The Denver Broncos signed free-agent cornerback Blessuan Austin to an undisclosed deal on Wednesday after his three-day minicamp tryout, according to a source. Austin started 17 games over the last three seasons with the New York Jets and Seattle Seahawks. The 25-year-old defensive back played in 11 games (one start) for the Seahawks last year and totaled just 10 tackles (eight solo). He'll just be providing depth for the Broncos secondary next season. Austin has 98 tackles (77 solo), three tackles for loss, eight passes defensed and two forced fumbles in 29 games (17 starts) in his three NFL seasons. He was originally a sixth-round pick by the Jets in 2019 out of Rutgers.
Cornerback Blessuan Austin was a surprise cut of the New York Jets earlier this week, but it didn't take long for him to find a new organization -- Seattle. Austin started 10 games last season for the Jets, with 16 of his 18 career appearances having come as a starter. The Queens, N.Y., native now heads West to join a similar defensive scheme under Ken Norton Jr. Seattle dealt cornerback Ahkello Witherspoon to the Steelers just prior to finalizing its 53-man roster, with Austin now set to help offset any depth concerns for what the Seahawks are hoping is an improved secondary in 2021.
New York Jets defensive back Blessuan Austin was cut by the organization earlier this week. It was a bit of a shocking move to see Austin let go by the Jets. He started 11 games for New York last season. Austin recorded 63 tackles, four passes defended, and one fumble forced. Clearly, the 25-year-old didn't fit in new head coach Robert Saleh's scheme. Austin will likely catch on elsewhere, but this is certainly another blow to an already bad Jets defense. Fantasy managers shouldn't even consider using this defense even as a streaming option.
Jets Defense Loses Bless Austin To Injured Reserve
New York Jets cornerback Bless Austin (neck) was placed on injured reserve Saturday, meaning he will miss at least the team's next three games. Austin had been questionable to play Sunday versus the Chargers, but the team ultimately decided to shut him down. Austin combined for 43 tackles, three passes defended, and one forced fumble across his first eight games of the year. The Jets Defense, particularly in the secondary, will be in shambles for Sunday's game, making the unit a must-avoid in all season-long and DFS scenarios. Facing Justin Herbert, who has amassed passing yards in droves since becoming L.A.'s starting QB, the Jets have just five healthy cornerbacks in Bryce Hall, Arthur Maulet, Lamar Jackson, Javelin Guidry, and Corey Ballentine for the contest.
