Jacob Cowing Placed on Injured Reserve

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) was placed on the Injured Reserve list on Wednesday, guaranteeing that he will miss at least the first four games of the season. Cowing was battling a hamstring injury for most of training camp and suffered a major setback while trying to return for the team's final preseason game. 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan provided a six-week return timeline for Cowing, making his IR placement an easy decision. The 24-year-old would have had a chance to make an early-season impact had he been able to stay healthy, as the 49ers' wide receiver room has been besieged by injuries behind WR1 Ricky Pearsall. With the delayed start, Cowing should be off the radar of fantasy managers for the time being. However, he could be an under-the-radar midseason pickup, depending on the status of currently sidelined 49ers wideouts Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Jauan Jennings (calf).

Jacob Cowing Could Miss up to Six Weeks

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan reports that wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) could miss up to six weeks with a hamstring injury he suffered last week during practice. The second-year pro will likely open up the season on injured reserve. San Francisco's pass-catching corps is reeling with yet another significant injury to one of their wideouts. With the news regarding Cowing, it could very well be teammates Ricky Pearsall and Skyy Moore lining up in two-wide sets, depending on whether Jauan Jennings (calf) will be good to go for their season-opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Moore is a newly acquired asset for the team, but it isn't out of the question that they might seek more help in that regard. Fantasy managers can expect Pearsall, tight end George Kittle, and running back Christian McCaffrey to be slated for a heavy load of touches if this situation doesn't improve.

Jacob Cowing Misses Practice With Lower-Body Injury

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (lower body) did not practice on Wednesday after he appeared to suffer a lower-body injury in Tuesday's practice, per Matt Maiocco of NBC Sports Bay Area. It's unclear how serious Cowing's injury is at this time. Injuries have been the story of Cowing's career in the NFL to this point. The 24-year-old suffered a hamstring injury in the first training camp practice at the end of July that kept him out for almost three weeks. If his new injury is related to his hamstring, there's a good chance he won't be ready for the start of the regular season in Week 1 on Sunday, Sept. 7, against the division-rival Seattle Seahawks. It's yet another injury for a banged-up Niners receivers room, as Jauan Jennings (calf), Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Jordan Watkins (ankle) are all out. Cowing can be ignored in standard-sized fantasy leagues this fall.

Jacob Cowing Returns to Practice

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) returned to practice on Tuesday, Nick Wagoner of ESPN reports. Cowing, who suffered a hamstring injury on the first day of camp, did individual work and mixed in some team snaps in his first practice back. The 5-foot-9, 171-pounder appeared in 15 games as a fourth-round rookie last year and caught a mere four passes for 80 yards. However, he garnered praise from head coach Kyle Shanahan during minicamp, and there was talk of Cowing helping to replace the departed Deebo Samuel Sr. in a gadget role. Now, there may be a path to more opportunities with the 49ers facing issues at the receiver position. Brandon Aiyuk (knee) will miss the first several weeks of the regular season, Jordan Watkins (ankle) is out for a month, and Jauan Jennings (calf) is also banged up. Additionally, Demarcus Robinson is staring at a potential suspension from a 2024 misdemeanor DUI charge.

Jacob Cowing Expected to Return to Practice on Tuesday

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) is expected to return to practice on Tuesday, according to David Lombardi of the SF Standard. Cowing has been nursing a hamstring injury that he suffered a few weeks ago, but he looks set to return to the practice field before the second preseason game. The 49ers receiver room has been dealing with multiple injuries, including Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk, and most recently, rookie Jordan Watkins. Cowing had an uneventful rookie season but had gaudy production during college and has an opportunity to emerge. He won't be on many fantasy radars in drafts, but he could be a name to keep in mind as the season gets closer.

Jacob Cowing Pulls Hamstring During Wednesday's Practice

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing (hamstring) suffered a pulled hamstring during Wednesday's training camp practice, according to head coach Kyle Shanahan. The second-year wideout out of Arizona had a strong spring and is looking to earn a role in 2025, so this is obviously a tough development. However, it is unclear how much practice time Cowing will be forced to sit out, so fantasy managers in deep leagues should monitor the situation. The 2024 fourth-round pick was limited to just four receptions for 80 yards last season in 15 games, but he is a candidate to fill a "gadget" role left behind by Deebo Samuel Sr., who was traded to the Washington Commanders this offseason. With Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) sidelined to begin camp, depth is becoming a concern for the San Fran WR room.

