The Carolina Panthers re-signed running back Cameron Artis-Payne to an undisclosed one-year deal on Thursday. The team's fifth-round pick in 2015 has averaged 4.2 yards per carry in his first four NFL seasons, but he's too far down on the depth chart to have any real fantasy value in 2019. CAP has 118 career carries for 491 yards and five rushing touchdowns. He had 19 carries for 69 rushing yards and one touchdown last season. He can be ignored by fantasy owners unless Christian McCaffrey suffers an injury.
After the Carolina Panthers did not address the position in the NFL draft, running back Cameron Artis-Payne will get a real shot for a bigger role alongside Christian McCaffrey in 2018. As of now, Fozzy Whittaker is the only other running back on the roster. The Panthers are likely to address the position with a veteran on the open market, but CAP should see a much bigger role after carrying the ball just 18 times for 95 yards and a score in 2017. If Artis-Payne is the main back alongside McCaffrey this season, he could have RB3/flex value in deeper leagues.
Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera said running back Cameron Artis-Payne "will most certainly get that opportunity" to replace Jonathan Stewart as the power back for the team. Artis-Payne might be intriguing as a touchdown-dependent fantasy option in 2018, but the Panthers are also a good bet to address the running back position early in the draft. Take a wait-and-see approach on CAP this year. The 27-year-old had a career-low 18 carries for 95 yards (5.3 yards per carry) and one touchdown in 2017.
Cameron Artis-Payne Joins In The Fun With 12-Yard Touchdown Run
Carolina Panthers running back Cameron Artis-Payne carried the ball seven times for 68 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown run in the Panthers win over the Dolphins. Artis-Payne ran for 70 yards earlier in the season but has played sparingly since. It seemed like anyone on the Panthers offense found success against the Dolphins defense in the 45-21 rout. The Panthers already have running backs Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey so playing time will continue to be lean for Artis-Payne moving forward.
Carolina Panthers running back Cameron Artis-Payne carried the ball five times for 70 yards against the Titans on Saturday. Artis-Payne had a 43-yard run and added a touchdown as well, showing why he should still get carries in a crowded backfield. Jonathan Stewart and Christian McCaffrey are the top two options for the Panthers, and have a positional battle in their own right, but remember that Artis-Payne did rush for 85 yards on 18 carries in Week 5 last season, scoring twice.
Cameron Artis-Payne Rushes 18 Times for 85 Yards and Two Touchdowns; Panthers' RBC is Still Murky At Best
With Jonathan Stewart still out, the waters of the Panthers' running back committee are murky at best, with usage among each of the backs varying by game. Monday night saw Cameron Artis-Payne's number called, and he did not disappoint. Artis-Payne ran decisively versus the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' defense, rushing 18 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns. If you have Artis-Payne and you didn't start him in Week 5, you might have missed your window, as Stewart is expected to return next week versus the Saints. Stewart's return will mean another Panthers' running back will have to be relegated back to the murky depths of fantasy irrelevance. Smart money is on Fozzy Whittaker settling into his previous pass catching back-up role to Stewart, but Artis-Payne owners should wait until Stewart comes back before clearing their bench. Artis-Payne's Week 5 performance will likely be rewarded with more opportunities in Week 6, especially with Mike Tolbert and Stewart both recovering from hamstring injuries.
Cameron Artis-Payne Gets the Start; Does Well; Low Floor/High Ceiling Bye Week Cover in Deep Leagues
Cameron Artis-Payne led the Panthers in rushing Sunday, carrying 12 times for 47 yards against an unsurprisingly stout Viking's defense. Artis-Payne looked good in the absence of Jonathan Stewart, and definitely had the lion's share of the carries for his running back committee. Fozzy Whittaker had five carries but was targeted six times in the passing game. and seems to be back that will see the bulk of the passes. Until Stewart comes back from injury, Artis-Payne is the starter and looks to receive a solid amount of carries as a result. Since Artis-Payne isn't owned in a majority of leagues, consider him a low floor/high ceiling sleeper in most leagues, especially for those looking to cover the first bye week.
Cameron Artis-Payne Expected To Start For Panthers In Week 3
Carolina Panthers running back Cameron Artis-Payne is expected to draw the start in the team's Week 3 matchup against the Minnesota Vikings with Jonathan Stewart nursing an injury. "All he's ever needed was the opportunity," head coach Ron Rivera said. "We didn't have Stew at the end of the season, so he got his opportunity and performed really well and did some really good things. And then this preseason, I thought he had a really good preseason." When Stewart left last week's game, it was Fozzy Whittaker who took over as the lead back. Whittaker should still be heavily involved, but it sounds like the coaching staff wants to see what they have in Artis-Payne. He will be on the fringe RB2 radar this week, with the expectation that he should see close to 15 touches.
