Damien Williams Opting Out Of 2020 Season

Kansas City Chiefs running back Damien Williams intends to opt out of the 2020 NFL season due to COVID-19 concerns. Williams -- who had 711 scrimmage yards and seven touchdowns last season -- was set to be part of a two-back committee with rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire. Now, this backfield is likely to belong solely to Edwards-Helaire, who should vault up draft boards in redraft and has the potential to be productive on the ground and through the air in head coach Andy Reid's offense. Edwards-Helaire is a first round pick now. Williams should be off the draft board in redraft. And DeAndre Washington is now an appealing late round option who could become a valuable handcuff to the rookie lead back.

Damien Williams, Clyde Edwards-Helaire To Form One-Two Punch

Kansas City Chiefs general manager Brett Veach said that running back Damien Williams will remain the starter heading into the 2020 season, but first-rounder Clyde Edwards-Helaire will definitely be in the mix in his rookie season. "I mean, both these guys can run and catch and certainly Damien will come in as the starting running back and Clyde will have to come in here and compete for playing time, which we think hell do. But I think it will be a one-two punch," Leach said. But Veach also called Edwards-Helaire "a franchise running back" and "a true playmaker," so we'll see how long Williams can hold him off. CEH will be popular in dynasty leagues, but he should also see immediate fantasy value in redraft leagues in 2020, mostly in PPR setups. If you can pair Williams and Edwards-Helaire in single-year drafts, you'll be sitting pretty.

Chiefs To Pick Up Damien Williams' Option

The Kansas City Chiefs plan to pick up the option for running back Damien Williams, who will make $2.3 million in 2020, according to a source. Williams played in just 11 games in the regular season due to injury, but he averaged 4.5 yards per carry on 111 attempts for 498 yards and five touchdowns. The soon-to-be 28-year-old ran for 104 yards in the Super Bowl win over the 49ers and had four rushing touchdowns and two receiving touchdowns in the postseason. When he's healthy, Williams is the unquestioned leader of KC's backfield, which yields plenty of fantasy appeal with Patrick Mahomes under center of this explosive offense.
