Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson will only see a modest expansion of his role if Rob Kelley can't play Sunday against the Raiders. While head coach Jay Gruden acknowledged that he could earn a bit more work, he also cautioned: "But he's so important to us on third down we just have to be careful. He's not the biggest guy in the world. We don't want him to get 20-25 carries a game and get a lot of pounding on that body. He's definitely needed in pass protection and the routes and all that stuff on third down and red zone. So we'll try to expand his role a little bit, but we don't want to go too crazy with him." Rob Kelley's rib injury is not considered serious, but his status for Week 3 is in doubt. If he had to miss, it would likely be Samaje Perine that took the bulk of the early-down work with Mack Brown filling in for the occasional series. Chris Thompson has been fantastic for fantasy purposes over the season's first two weeks, but it's worth noting that he did all of his damage against the Rams on just six touches. He's a shaky flex option in standard formats, but his game-breaking ability keeps him in play as an RB2 in PPR.
Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson made the most of his six touches Sunday, carrying the ball three times for 77 yards and a pair of touchdowns, adding three receptions for 29 yards through the air. It's hard to imagine this kind of production being sustainable in standard formats, but he has more than proved his worth in PPR leagues. Apparently energized by his new contract extension, Chris Thompson is at least in the RB2 conversation in PPR formats. With Rob Kelley nursing a rib injury, Thompson could see his role expand in Week 3 against the Raiders. If he's still available, he's probably worth an add in all leagues if Rob Kelley is ruled out next week.
Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson was arguably the lone bright spot on offense during the Redskins embarrassing loss to the Eagles in the season-opener, catching 4 of 5 targets for 52 yards including a highlight reel touchdown grab where he juked 5 Eagles defenders out of their socks. A solid PPR flex play a year ago, Thompson is a candidate to once again lead the Redskins backfield in snaps after starter Rob Kelley failed to get anything going on the ground last week. Probably too risky in standard formats, Thompson makes for an intriguing option in PPR leagues against the Rams in Week 2 as the game script could be in his favor for a second straight week.
Washington Redskins running back Chris Thompson signed a two-year contract extension on Tuesday, keeping him with the team through 2019. Thompson is the best pass catcher in the Redskins backfield by a wide margin, and his presence caps the upside of Rob Kelley and Samaje Perine, as neither figure to see much work on third down. Logging 68 carries and 49 catches for 709 all-purpose yards and five TDs in 2016, Thompson is a solid bye-week flex option in PPR leagues, but not much else. He provides the Redskins with more real life value than he does for fantasy owners.
