Los Angeles Chargers running back Detrez Newsome may be losing his spot in the pecking order. Coming into Sunday's game against the Saints, Newsome was slated to be the team's No. 3 running back after Austin Ekeler and Justin Jackson, but he got jumped by Troymaine Pope when it came time to actually go into the game. To make matters worse, Newsome did nothing of importance while Pope took a punt to the house for the biggest play of the game. At this point, Newsome may be at real risk to be cut from the team. He'll need to step it up in practice this week to see much of a future in LA.
Fourth-string Los Angeles Chargers running back Detrez Newsome got the call that he was going to be playing in the teams biggest game of the season on Thursday night, and he ran with it. As the coaches used the standard two-headed approach that theyve used all season with the regular starters, Newsome got the ball six times and chugged along for 34 yards, including a couple huge runs as the team made their miraculous fourth-quarter comeback. He also caught a pair of passes for another 19 yards. Its unlikely that Newsome will see the field again anytime soon, but he certainly did his part in LAs huge win.
Los Angeles Chargers running back Detrez Newsome was signed to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday in order to give the team insurance in case Melvin Gordon (hamstring) is unable to play in Week 7 in London against the Titans. This move isn't a good sign for Gordon's status, but fantasy owners will know very early on Sunday whether Gordon is active. If he's not, Austin Ekeler would be a strong RB2 as the main option in the backfield. Justin Jackson would spell Ekeler. Make alternate plans right now if you own Gordon.
Los Angeles Chargers running back Detrez Newsome ran 12 times for 34 yards and a touchdown in the team's preseason loss over the weekend against the New Orleans Saints. He was the team's only bright spot in an otherwise dreary offensive performance, and it is starting to look like Newsome is the clear-cut No. 3 tailback behind Melvin Gordon and second-year man Austin Ekeler. The latter pounded out 50 yards on five carries while snagging three balls for 13 yards on his three targets. Gordon is an obvious RB1, and that's not a question. Ekeler should be treated as a low-end RB4 in standard formats, with a little extra value in PPR. Newsome is more of a RB6 in fantasy leagues with plenty of roster flexibility.
Los Angeles Chargers running back Detrez Newsome knew he'd be the man coming into the game against Seattle, and he took advantage of the opportunity. Newsome was one of just two running backs who were active for the game, and the other was starter Melvin Gordon, so he was pretty much guaranteed the bulk of the carries. He finished with 19 carries for 78 yards, averaging 4.1 YPC. Newsome is playing for the third-string spot, and unless someone absolutely destroys at camp this week, it looks like it's probably his gig. With the running back position so volatile and prone to injury, Newsome could see some real deal playing time if the injury bug shows up in LA's backfield.
Los Angeles Chargers rookie running back Detrez Newsome got off to a hot start last week by scoring a nice touchdown in his first NFL preseason game. This week versus the Seahawks, expect Newsome to get plenty of looks once again. Newsome is competing to be the third-string running back for the Chargers behind Melvin Gordon and Austin Ekeler, but both of those guys have had injury troubles in the past, so a third-stringer could see some playing time when the real games start. Newsome is competing with 7th-round pick Justin Jackson, who has been hampered by an injury of his own, so the undrafted free agent will be looking to make the most of every touch.
