49ers Want First-Round Pick for Mac Jones?

The San Francisco 49ers aren't financially motivated to move backup quarterback Mac Jones, who played at a high level in eight starts last year while filling in for an injured Brock Purdy. Jones also has a $3.07 million salary cap hit, and Purdy has missed time with injuries in all four of his seasons. However, it might be hard for the Niners to resist turning a budget-friendly free-agent pickup into a second-round pick. The Athletic's Jeff Howe suggests that San Fran "could rightfully be stubborn and hold out for a first-round offer." If a team strikes out in free agency and the NFL draft, it could circle back with the 49ers on Jones. The 49ers will likely only deal Jones if they receive an offer they can't refuse, and it's hard to imagine anyone offering a first-rounder for Jones, even if he did play well in 2025. With so many veteran QB options likely to be floating around on the open market this offseason, Jones' trade market right now isn't very strong.

Mac Jones Not Attracting Much Trade Interest Thus Far

The Athletic's Matt Barrows and Vic Tafur say that San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones doesn't have a very robust market so far this offseason. The 49ers also aren't looking to trade Jones, with general manager John Lynch saying last week that "we're a better team with him on it." The 27-year-old was expected to attract an offer of at least a third-rounder after playing well in Brock Purdy's absence last year. The Minnesota Vikings and other teams that could need a QB "weren't so open" to the idea of Jones. Other teams expected to be in the market for a signal-caller this offseason include the Miami Dolphins, New York Jets, and maybe the Atlanta Falcons. All of them could prefer a dirt-cheap option this year over trading for Jones and signing him to an extension. Jones completed 70% of his passes in eight starts (five wins) in 2025, but "there are still some skeptics." In addition to Jones, QBs like Anthony Richardson Sr., Kyler Murray, Geno Smith, Kirk Cousins, and Tua Tagovailoa can all be had via either a trade or on the open market.

49ers Would Need to be Blown Away to Consider Trading Mac Jones

San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch reiterated the team's desire to keep backup quarterback Mac Jones at the NFL scouting combine on Tuesday, according to Nick Wagoner of ESPN. "He's really good for us, and we value that. And so somebody would have to come with something fairly strong for us to consider (trading him). And then I don't know what we do. Obviously, there's always something that would make you (do it), but I think we're a better team with him on it and we just like having him around," Lynch said. The 27-year-old signed a two-year, $8.41 million deal with San Fran in March of last year and ended up playing in 11 games (eight starts) with Brock Purdy missing a good chunk of the season with a turf-toe injury. Jones played well, too, throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six picks while going 5-3. QB-needy teams will come calling, but it sounds like the Niners will need to be blown away by a trade offer to even consider dealing him.

Mac Jones a Trade Candidate for Vikings?

The Minnesota Vikings could be looking to trade for a quarterback this offseason after former first-rounder J.J. McCarthy struggled with injuries and ineffectiveness in his first full year as the starter. The Athletic's Alec Lewis writes that "there is perhaps no candidate who checks more boxes for what the Vikings are looking for than San Francisco 49ers QB Mac Jones." There are a lot of things that could attract the Vikings' front office and head coach Kevin O'Connell. The 27-year-old is a former first-rounder, comes from a Kyle Shanahan offense, and pushes the ball over the middle of the field. He's still under contract with San Fran for another year, but his guaranteed salary for 2026 is only $1 million. The biggest obstacle to Jones potentially landing in Minnesota is the 49ers driving a "hard bargain" for him after he had a solid season filling in for the injured Brock Purdy. To land Jones, the Vikes might have to make the Niners an offer they can't refuse.

Mac Jones' Trade Market Expected to be "Robust"

The San Francisco 49ers continue to say that they plan to hold onto quarterback Mac Jones, who signed a two-year, $8.41 million contract in March of last year. The Athletic's Matt Barrows thinks the trade market for Jones this offseason "will be robust," and "there's a good chance they'll get an offer they can't refuse." Jones displayed excellent processing skills in 2025 and is well-liked in the Niners' locker room. The 27-year-old former first-round pick (15th overall) by the New England Patriots in 2021 out of Alabama kept San Fran's season afloat in 2025 when Brock Purdy was injured, going 5-3 as a starter and throwing for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions in 11 games played (eight starts). With Sam Darnold as an example, some NFL teams looking for a QB could decide to take a chance on Jones instead of risk a draft pick on a young signal-caller.