Jacob Cowing Could Handle Gadget Role in San Francisco

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing had a quiet rookie season after being selected in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft out of Arizona. The 24-year-old produced just four receptions for 80 yards and rushed once for seven yards. Otherwise, he did the majority of his work as a punt returner. Entering 2025, Deebo Samuel Sr. is now with the Washington Commanders, and Brandon Aiyuk (knee) is likely to miss the start of the new campaign. According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, Cowing has a chance to earn touches in Kyle Shanahan's offense. "[Cowing] could take a lot of the departed Deebo Samuel's gadget plays. The 49ers like his toughness, speed, and nose for yards after the catch," Tafur wrote. "Cowing added more weight in the offseason to his once 168-pound frame to handle sweeps and other running plays. He looked sharp at offseason workouts and, with Brandon Aiyuk still sidelined, could carve out an important role at training camp." Add in the fact that Jauan Jennings has requested a new deal or to be traded, and Cowing is now slightly on the fantasy football radar. That said, he's more of a deep-league flier or best ball dart throw. For now, he should be left on the waiver wire in traditional 12-team setups.

Jacob Cowing on the Rise

The Athletic's Matt Barrows writes that one of the themes among coaches and players this spring was that nobody took better advantage of the offseason than San Francisco 49ers second-year wide receiver Jacob Cowing. The 24-year-old was selected 135th overall (fourth round) last year but had a minimal role, catching just four passes for 80 yards in 15 games (zero starts). However, he trained with quarterback Brock Purdy and receiver Ricky Pearsall (hamstring) early in the offseason and had a prominent role during spring practices. It helped that Pearsall, Brandon Aiyuk (knee) and Jauan Jennings (calf) were sidelined, but it's notable nonetheless. Cowing has great speed and is doing a better job of maintaining it throughout his cuts and breaks. He's good with the ball in his hands and could be a nice little gadget player in 2025, although it's unlikely to amount to much fantasy value.

Jacob Cowing Adds Weight, Could Have Bigger Role

San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle recently said he was impressed that wide receiver Jacob Cowing, who weighed 168 pounds at last year's scouting combine, added more weight in the offseason. Cowing also trained with quarterback Brock Purdy in Jacksonville and Arizona this offseason, signaling he wasn't happy with a 2024 rookie season in which he was used sparingly on offense. The 24-year-old only caught four passes last year, but The Athletic's Matt Barrows thinks he should be an asset on quick-hitters and jet sweeps that went to Deebo Samuel Sr. in recent years. The former fourth-rounder (135th overall) out of Arizona could have a bigger role early in the 2025 season with Brandon Aiyuk (knee) rehabbing an injury and Demarcus Robinson facing a potential suspension, but for now, Cowing will just be one to keep an eye on during training camp.

Jacob Cowing Due For More Work Vs. Arizona

San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Jacob Cowing will see an uptick in snaps this Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals in a road tilt. The rookie has been used sparingly in 2024 -- recording just two receptions and 50 yards in 11 appearances. However, he projects to see an elevated role in the offense with fellow wideout Deebo Samuel Sr. (rib, wrist) ruled inactive for the contest. Cowing has managed only 56 snaps in his debut campaign but was productive during his time at college -- breaking out in his third season with UTEP (104.2 YPG) before transferring to Arizona and notching two 85+ catch seasons. With QB Brock Purdy (elbow) set to sit, Joshua Dobbs will man the 49ers helm, so it isn't ideal for the 23-year-old wideout. Still, tight end George Kittle (ankle) is also dealing with an injury and is questionable for the matchup. Cowing could have a busy day in the team's season finale if Kittle sits. Though, he still won't be a recommended option. The former fourth-round pick comes in at RotoBaller's PPR WR87 in this week's rankings.
