As the San Francisco 49ers' only healthy quarterback, Adrian Martinez could see his first regular season snaps in the NFL on Sunday. Brock Purdy (toe) will be shelved for a fourth game thanks to his ongoing bout with turf toe, and backup Mac Jones (knee, oblique) is listed as questionable for Week 6 with injuries of his own. Jones has been playing through a knee injury suffered in the preseason and injured his oblique at the end of last Thursday's 26-23 win over the Rams. Jones is expected to play, but if he cannot go on Sunday, Martinez would draw the start against the Buccaneers. Even if that were the case, he should be avoided in fantasy contests. On top of his inexperience, the 49ers might be without their top two wide receivers as Ricky Pearsall (knee) is already listed as out and Jauan Jennings (ankle, ribs) is questionable for Week 6.

Martinez was signed to the 49ers practice squad after failing to make the New York Jets initial 53-man roster. He wasn't expected to be anything more than a third or fourth string depth option. However, the 49ers are going to be without Brock Purdy (shoulder) and Kurtis Rourke (knee) for Sunday's game. That being said, Martinez will head to the active roster and be the backup to Mac Jones. There isn't fantasy value here with Martinez right now, but he's a name to watch if something happens to Jones.

The Jets decided to only carry two quarterbacks with Justin Fields and Tyrod Taylor. Martinez was decent in the preseason, completing 30 of 51 passing attempts for 352 passing yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. The 25-year-old will serve as depth behind Brock Purdy and Mac Jones. There is no reason to stash Martinez at the moment in fantasy leagues.

Martinez, who went undrafted out of Nebraska in 2023, spent last season on the Jets' practice squad and competed for a roster spot this summer. The 25-year-old played in all three of the Jets' preseason games and went 30-for-51 (58.8%) for 352 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. Starter Justin Fields and undrafted rookie Brady Cook are now the Jets' only healthy signal-callers. However, No. 2 QB Tyrod Taylor (knee) is on track for Week 1 after recently undergoing arthroscopic knee surgery.

The New York Jets signed quarterback Adrian Martinez and cornerback Kendall Sheffield on Saturday and released cornerback Nehemiah Shelton and quarterback Ben Bryant in corresponding moves. Martinez went undrafted out of Kansas State and was waived by the Detroit Lions back in late August of last year. The 24-year-old has yet to appear in an NFL game and will now look to make some noise as QB depth for the Jets this summer in training camp and the preseason. Martinez will be a long shot to make the active roster out of camp, but there's a chance he could stick around on the practice squad if he impresses. Behind Aaron Rodgers at the position, the Jets now have Martinez, Tyrod Taylor and rookies Jordan Travis and Andrew Peasley.
