Royals Sign Tyler Duffey, Mike Brosseau

The Kansas City Royals agreed to terms on minor-league deals with right-handers Tyler Duffey and Dan Altavilla, infielder Mike Brosseau and left-hander Sam Long on Thursday. Duffey and Brosseau are the most notable names. The 32-year-old Duffey made only one relief appearance with the Chicago Cubs in the majors in 2023, but he carries nine years of big-league experience with a career 4.57 ERA (3.97 FIP), 1.29 WHIP and six saves in 477 innings pitched. Brosseau, 29, hit just .205 (15-for-73) with four home runs and eight RBI in 29 games for the Milwaukee Brewers this past season before being cut and heading overseas to play in Nippon Professional Baseball in Japan. All four of KC's signings on Thursday will add minor-league depth for the 2024 campaign.

Cubs Add Tyler Duffey On Minor-League Deal

The Chicago Cubs signed free-agent right-hander Tyler Duffey as a non-roster invitee on Friday, according to a source. Duffey will compete for a bullpen job in spring training. He made 295 appearances for the Minnesota Twins over the last eight seasons, and the Cubs have a good track record with these types of free-agent relievers. The 32-year-old veteran has a good shot of making the Cubs bullpen out of spring training. Last year with Minnesota, he had a 4.91 ERA (4.79 FIP), 1.36 WHIP, two saves and 21.1 percent strikeout rate in 44 innings over 40 relief appearances. In eight major-league seasons, he has a 4.57 ERA (3.96 FIP), 1.29 WHIP and six saves in 475 innings. If Duffey makes the big-league club, he won't have much fantasy appeal, if any.

Tyler Duffey Signs With Yankees

The New York Yankees signed free-agent relief pitcher Tyler Duffey to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday. Duffey had a 1.88 ERA and 0.79 WHIP in 24 innings for the Minnesota Twins in the shortened 2020 season. In 44 innings pitched for Minnesota earlier this year, Duffey went 2-4 with a 4.91 ERA (4.81 FIP), a 1.36 WHIP and a 39:15 K:BB in 40 relief appearances, including two saves. The 31-year-old right-hander was also briefly with the Texas Rangers this year, but he didn't appear in the majors. Duffey will likely report to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and he'll provide some veteran relief depth for the Yankees down the stretch and into the postseason.

Tyler Duffey Earns First Save Of Season Monday

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey picked up his first win of the season in Monday's 3-1 win over the A's. Duffey entered the game to pitch the ninth inning up by two and delivered a 1-2-3 inning with a strikeout. Duffey is second on the team in save opportunities but has converted just one of three of them so far and bullpen lead Emilio Pagan had pitched in the team's last three games prior to this one. Duffey does have four holds and a 3.00 ERA on the season, but Pagan is the bullpen arm for fantasy managers to roster at this time.

Tyler Duffey Blows Save, Tagged With The Loss Saturday

Minnesota Twins pitcher Tyler Duffey allowed two runs on three hits while striking out one over one inning in Saturday's 4-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners. The right-hander was charged with a blown save and tagged with the loss. He surrendered a two-out double to Adam Frazier that plated Julio Rodrguez as the game-tying run. Ty France laced an RBI single off Duffey to give the Mariners the lead. The 31-year-old was given the first save opportunity of the season after the Twins dealt incumbent closer Taylor Rogers to the San Diego Padres on Opening Day. Duffey was solid in 2021, posting a 3.18 ERA, 1.22 WHIP, and 61:28 K: BB over 62 1/3 innings. Despite the blown save, the right-hander will still be in the mix for saves along with Jorge Alcala and recently acquired Emilio Pagan.

Tyler Duffey Records Third Save

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey notched his third save of the season in Wednesday's 3-0 win over the Indians. With Alex Colome unavailable, Duffey worked the ninth, firing 12 of 17 pitches for strikes while recording a pair of punchouts. The right-hander had his curveball working well, as it accounted for all five of his whiffs. Duffey has been plagued by control issues at times this season, though he has managed to get the walks under control lately, posting a superb 15:4 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 11 innings pitched since the start of August. With four holds and a save in that span, Duffey may be helpful to fantasy managers in need of help at the reliever spot down the stretch.

Tyler Duffey Strikes Out Two For Second Straight Outing

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey put together an effective outing once again in Friday's 5-4 win over the Astros. Duffey worked the seventh inning, allowing two hits but striking out a pair for his second straight scoreless appearance. The right-hander has had about as inconsistent a season as possible, seemingly pitching well every other month, though August certainly seems to be treating him well so far. Duffey's strikeout rate has dipped to 20.2 percent after he posted rates above 33 percent each of the last two seasons, perhaps one of the main reasons consistency has evaded him.

Tyler Duffey Records Second Save

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey notched his second save of the season In Friday's 7-5 win over the Texas Rangers. Manager Rocco Baldelli utilized each of Taylor Rogers and Hansel Robles before the ninth, so he turned to Duffey to lock down the victory in the 10th. The 30-year-old righty allowed the auto-runner to score on an RBI single but ultimately worked out of the frame, picking up a strikeout in the process. Despite the effort, Duffey owns an uninspiring 4.15 ERA and 1.38 WHIP, backed up by 4.79 expected ERA and a .341 expected wOBA, suggesting that things may not get much better for him the rest of the way.

Tyler Duffey Picks Up Save

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey notched his first save of the season in Sunday's 8-5 victory over the Cleveland Indians in extra innings Sunday. Duffey allowed one walk but fanned two batters to lock down the win for Minnesota. The veteran reliever has now pitched two scoreless frames since allowing three runs to the Los Angeles Angels on May 20. Duffey has a pretty grim-looking Statcast page, though the most concerning trends are his massive decrease in strikeout rate and increase in barrel rate. Duffey could be in line for more saves if his fellow high-leverage relievers continue to put up shaky performances, though he is tough to rely on for fantasy purposes in 2021.

Tyler Duffey Has Suspension Reduced

Minnesota Twins relief pitcher Tyler Duffey had his two-game suspension reduced from three games to two. Duffey was suspended for intentionally throwing behind Yermin Mercedes of the Chicago White Sox during Tuesday's game. The 30-year-old reliever will begin serving his suspension during the second game of the doubleheader against the Los Angeles Angels Thursday night. Duffey has allowed 11 runs in 15 innings this year and is firmly off the fantasy radar.
