49ers Making Headway With Trent Williams on Potential Extension

A contract extension for San Francisco 49ers All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams could be imminent, according to general manager John Lynch. "I would say in the last week, it's kind of intensified," Lynch said at the NFL owners' meetings. "And feel like we're on the precipice of something good happening." There were several reports in the last month that the 49ers could end up trading or releasing Williams if they couldn't agree to terms on a new deal. Lynch hasn't qualified the negotiations with Williams' camp as contentious at all, but said the situation required "nuance" because of his age (37). Despite his age, the former first-rounder (fourth overall) by Washington in 2010 out of Oklahoma has been a 12-time Pro Bowler and three-time first-team All-Pro in his 15 years in the league. Williams is still a high-end left tackle, so locking him up for what will likely be his final contract in the NFL will be a big boost for quarterback Brock Purdy and the rest of head coach Kyle Shanahan's offense.

49ers Decline to Pick Up Trent Williams' $10 Million Option Bonus

The San Francisco 49ers did not pick up All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams' $10 million option bonus on Friday, which would have prorated over four years against the salary cap, according to David Lombardi of The San Francisco Standard. Instead, the money joins Williams' $22 million base salary for the 2026 season, and his new salary cap hit becomes $46.3 million. It's not tied to any guaranteed money, and his cap hit is expected to be reduced while the two sides continue to work on a new contract. The 37-year-old former fourth overall pick remains one of the league's best left tackles despite his age. Williams is a 12-time Pro Bowler and a three-time All-Pro. The 49ers certainly want to retain him to protect quarterback Brock Purdy's blind side, but they are also aware that he's no spring chicken anymore and is nearing the end of his career.

Vederian Lowe isn't a Replacement for Trent Williams in San Francisco

The San Francisco 49ers added former New England Patriots swing tackle Vederian Lowe in free agency for two years and $12 million. Lowe is "not a replacement" for Trent Williams, though, according to Vic Tafur and Matt Barrows of The Athletic. The 6-foot-5, 315-pounder started four games at left tackle last season for New England and has 25 starts in the last three seasons. Williams continues to butt heads with the 49ers on his contract, which is scheduled to count $38 million against the 2026 salary cap. The 49ers must figure out what to do with Williams before March 20, when he's due a $10 million option bonus. There's a chance the 49ers opt to trade him, but only then would Lowe be a potential starter at left tackle for San Francisco. The Williams situation is one to watch, as it could drastically impact their O-line and quarterback Brock Purdy.

49ers Open to Trading Trent Williams?

The San Francisco 49ers are now said to be open to trading Pro Bowl left tackle Trent Williams if "the situation doesn't get resolved," sources told Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Williams is due $32 million in salary in 2026 and carries a $38 million salary cap number. If the 49ers were to trade the 37-year-old veteran, it would free up around $5 million of cap space this year. General manager John Lynch expressed optimism in late February that the two sides would be able to work something out. He carries three void years on his contract beyond this year with no guaranteed money. The Niners are likely hesitant to give Williams too much on a new extension. He's still one of the top left tackles in the game, but his advanced age suggests a decline is likely coming soon. If Williams is traded, it would be a pretty notable downgrade for quarterback Brock Purdy and the rest of San Fran's offense.

49ers Optimistic They'll Reach a Deal With Trent Williams

Sources told ESPN's Adam Schefter on Tuesday that the San Francisco 49ers and All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams are "struggling to find a contractual situation." General manager John Lynch told reporters at the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday that the team has had "productive" meetings with Williams' representation recently, and the team is "optimistic" that they'll be able to work something out. The 37-year-old veteran is entering the final year of a three-year, $82.66 million restructured deal he signed with the team in September of 2024 and carries a salary cap number of $38.84 million in 2026, which includes a base salary of $22.21 million. He also has a $10 million option bonus due in the coming weeks. Williams' current contract includes no more guaranteed money as of Tuesday and contains three void years remaining beyond this year. He held out for more than a month in training camp back in 2024 before inking an extension, so this might not be a simple restructure. Williams is still an above-average left tackle, but he's entering his age-38 campaign in 2026.

Trent Williams to be Released by 49ers?

San Francisco 49ers five-time All-Pro left tackle Trent Williams is scheduled to carry a $39 million salary cap number this year, and he and the team are currently "struggling to find a contractual situation," league sources told Adam Schefter of ESPN. Schefter adds that if the two sides can't bridge their differences in the contract standoff, the 49ers are expected to release the 37-year-old veteran, which would make him "one of the premier players available" in free agency this offseason. He's entering the final year of the three-year, $82.66 million restructured contract he signed with the Niners in September of 2024. The fourth overall pick by Washington in 2010 out of Oklahoma isn't getting any younger, and injuries have become more of an issue for him in recent years. Williams will still have suitors if he makes it to free agency, but going into his 16th NFL campaign, it's fair to wonder how much longer he can keep up his Pro Bowl form.

Trent Williams Officially Active for Wild-Card Round

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) is officially active for his team's Wild Card round matchup against the Philadelphia Eagles. Williams missed his team's regular-season finale against the Seattle Seahawks due to a hamstring injury and entered the weekend listed as questionable to play against Philadelphia. Pro Football Focus graded Williams as the third-best tackle in the NFL out of 89 qualified players at the position for his work in the regular season. His absence against Seattle was a big part of the reason why San Francisco scored just three points in Week 18 after averaging over 40 points per game from Weeks 15 through 17. With Williams back in the lineup, fantasy managers should feel comfortable upgrading the outlooks for 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, running back Christian McCaffrey, and tight end George Kittle.

Trent Williams Trending Toward a Playoff Return

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) was a limited practice participant on Thursday and Friday, but the belief is that he is trending in the right direction and has a chance to suit up for Sunday's Wild Card matchup with the Eagles. The future Hall of Famer has been held out of the last two games after injuring his hamstring in a Week 16 win over the Colts. Even with their best offensive lineman sidelined in Week 17, the 49ers managed to put up 200 yards on the ground in a win over the Bears before coming back down to earth to the tune of 53 rushing yards in a Week 18 loss to the Seahawks. Without question, San Francisco's rushing attack is at its best when both Williams and tight end George Kittle are active, which looks to be the case for Sunday, helping to make Christian McCaffrey RotoBaller's RB1 for the first week of playoff fantasy leagues.

Trent Williams "Up in the Air" to Play on Saturday

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) is up in the air to play in Saturday's divisional matchup against the Seattle Seahawks, ESPN's Jeremy Fowler reports. Williams missed every day in practice this week, and they will see how he feels in pre-game warmups. The star tackle should be good to go for the playoffs, but he is on the outside looking in to suit up for the regular-season finale. The 12-time Pro Bowler tweaked his hamstring during last week's win over the Chicago Bears, and it will be tough for him to play with no practice on a short week. Backup tackle Austin Pleasants is in line to make his first career start on Saturday, with the top seed in the NFC on the line.

Trent Williams Questionable to Return with Hamstring Injury

San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams (hamstring) exited during the first quarter of Sunday Night Football against the Chicago Bears in Week 17. He is officially listed as questionable to return. Williams had only missed 13 snaps during the 2025 season prior to Week 17. He is widely regarded as one of the best offensive linemen in NFL history, so the 49ers will hope his absence is brief. Similarly, fantasy managers who roster Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey will hope that Williams can get back into the game very soon. In the meantime, Austin Pleasants will take over at left tackle, protecting Purdy's blindside.
