Patriots Cut Austin Seferian-Jenkins

The New England Patriots released tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins, according to a source. Seferian-Jenkins is stepping away for a month for personal issues and the club will release him when he does that. ASF is still only 26 years old but has had numerous off-field issues in his career that have held him back. Even with the Patriots he wouldn't have been a very attractive fantasy option after catching only 11 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games with Jacksonville in 2018 due to injuries. Benjamin Watson will be suspended for the first four weeks, so Matt LaCosse, Stephen Anderson and rookie Andrew Beck will be next up as they try to replace future Hall of Famer Rob Gronkowski.

Patriots Sign Austin Seferian-Jenkins

The New England Patriots signed free-agent tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins to an undisclosed one-year deal on Wednesday, according to a source. ASF has had off-field issues throughout his career and has also been set back by injuries, but the Pats decided to take a flier on him after Rob Gronkowski hung up his cleats in the offseason. Seferian-Jenkins had just 11 catches for 90 yards and a touchdown in five games due to injury in his lone season with Jacksonville. He'll have a chance to carve out a role in New England as their top pass catcher, but he'll need to stay on track and stay healthy. He'll be fighting for playing time with Jacob Hollister, Stephen Anderson and Matt LaCosse.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins Becomes Free Agent

The Jacksonville Jaguars declined the 2019 option for tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins on Tuesday, making him a free agent. He started the first five games of the season and caught 11 passes for 90 yards and a touchdown before missing the final 11 games with a core muscle injury. His best year came in 2017 with the Jets when he had 50 catches for 357 yards and three touchdowns. Between injuries and off-field issues, teams are unlikely to be knocking the door down to sign ASF this offseason.

Jags To Decline Austin Seferian-Jenkins' Option

The Jacksonville Jaguars are expected to decline the 2019 option on tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins. There were high hopes for ASF in Jacksonville after he finally stayed out of trouble off the field in 2017 with the Jets, but a core injury limited him to just five games in 2018. He's still only 26 years old, but his history of injuries -- he's never played more than 13 games in five years -- and off-field issues might make it hard for him to earn an everyday role in 2019.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins Going On IR

Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (abdomen) will go on Injured Reserve but will be eligible to return this year. Seferian-Jenkins aggravated his core muscle injury in Week 5 against the Chiefs and missed his only target. He has just 11 catches on 19 targets for 90 yards and a score in five games this year. ASF can be dropped in most leagues. With him out, Niles Paul, who caught seven of nine targets for 65 yards on Sunday, is a waiver wire target. With tight end so thin this year, Paul could immediately become a low-end TE1 in Week 6 against the Cowboys.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins Has Some Upside In Week 5

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins has struggled this season, not posting more than 25 yards in any game, but if there's a time for him to break out and find fantasy value it'll be in Week 5 against the Kansas City Chiefs, who allow the third-most points per game to opposing tight ends. Still, Seferian-Jenkins usage makes it hard to trust him as anything more than an emergency option for fantasy owners. He could find the end zone, but this week also represents one of his last chances to show he can be a factor in Jacksonville's offense. Start him in 12-team leagues if you don't have a more consistent option.

T.J. Yeldon, Austin Seferian-Jenkins Will Play

Jacksonville Jaguars running back T.J. Yeldon (ankle) and tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (abdomen) both practiced in full on Friday and are off the final injury report for Week 5 against the Chiefs. With Leonard Fournette (hamstring) out, Yeldon will be the main option in the backfield and is in the RB2 mix this weekend with the Chiefs allowing the most fantasy points per week (37.9) to the position. While ASF hasn't done anything yet for fantasy owners as a TE2, he, too, could make some noise for the first time this year against a sloppy Chiefs defense.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins Expected To Miss Practice

Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (abdomen) is not expected to practice on Wednesday. Seferian-Jenkins has been battling this injury all year but has yet to miss a game. He hasn't gone over three catches or 25 yards yet, though, and remains an uninspiring touchdown-dependent TE2 for fantasy purposes.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins Remains Risky Play In Week 4

For the third consecutive game, Jacksonville Jaguars tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins finished Week 3 with five targets and three receptions. After finishing with a season-low 18 yards, things look just as grim heading into Week 4's meeting with the New York Jets, who've allowed the second-fewest fantasy points to the tight end position this season. Expect another rough week for Seferian-Jenkins in which his fantasy value is entirely tied-up in his ability to find the end zone.

Leonard Fournette, Austin Seferian-Jenkins Expected To Practice

Jacksonville Jaguars running back Leonard Fournette (hamstring), tight end Austin Seferian-Jenkins (abdomen) and defensive end Calais Campbell (ankle) are all expected to practice on Wednesday. Fournette has missed the last two games but is trending in the right direction and should be able to suit up in Week 4 against the Jets this weekend. If he does, he'll be back on the RB1 map. ASF has been battling through his core injury the first three weeks but has played in each game. He's a touchdown-dependent TE2 for a run-first team.
