The San Francisco 49ers cut running backs Kerryon Johnson and Chris Thompson and linebacker Curtis Bolton on Tuesday to make room on the practice squad for tight end Jordan Matthews and two other potential additions. Johnson was waived by the Detroit Lions in the offseason and joined the 49ers last month, but he never saw a single touch in the lone game he was active in Week 3 against the Green Bay Packers. It's not a good sign that Johnson didn't factor into a 49ers backfield that was missing Raheem Mostert, Jeff Wilson Jr., JaMycal Hasty and Elijah Mitchell. The 24-year-old might latch onto another practice squad, but he's obviously well off the fantasy radar in 2021.
The San Francisco 49ers signed running back Chris Thompson and defensive lineman Eddie Yarbrough to their practice squad on Wednesday. The team released tight end Jordan Matthews from the practice squad in a corresponding move. Other than the Baltimore Ravens, the Niners have the most beat up backfield in the league with Raheem Mostert out for the rest of the season, Jeff Wilson Jr. sidelined and JaMycal Hasty dealing with a high ankle sprain. Rookies Elijah Mitchell (shoulder) and Trey Sermon (concussion) also suffered injuries in Week 2, leaving Trenton Cannon and the recently signed Jacques Patrick as the only healthy RBs on the active roster. Thompson, 30, can contribute in the passing game on third downs, but he hasn't played more than 11 games a season since 2016. There's opportunity in this backfield, but Thompson is only a deep-league PPR flier for running back depth for now.
Bears Bring In Chris Thompson, Brian Hill For Workouts
The Chicago Bears worked out veteran running backs Chris Thompson, Wendell Smallwood and Brian Hill on Tuesday. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune reports that this just looks as if the Bears are updating their free agent list. Starting running back David Montgomery has been off to a nice start this season and veteran Damien Williams has cemented himself as the clear No. 2 back with Tarik Cohen (knee) on the PUP list. Thompson suited up for the Jaguars this past season, but only played eight games and landed on Injured Reserve with a back injury. Hill spent his training camp with the Tennessee Titans, but was released with an injury settlement and spent last season with the Falcons as the backup to Todd Gurley. Smallwood has spent the bulk of his five-year career with the Philadelphia Eagles and played in one game this past season for the Pittsburgh Steelers. Even if any of the veterans are signed by the Bears, all can be avoided in all formats.
Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Doug Marrone said that running back Chris Thompson (back) will be put on Injured Reserve. It means that Thompson will have to miss at least the next three games after suffering a back injury in the Week 10 loss to the Packers. Rookie James Robinson remains the featured back in this offense, but there will now be opportunity for either Devine Ozigbo or Dare Ogunbowale to handle third-down pass-catching duties with Thompson sidelined. Through eight games this year, Thompson only had seven carries for 20 yards and 20 receptions for 146 yards and one touchdown. He was merely an RB3/4 in deep PPR leagues. Take a wait-and-see approach in those same leagues with Ozigbo and Ogunbowale for the time being.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Thompson exited Sunday's game against the Packers to be evaluated for a concussion. He was cleared to return, but is apparently still questionable to come back due to a back injury. Injuries have been the story of Thompson's career. If he doesn't return, expect to see more of James Robinson, who has already been seeing almost-full workloads each week.
The Jacksonville Jaguars activated running back Chris Thompson from the Reserve/COVID-19 list on Friday. Thompson will be ready to return in Week 9 against the Texans following the team's bye this week. The 30-year-old has been an afterthought in Jacksonville's backfield behind James Robinson, rushing the ball just six times for 17 yards. However, he's contributed 16 receptions on 19 targets for 111 yards and a touchdown in six games, so he's useful as bench depth for fantasy managers in deeper PPR formats. If Robinson were to go down with an injury and miss time, Thompson would have RB2 upside in point-per-reception leagues.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Thompson was placed on the COVID-19 list prior to the team's Week 7 game against the Los Angeles Chargers. In a corresponding move, Devine Ozigbo (hamstring) was activated from Injured Reserve prior to Sunday's game and will serve as the team's No. 2 back behind James Robinson in Week 7. Thompson has failed to make much of an impact so far this year and can be dropped in all fantasy leagues.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Thompson has caught 16 of his 19 targets for 111 yards and a touchdown on the year. He's been regularly seeing about five targets per game this year, but he isn't doing a ton with them, averaging 6.9 yards per reception. He's also barely getting any work in the running game with just six carries for 17 yards on the year. James Robinson is getting all the work he can handle right now as the team's No. 1 back and until something changes, Thompson isn't worth considering as a starting option in any fantasy leagues.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Thompson continued to see his role expand on Thursday night, catching five passes for 35 yards and adding three rushing yards on two carries. Thompson isn't the same receiving threat that he was in Washington, but he's becoming a larger part of things for the Jaguars. That doesn't mean you need to rush out and put him in your fantasy lineups moving forward, but it's worth keeping an eye on what Thompson does in Week 4 against the Bengals.
Jacksonville Jaguars running back Chris Thompson scored his first touchdown of the 2020 season on Sunday, finishing with three catches for 20 yards and a score. He also added two rushes for seven yards. Of course, Thompson only getting five touches in this loss to the Titans is worrisome, especially with a game script that should have led to Thompson getting solid work as the passing down back. He has upside, but his role is too inconsistent right now to make him a worthy fantasy option on a weekly basis.
