The Miami Dolphins have signed former Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. following an injury to Chris Brooks (concussion), who has entered concussion protocol after Saturday's game against the Washington Commanders. The Dolphins struggle for healthy running back depth beyond Raheem Mostert and De'Von Achane. They even had a wide receiver filling in at running back for much of the second half, with Jaylen Wright (undisclosed) also held out due to injury. McFarland, 26, joins Miami, hoping to finally establish himself in the NFL. Drafted by the Steelers in the fourth round of the 2020 NFL Draft from the University of Maryland, McFarland was known for his speed and agility. His rookie season was his most productive, with 33 carries for 113 yards and six receptions for 54 yards. However, his subsequent seasons were marred by injuries, limiting his production and keeping him on injured reserve for significant time. McFarland's tenure with the Steelers included a stint on injured reserve at the start of the 2021 season and another knee injury that sidelined him for most of the 2023 season. Now, with the Dolphins, McFarland can prove himself again.
Anthony McFarland Jr. Leads All Rushers In Preseason Win
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. handled 10 carries for 55 yards and a touchdown in the team's preseason victory over the Atlanta Falcons. McFarland relieved Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren of their duties in the first quarter and received plenty of opportunities in the first half. The fourth-year pro powered through multiple Falcons defenders for a five-yard score in the second quarter that gave the Steelers a 24-0 lead. After an impressive summer, McFarland has given himself a great shot to make the final 53-man roster but is unlikely to make an impact for fantasy football in 2023.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. handled three carries for 18 yards and a touchdown as well as one reception for five yards in a 27-17 preseason victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. McFarland took over for Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren after Pittsburgh's first offensive drive and displayed impressive burst on his 14-yard score in the second quarter. The 25-year-old is unlikely to carve out a significant role for himself this season but has been performing well in camp and seems to have a hold on the team's RB3 spot. McFarland will remain off of the fantasy radar as long as Harris and Warren are healthy.
Anthony McFarland Jr. Goes For 41 All-Purpose Yards In Week 12
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. carried the ball six times for 30 yards and added 11 yards on two catches in a 24-17 win over the Indianapolis Colts in Week 12. McFarland received his first touches of the season with Jaylen Warren (hamstring) inactive and Najee Harris leaving with an abdominal injury late in the first quarter. The third-year running back could have a role in Week 13 against the Atlanta Falcons if Harris and/or Warren were unable to play, although it is apparent that McFarland is behind Benny Snell Jr. in the pecking order in the Pittsburgh backfield.
Anthony McFarland Jr. Designated To Return From Injured Reserve
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. (knee) has been designated to return from Injured Reserve and will return to practice on Wednesday. The Steelers will now have 21 days to activate McFarland from Injured Reserve. The 22-year-old should compete for the primary backup role behind rookie Najee Harris when he's ready. To this point, Benny Snell Jr. and Kalen Ballage have been backup up Harris in Pittsburgh's backfield. A fourth-rounder in 2020, McFarland had 33 carries for 113 yards and also caught six of his nine targets for 54 yards in 11 games (no starts) in his rookie season behind a bad offensive line.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. turned in a solid outing in his team's second preseason game, rushing for 34 yards and a touchdown in a 24-16 win over the Philadelphia Eagles. McFarland was quiet in his rookie year, rushing just 33 times for 113 yards and adding six catches for 54 yards after the Steelers used a fourth-round pick on him in the 2020 draft. The former Maryland Terrapin is reportedly having an excellent camp and is better prepared for the NFL after COVID-19 cancelled the 2020 preseason. While McFarland won't get much work behind Najee Harris, he's worth a taxi-squad stash in deep dynasty leagues in case anything happens to Harris this year.
Anthony McFarland Jr. Involved In Offense Early In Camp
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. was barely used as a rookie last season. McFarland finished his rookie campaign with 33 carries for 113 yards while adding six catches for 54 yards. The fourth-round pick out of Maryland has a shot to grab a larger share of the Pittsburgh offense in 2021. While he isn't going to challenge first-round pick Najee Harris for the lead-back role, McFarland has been seeing the field early in camp in two-running back sets, according to The Athletic's Mark Kaboly. Kaboly noted that McFarland has been lining up as the "wild card" in the offense and, at times, has been running to open space as an H-back. McFarland isn't likely to make an impact in fantasy unless an injury befalls Harris, but dynasty gamers rostering McFarland should keep him stashed nonetheless as it appears the Steelers will utilize his talents more this season.
Anthony McFarland Jr. Rolls Up 49 All-Purpose Yards In Week 3
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. saw his first game action in a 28-21 win over the Houston Texans in Week 3. McFarland carried the ball six times for 42 yards and added a seven-yard reception in the win. The rookie looked explosive, ripping off a 20-yard run in the game and could be in line to steal some touches from Benny Snell Jr. going forward. Head coach Mike Tomlin commented after the game that McFarland brings a "different skill set" to the offense. He isn't worth starting in fantasy yet as he is behind starter James Conner but keep him on your radars as a waiver add if he continues to grow his role going forward. Pittsburgh will face the Tennessee Titans in Week 4.
Pittsburgh Steelers running back Anthony McFarland Jr. will be inactive for his team's Week 1 contest against the New York Giants. Without McFarland available, the Steelers will rely on the same three running backs they did last year with James Conner, Benny Snell, and Jaylen Samuels. Conner should be considered the lead back here by a good bit and is a strong fantasy option in Week 1. In terms of Snell vs. Samuels, Snell appears above Samuels on the team's depth chart and should serve as the primary backup, giving him flex appeal in deep leagues. Samuels was fourth on the team's initial depth chart and is likely no more than an emergency option for the team.
The Pittsburgh Steelers took Maryland running back Anthony McFarland Jr. with the No. 124 overall pick in the fourth round. McFarland shows instant acceleration and natural elusiveness out of the backfield at 5-foot-8, 208 pounds. He can pick up big chunk gains out in space because he's quick and elusive, and he'll bring an added element to Pittsburgh's running back room alongside James Conner and Jaylen Samuels. With Conner's recent injury history, McFarland could see more playing time than expected in his rookie season in 2020.
