The Detroit Lions released wide receiver Bruce Ellington, safety Glover Quinn and linebacker Nicholas Grigsby on Friday. Ellington signed with the Lions after they traded Golden Tate to the Eagles and became their slot receiver until he landed on Injured Reserve on Dec. 22. He had 23 catches for 132 yards in four games for Detroit. Ellington's best year came in 2017 with the Texans when he had 29 catches for 330 yards and two touchdowns. Wherever he signs, he'll battle for a roster spot in training camp.
Detroit Lions wide receivers Kenny Golladay (chest) and Bruce Ellington (hamstring) were both limited in practice on Wednesday. Quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) also continues to be limited in practice. Golladay had one of his best games last week with seven catches for 146 yards in a loss. He'll face a stiffer test against Minnesota in Week 16 but remains one of the only players worth using in fantasy as a WR2. Ellington did not play last week and wasn't taking advantage of his targets before his injury, making him hard to trust in fantasy leagues. With Stafford having very few precious playmakers on offense, he's become a low-end QB2 to close out the year.
Kerryon Johnson, Bruce Ellington Out Against The Bills
Detroit Lions running back Kerryon Johnson (knee) is listed as "Out" for Sunday's game against the Bills, marking his fourth straight game missed. This will elevate LeGarrette Blount, Theo Riddick, and possibly Zach Zenner's status this week. Wide receiver Bruce Ellington (hamstring) is also going to miss the Week 15 road matchup with Buffalo. Ellington was injured in last week's win over the Cardinals and hasn't practiced all week, so it's not surprising he'll miss on Sunday. In his place, expect TJ Jones, Andy Jones, and even Brandon Powell to see more snaps.
Kerryon Johnson, Bruce Ellington Sidelined Thursday
Detroit Lions rookie running back Kerryon Johnson (knee) and wide receiver Bruce Ellington (hamstring) both remained sidelined at practice on Thursday for the second straight day. Johnson looks likely to miss his fourth straight game, and Ellington looks unlikely for Week 15 against the Bills as well. LeGarrette Blount and Zach Zenner could split the rushing duties, making them both unattractive flex plays. If Ellington is inactive on Sunday, TJ Jones, Brandon Powell and Andy Jones will fight for snaps behind Kenny Golladay.
Detroit Lions rookie running back Kerryon Johnson (knee) and wide receiver Bruce Ellington (hamstring) both missed practice on Wednesday. Both players seem destined to miss Week 15 against the Bills. Johnson has now missed the last three games and could sit out the rest of the year with nothing left to play for. LeGarrette Blountand Zach Zenner could split the work on early downs if Johnson misses another game, making them both shaky RB3/flex considerations in deeper leagues. Ellington hasn't done anything with his increased targets in recent weeks and isn't much of a fantasy option even if he plays. It's really hard to trust anyone in this depleted offense the rest of the way.
Bruce Ellington Catches Four Passes, Leaves Game With Injury
Detroit Lions wide receiver Bruce Ellington caught all four of his targets for just 17 yards in Sunday's win over the Cardinals. Ellington was forced to leave the game in the third quarter with a hamstring injury and did not return. The 27-year-old has now caught at least four passes in every game since joining the Lions, but now he joins the host of Lions on the team's injury report. His Week 15 status for the game against the Bills will likely be up in the air, depending on the severity of the injury.
Detroit Lions wide receiver Bruce Ellington (hamstring) left the game early in the second half in Week 14 against the Cardinals and is questionable to return. Ellington caught all four of his targets for just 17 yards before his injury. Ellington has seen a heavy dosage of targets ever since Marvin Jones landed on Injured Reserve, but he hasn't been able to capitalize with much yardage or any touchdowns for owners in DFS or deeper leagues. He was questionable coming into this game with a back injury. With rookie Brandon Powell inactive, Andy Jones could soak up more targets as the third wideout. Detroit's offense has precious few playmakers left at this point.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back), wide receiver Bruce Ellington (back) and tight end Michael Roberts (shoulder) are active in Week 14 against the Cardinals. Stafford is running out of playmakers on offense due to injuries and trades, so even in a good matchup he'll be a mediocre QB2 play this weekend. Ellington has an opportunity to be a bigger part of the offense with Marvin Jones out for the year. Ellington has seen a big increase in targets in recent weeks but hasn't done much with them, making him a low-end WR4/flex in PPR leagues. Roberts is a red zone weapon for Stafford but is a touchdown-dependent TE2. Receiver Brandon Powell (calf) is inactive, which is good news for TJ Jones in three-receiver sets.
Detroit Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford (back), wide receivers Bruce Ellington (back) and Brandon Powell (calf) and tight end Michael Roberts (shoulder) were all limited in practice on Friday and are questionable for Week 14 against the Cardinals. Everyone in this group should be able to suit up, barring some sort of setback. Stafford's ceiling is at rock bottom after losing his best weapons on offense. Even in a good matchup, he's a low-end QB2. Ellington has 17 targets in the last two games but has 13 catches and just 63 yards to show for it. He's merely a DFS sleeper with target upside. Powell will be the team's No. 4 wideout, at best. Roberts should be able to return and could see red-zone looks but is a touchdown-dependent TE2. Cornerback Darius Slay (ankle) is also questionable. If he sits out, it'd be good news for Cardinals top receiver Larry Fitzgerald.
Bruce Ellington Could Be Reliable Against Cardinals
Detroit Lions wide receiver Bruce Ellington has been a steady source of receptions since joining the Lions, but thats all about all he has to his name. He even had a career high 10 targets in Week 13, but in his three games combined as a Lion he has accumulated just 115 yards on 19 receptions. The Lions offense has been in trouble the past few weeks with injuries and its not any better this week. However, if the key playmakers are healthy, the Lions should have a good shot to put up some numbers, including Ellington. Look at him as a flex in PPR formats only, but its hard to expect more as he hasnt scored yet as a member of the Lions.