49ers Not Looking to Trade Mac Jones

The San Francisco 49ers are not looking to trade backup quarterback Mac Jones this offseason, per Dianna Russini of The Athletic. Russini reports that while "things and offers could change," 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan "loves what he has" in Jones. With San Francisco starter Brock Purdy missing eight games in 2025 due to injury, Jones played a critical role in keeping the 49ers' season afloat. Across his eight starts, the 27-year-old threw for 2,147 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions. Jones averaged 7.4 yards per pass attempt in 2025, his first time clearing 6.8 yards per attempt since his 2021 rookie season with the New England Patriots. San Francisco signed Jones to a two-year contract last offseason, so the team could easily decide to keep him until he reaches free agency after the 2026 season. However, if a quarterback-needy team views Jones as a potential long-term solution, it might make the 49ers an offer that is too good to pass up.

49ers Want to Keep Mac Jones Around

Both San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan and general manager John Lynch seem intent on keeping quarterback Mac Jones around going into next season as the backup for Brock Purdy, according to Cam Inman of the Bay Area News Group. "We're not into getting rid of good players. I'd be surprised if he's not here next year," Shanahan said. "Mac made this place better and picked us up in a huge way ... Can't say enough about his play but also his leadership," Lynch said. The 27-year-old kept the 49ers afloat in 2025 with Purdy missing a chunk of time due to a turf-toe injury. He was in the first year of a two-year, $8.4 million contract, and all signs point to Jones returning in 2026 as one of the better backup QBs in the league. As a starter for the Niners this year, Jones went 5-3 while completing 69.6% of his passes for 2,151 yards, 13 touchdowns, and six interceptions.

Mac Jones Emerges as Trade Candidate for 2026

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones will head back to the bench ahead of the Week 11 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. Jones has started in each of the last six games while Brock Purdy (toe) was sidelined. Now, Purdy is ready to play, so Jones will return to being the backup. However, Jones was impressive during his time as the starter. He threw for 2,151 yards with 13 touchdowns and six interceptions in eight games. It sounds like this solid play has made him a prime trade candidate for the 2026 season. Jones is still under control with the organization after signing a two-year, seven million deal with the organization this offseason. Purdy is viewed as the franchise quarterback in San Francisco, so moving Jones makes sense. Given his play this season, Jones should draw some interest in the trade market. This is something to monitor during the offseason.

Mac Jones Throws Three Touchdowns in Loss

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones has been able to make the most of this starting opportunity while Brock Purdy (toe) is sidelined. On Sunday, Jones did everything he could to help his team win, but unfortunately it wasn't enough. He completed 33-of-39 passing attempts for 319 yards with three touchdowns and one interception in the loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Jones made some mistakes as well, but he also posted his third 300-plus yard passing game of the season. It's unclear if Purdy will be ready to start for the Week 11 matchup against the San Francisco 49ers. If not, Jones should be viewed as a streaming option for that one.

Mac Jones Getting Another Go At The Rams In Week 10

San Francisco 49ers quarterback Mac Jones (knee) is expected to draw his eighth start of the season in Week 10 against the Los Angeles Rams. Brock Purdy (toe) is listed as questionable after a week of limited practices, and would serve as Jones' backup if active. The last time Jones faced the Rams, he enjoyed his best game of the season, passing for 342 yards and two touchdowns with no turnovers, and did so with Ricky Pearsall (knee), Jauan Jennings (ankle, shoulder), and George Kittle out due to injury. It was an exceptional lapse for the Rams' defense, which has given up just nine passing touchdowns and has allowed only one other top-12 finish to an opposing quarterback this season. This time around, Jones will still be missing Pearsall but has Jennings and Kittle back in his arsenal. Jones projects as a mid-range QB2, making him viable in two-QB formats.
