San Francisco Giants catcher/infielder Yermin Mercedes has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento. Infielder Thairo Estrada was reinstated from the 7-day concussion injured list so Mercedes was sent down to make room. The 29-year-old Mercedes put together a .243/.338/.357 batting line to go along with one home run and eight RBI across 70 at-bats with the Giants. He could get recalled again at some point down the stretch.
San Francisco Giants utility man Yermin Mercedes had a nice game at the plate in Tuesday's 13-0 win over the Diamondbacks. Mercedes went 3-for-4 with a single, a double, a two-run home run, four RBI, and a walk. The 29-year-old has had just 31 plate appearances with the Giants so far this season but has slashed an impressive .296/.387/.519 while seeing time at catcher, designated hitter, first base, and the outfield. It remains to be seen what Mercedes' role will be with the Giants and if he will earn enough playing time to garner fantasy attention, but his exciting stint with the White Sox last season makes him worth an add to fantasy managers' watch lists for now.
Thairo Estrada To COVID Injured List, Yermin Mercedes Recalled
The San Francisco Giants placed second baseman Thairo Estrada (illness) on the COVID-19 injured list on Sunday. He is dealing with a sore throat and a headache, but he hasn't tested positive for COVID-19. To fill his roster spot, the team recalled Yermin Mercedes from Triple-A. Estrada has been a mainstay in the Giants' lineup this year. Over 70 games, he's slashed .256/.311/.386 with six home runs, 11 stolen bases, 31 RBI and 40 runs. Mercedes, meanwhile, was claimed off waivers by the Giants about two weeks back. He had a brief stint with the Giants, making two appearances, prior to being sent to Triple-A. This will be his second stint with the team and there's a good chance it's another short one.
Yermin Mercedes Called Up, Brandon Crawford To Injured List
The San Francisco Giants have called up catcher/designated hitter Yermin Mercedes from Triple-A. In a corresponding move, shortstop Brandon Crawford (knee) was placed on the 10-day injured list, a move that is retroactive to June 25. Mercedes was claimed off waivers by the Giants a little over a week ago. He is known for being a lefty masher and we all know how the Giants enjoy their split-heavy bats. He is not in the starting lineup against Cincinnati Reds right-hander Tyler Mahle on Sunday. The team has Monday off, but we may see Mercedes in the starting lineup against Detroit Tigers southpaw Tarik Skubal on Tuesday. Crawford, meanwhile, suffered a left knee injury this past Tuesday and only played in one game this week after the injury.
Designated hitter/catcher Yermin Mercedes was claimed off waivers by the San Francisco Giants on Saturday. Mercedes won rookie of the month in April of 2021, but hasn't been able to find that form since. In triple-A this season, Mercedes slashed .230/.376/.425 with four homers in 87 at-bats. The 29-year-old smashes left-handed pitching, and the Giants are known to use players in platoon roles, so there is a chance that he puts up some decent numbers. That being said, he will likely have very limited fantasy potential and should only be picked up in deep daily leagues where he can be put into and taken out of the lineup based on when he plays.
The Chicago White Sox designated outfielder/designated hitter Yermin Mercedes for assignment on Sunday amid a flurry of roster moves. The team also placed left-hander Aaron Bummer (lat) on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain, optioned right-hander Davis Martin to Triple-A Charlotte, recalled left-hander Tanner Banks from Charlotte and selected the contract of catcher Seby Zavala from Charlotte. Mercedes, an early season sensation last year, was hitting just .230/.376/.425 with four home runs, 13 RBI, 14 runs scored and five stolen bases in 25 games for the White Sox. If he's not picked up by another team, he could return to the White Sox and return to Charlotte.
Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yermin Mercedes suffered a hamate fracture in his left hand and will undergo a CT scan on Monday, according to James Fegan of The Athletic. He will miss six to eight weeks with the ailment. Mercedes caught the league by storm at the beginning of last season, hitting .415 with a 1.113 OPS over his first 22 games. However, he cooled down drastically afterwards and was demoted in early July. The long-time minor leaguer finished with a .271/.328/.404 slash line in 68 games. The White Sox roster is loaded with talent, so even before the injury, it would've been difficult for manager Tony La Russa to give him consistent playing time. Fantasy managers shouldn't be drafting him in any format at this point.
Chicago White Sox outfielder Yermin Mercedes is on the active roster for Triple-A Charlotte and is in uniform for their game on Thursday after writing on his personal Instagram page on Wednesday that he was walking away from baseball permanently. It's unclear what is exactly going on with Mercedes, but for now, he remains with the organization and is hitting a nice .298/.365/.632 with four home runs and 10 RBI in 15 games since being sent down earlier in the season. The 28-year-old was a sensation in the first month of the season in his first real taste of major league pitching, but he cooled off and was sent down to the minors for more seasoning. He hit .271 with seven home runs and 37 RBI in 262 plate appearances earlier this year. There's a chance he could be back up with the team in the second half if he decides to stick with baseball, but he won't be guaranteed regular playing time on a stacked White Sox team.
Chicago White Sox designated hitter Yermin Mercedes announced on his personal Instagram that he's retiring from baseball. "I am stepping away from baseball for a while, and it's over." If this is the end of his career, the 28-year-old finished his career slashing .271/.328/.404 with seven home runs, 37 RBI, and 26 runs scored across 262 plate appearances in 2021. Mercedes was demoted to Triple-A Charlotte in early July and played well, slashing .309/.377/.655 with four homers and 10 RBI. The White Sox said they are aware of Yermn Mercedes' Instagram post, but have not received any official notice from Mercedes of his plans and that he's still part of the active roster at Class AAA Charlotte, per James Fegan of the Athletic. Mercedes announced he was stepping away from baseball right after being pinch-hit for in the sixth inning. Stay tuned for any further updates.
The Chicago White Sox optioned catcher/designated hitter Yermin Mercedes and right-hander Zack Burdi to Triple-A Charlotte on Friday and activated outfielder Adam Eaton (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Mercedes was the talk of baseball in the first month of the season when he had a 1.113 OPS and five home runs. However, he's recorded a .537 OPS and just two home runs since and will head to the minors to make some adjustments. Fantasy managers in keeper/dynasty leagues should hang onto him. Eaton has been out for several weeks with a right hamstring strain. The veteran outfielder is slashing just .195/.296/.345 with five home runs, 27 RBI and two steals in 203 plate appearances. Eaton is pretty mediocre across the board in most fantasy categories and will mostly be an option in AL-only setups.
