Steelers Re-Sign Ray-Ray McCloud III, Restructure Derek Watt
The Pittsburgh Steelers agreed to an undisclosed one-year deal with restricted free-agent wide receiver/return man Ray-Ray McCloud III on Wednesday, according to an informed source. The team also created $880,000 in salary cap space by restructuring fullback Derek Watt's contract. McCloud played in every game last season with the Steelers, but he started just two of them. Placing an original-round tender on him would've cost $2.13 million for the 2021 season, so it's likely that Pittsburgh is bringing him back at a cheaper rate. The 24-year-old caught just 20 passes on 22 targets for 77 yards and no touchdowns in his first season with the team last year. In three years in the NFL, McCloud has 25 receptions for 113 yards and no scores in 32 games (three starts). He can be ignored in fantasy.
Los Angeles Chargers fullback Derek Watt is easily the least-known member of the trio of NFL brothers, but he got on the board on Sunday when he hauled in a one-yard touchdown against Jacksonville. Watt is one of a number of bruising fullbacks that have appeared in the league in the last couple years as the position has undergone a resurgence, but this was his first time being the man to haul the rock over the goal line. Watt them followed it up with a solid end zone celebration of a dog being let off its leash, and it's a sure thing that he had many a celebratory phone call with the family after the game.
Los Angeles Chargers fullback Derek Watt may get some more opportunities in 2018. With the team losing star tight end Hunter Henry to a knee injury, they're looking for more of an inside presence in the passing game and Watt has shown exceptional hands during training camp. Tight end Virgil Green is also stepping up, but Watt could find his way into a sleeper role out of the backfield. He's still a flyer for most owners, but those in deep leagues should certainly consider a guy head coach Anthony Lynn is raving about as a pass-catcher.
