Mac Jones News
New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones seems pleased with the team's offensive process this offseason under new offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien after the offense was a disaster in his second NFL season in 2022. "It's been really good. It's been normal," Jones said. "I think everything he's done so far has been really good." Jones helped teach O'Brien Alabama's playbook upon his arrival in 2021, so the two have history together. With Joe Judge and Matt Patricia running the offense last year, the 24-year-old Jones struggled, completing 65.2% of his passes for 2,997 yards, 14 TDs and 11 picks in 14 starts. There's reason to be optimistic for a bounce-back with O'Brien now in the picture, though, but it doesn't mean Jones should be drafted in standard single-QB fantasy leagues in 2023.
New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said over the weekend that he "absolutely" has the same confidence that he had in quarterback Mac Jones a year ago. It's good news for both parties after the two sides look to turn the page after a frustrating season on offense in 2022. Jones will receive a lot more coaching from offensive coordinator Bill O'Brien in 2023, and if he bounces back, he'll be back on track as the franchise signal-caller. Bailey Zappe said he's ready to take over if needed, but it would be a pretty big surprise if he were to beat out Jones in training camp this summer. The 24-year-old Jones is working hard to improve heading into his third season, which could be a make or break year. For now, fantasy managers should consider him a low-end QB2.
New England Patriots quarterback Mac Jones was throwing to pass catchers on Tuesday, including new acquisition Mike Gesicki and Tyquan Thornton, among others. Jones, lauded for his work ethic by head coach Bill Belichick in the past, appears to be diligently getting a head start on offseason workouts, with trade rumors involving his name swirling around the league. After a promising Pro Bowl campaign as a rookie, the 24-year-old took a step back in 2022, even ceding signal-calling duties to Bailey Zappe at one point before eventually reclaiming his mantle. New England picks 14th overall in the 2023 draft, which is unlikely to snag them any of the consensus top-four quarterback prospects. Even with the Patriots supposedly out of the Lamar Jackson sweepstakes, Jones is still likely to be mostly off the radar in shallow redraft fantasy leagues, no matter where the field general is taking snaps in 2023.
