRI exam showed he had a flexor strain and a UCL sprain. The right-hander had been competing for a spot at the back end of the team's starting rotation, but he'll now miss all of the 2020 season and likely the beginning of next year as well after going 5-10 with a 5.08 ERA in 2019. You can now cross Beede off your board in deep mixed and NL-only leagues if you have yet to draft in single-year formats.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tyler Beede (elbow) underwent an MRI exam on Tuesday night and was diagnosed with a flexor strain and a UCL sprain in his right elbow. The Giants are gathering second opinions and will have more information on his diagnosis later this week. The right-hander doesn't think he'll need surgery, but we'll have to wait for what the team says. It's bad news for Beede and anyone that was planning to grab him late in deep mixed or NL-only leagues, as he's likely to miss the start of the season now. Logan Webb could benefit by winning the No. 5 rotation spot out of spring, but he'd only be an NL-only flier.
San Francisco Giants starting pitcher Tyler Beede (elbow) exited his outing Tuesday against the Rangers after experiencing tightness in his pitching elbow, per MLB.com's Maria Guardado. Beede pitched one inning, allowing no runs on one hit and a walk with one strikeout. He is scheduled to undergo tests Tuesday night. The 26-year-old is currently fighting for a rotation spot with the Giants. Fantasy players should stay tuned until the results of his tests are known. If Beede's injury isn't too serious and he wins the final rotation spot to begin the year, he'll have some late-round flier appeal in deep mixed leagues.
